16inch MBP or 13inch with eGPU?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 11:47 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a new computer, my current one has probably about a month or so left on it and I want to make a decision before it gets too bad. I'm a bioengineering student so I code a lot and do a lot of 3D modeling and I also have a YouTube channel where I do a lot of editing. Nothing crazy, just 1080p stuff usually about 10 minutes, but I might upgrade to 4K eventually and I'll need something that can keep up with my workflow decently well since they sometimes tend to get around 20-30 minutes and I'm trying to upload weekly.

I understand that the 16" is probably the better computer, as it's more powerful with the bigger screen and the better speakers and battery and dedicated GPU and all that, but the formfactor is just a little bit too big for me to be comfortable and I think the 13" size would really suit me better. I don't necessarily need portability, since I'm almost done with school and everything's online now anyway, but I went to test the 16" out in-store before all the COVID stuff happened and it was just such a behemoth.

I've looked into eGPUs and they seem like a decent option, I'd probably get the Razer Core X since that seems like the most reliable and I'd start with a decently priced lower end GPU and then over time upgrade to something more powerful if I ever need it. I like the option to upgrade later on, since I want a computer that can last me a solid 7-8 years especially at this price point.

Would you recommend me going with a $1800 13" with an eGPU or should I just get used to the size and go with the 16"? How worth it are the GPU upgrades on the 16" and roughly what's the longevity for each of them? That's a bunch of questions sorry, any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    Trade In MacBook Pro

    Posted: 12 May 2020 12:07 AM PDT

Does Apple check if water indicators or activated? My MacBook shows no damage in diagnostics but last time I brought my MacBook in for a top case replacement they denied it because there was water damage. Am I able to trade into Apple still?

    MBA 2018 or MBA 2020

    Posted: 11 May 2020 08:10 PM PDT

Hi. I will soon buy my first Macbook.

There is the MBA 2018 for a little less than 800 euros on the Apple Refurb Store. I don't know if it is still good and up to date or if the price difference between it and the 1200 euros MBA 2020 is worth it.

Do you have some advices on what I should get ? I will use the Macbook for software dev. (As a student)

    Thanks

Cursor won't respond when running finger across the bottom edge of the trackpad

    Posted: 11 May 2020 10:08 PM PDT

I have a 16" MBP. Just curious if this is something "normal" or if my trackpad is glitchy. My trackpad is not responsive in its bottom edge (say, your finger is touching the trackpad right at the edge with the aluminium body). If I place my finger there, and I slide left / right the pointer won't move. It does move in all other edges of the trackpad. In fact, it even moves if only half of my finger is touching the pad (and the other half is on the aluminium body). However it's not so on the bottom edge

    Macbook and Kanken backpack

    Posted: 11 May 2020 07:25 PM PDT

I'm planning on buying a 16-inch Macbook Pro (the current model) and I have a Kanken Greenland backpack (Dimensions are 15 x 11 x 5 in.) It fits my 14" laptop ok, but would it fit a 16 inch? I may put a case on it so idk how that will affect if it fits.

    Help Choosing Macbook

    Posted: 11 May 2020 03:17 PM PDT

Would love some input on which MacBook I should buy. I'm generally buying for everyday use.

I use chrome and frequently have multiple tabs/windows open at once. I'm not a designer by trade but I do plan on using Sketch semi-regularly. I also plan on trying to learn Xcode/swift.

For what it's worth, I ultimately plan on getting the 14 inch pro (in hopefully 0.5-1.5 years) and give this computer to my significant other. She will only use it for web browsing and Microsoft office.

    Top Two Choices:

MacBook Pro 13: base model upgraded to 16 gb ram MacBook Air: upgrade to i5 and 16 gb of ram

    Other Considerations:

MacBook Pro 13: base model MacBook Pro 13: 10th gen model MacBook Air: base model MacBook Air: upgraded to 16 gb of ram

    Reliable USB-C dongle?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 06:55 PM PDT

Does anyone have any recommendations for a USB-C hub/ dongle that doesn't stop working after a few months? Ideally with an SD card reader, USB-A, HDMI, and maybe even ethernet?

    MacBook Unexpectedly Shuts Down

    Posted: 11 May 2020 06:52 PM PDT

    Could use some help here.

I leave my 16" MacBook asleep over night and every morning when I go to use it, the machine is shut down. I launch it and I get a message that says it "shut down unexpectedly" and asks to send a report to apple. I've sent multiple but this keeps happening.

Not sure if this is related, but when I relaunch the laptop, after I enter my password at login, it gets hung up and won't log me in. I have to force restart and try again. It can take multiple attempts before I get a successful login.

Really disappointed. Was expecting a lot more out of this $2,800 piece of equipment.

For the record, I have FileVault enabled. I am also using an external GPU. Those are the only two factors I can think of that may have an effect on any of this.

MBA 2020 plays LOUD noise after unlocking

    Posted: 11 May 2020 02:12 PM PDT

Hi all, just got a MBA 2020 (my first).

Twice now I've opened my Mac and unlocked it with the fingerprint, and after a second of being "frozen" it goes: BERGDOFGODFG out of the speakers for like 0.5s.

It's so loud I'm honestly worried it could be damaging the speakers. It doesn't seem to happen every time. The only thing I could suspect is a bunch of audio notifications are like..queueing while it's in sleep (I leave discord open)...and then ALL trying to play simultaneously when I open it back up.

Any idea? Should I reach out to apple?

    Thanks!

EDIT: After some more googling I found this link describing a similar problem with discord! The scary thing is the volume is WELL above what it's set to, which really makes me worried about speaker damage. https://github.com/meetfranz/franz/issues/928

Trying to decide- MBA 2020 or MBP 2020 for the basics.

    Posted: 11 May 2020 01:31 PM PDT

I know I see this post repeated but I'm not super tech savvy when it comes to computer specs. I'm looking for a new Mac to lessen the use on my work computer (Dell). I do the basics - use the internet for shopping, social media, most of the Google apps, some Zoom but that will probably used less when schools open again. I have online students so I use a couple different programs. I have a ton of pictures on my iPhone/iCloud but I don't really do anything with them. I would like this computer to last for at least 5 years? I noticed that the wire cutter recommended getting the Air with the quad-core - is that a better option than the base Pro? Or will the base Air last for me?

    16” MBP vs 13” MBP

    Posted: 11 May 2020 04:28 PM PDT

I'm currently deciding between purchasing the new 13" MacBook Pro, or the 16" MacBook Pro. I will be using the laptop for mostly logic and some final cut. The two builds I'm deciding between are pretty much the same, besides the 16" will have 9th gen i7 and the 13" will have 10th gen i5. I know either computer will probably handle what I need to do well, however I'm concerned the 16" is gonna be too big. Redditors who own the 16" MBP, do you find it too big at times? Is it hard to leave the house with? Also would love any opinions on which computer you guys think would suit an aspiring producer who occasionally edits his own videos. Thanks!!

    Which Macbook should I buy?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 04:12 PM PDT

    Hello there,

First of all, sorry for my bad English. I have uncertainty about which Macbook should I buy. I'm a iOS developer and I have a Mac Mini 2014 in the office but it's time to buy my own Macbook. I was thinking in some brand new with Intel 10 gen. But Air or Pro? The price difference it's too much for me. I often do some Android and Java Development. And is it 8 GB enough in 2020? Thanks to everybody.

Should I go for the "new" MacBook Pro 16-inch? Or wait?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 12:18 PM PDT

    Hello all Apple-fans,

I'm planning on purchasing the "new" MacBook Pro 16-inch. The new 13-inch doesn't have the specs I want, so it's not really interesting to go for the smaller one this time.

The MacBook Pro 16-inch really has everything I wish for. Perfect size, good specs and the good keyboard.

But before I go for it, I just wanted to hear with reddit if I should wait until a newer version comes out? Do you think it's worth the wait? And what could I possibly miss out on by not waiting?

Should I reset my 5-year-old MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 11 May 2020 11:55 AM PDT

Is there a benefit to starting fresh?

When I owned Windows laptops I made a habit of formatting and re-installing the OS every year. It was the simplest way to clean away the junk.

I'm going on 5 years with my mid-2105 MacBook Pro. No resets, no issues -- though she feels a bit sluggish at times. That's likely due to the latest version of macOS, new and expanding versions of my favorite apps, etc.

Will I see any performance boost if I back it up and format/reset it?
