MBP 13 (i5 quad core) or Macbook Air (quad core i7) w/Sonnet eGFX?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 12:06 AM PDT

I have a 2018 MBP 15 since I used to edit vids a lot more, but I'm about to move to a bigger city with a lot more on the go usage. Looking for portability and decent performance. I'll still to light editing time to time, but just want something easier to throw in a bag and go. I know the air doesnt have good cooling, but the only time I'd push it would be when editing, which I'm hoping the eGPU would take a lot of the power.

MBP 13”, 16” for general usage and video editing?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 10:14 PM PDT

Looking at upgrading my 2011 MacBook Pro finally! My budget is about $1700, but in a pinch I could stretch to $2000 (it would be quite hard but I can do that).

Most of my usage is web browsing, photo editing, light graphics design, and coding (all multitasking if possible). My current MBP from 2011 of course cannot do this very well. I'd also like to start gaining more experience in video editing whether with final cut, or premiere, or ideally both if possible.

My eventual goals are to go to film school or gain enough proficiency in film production to be employed in that area, so it's important that whatever computer I have isn't my limiting factor in developing my skills. That said I'm also being realistic in that my skills are developing, and maybe I don't need the latest and greatest tech just yet. My mindset is very much one of finding the sweet spot between affordability and capability.

I saw that the everyday dad used the base MBP with the 8th gen i5 with pretty minimal issues editing 10bjt 4K footage. So that to me is promising to just get the base model... and then Max Yurev used the 10th gen 13" to edit PROres raw. However I'm wondering if it would be more beneficial to get slight upgrades to it. Basically the options I'm looking at are:

    1. MBP 2020 8th gen i5 with 16GB RAM upgrade

    2. MBP 2020 10th gen i5 (this is probably the most appealing option as it fits my budget, but at this point I wonder if I should just spring for the 16")

    3. MBP 16" 2020 base (this is a BIG stretch but I can do it if I'm careful with my budgeting, but then leaves less room for external accessories, camera equipment, etc)

Majority of SSD taken up by “other”.

Hi everyone, so I have a 13' 2019 MacBook Pro with a 126 GB SSD. Currently 81 GB are taken up by "other". I have no idea how to reduce the space that "other" takes. Does anyone know how to change it? Thanks!

    1. Does anyone know where to source the best replacement battery for a 2013 13-inch MBP Retina?
    2. Does anyone have experience with the battery and how it has held up?

Is the latest MacBook Air worth the wait?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 07:29 PM PDT

I'm looking into buying the latest MacBook Air. Since it's still not available for purchase in my country and would take a month or 2 before it would be available for purchase. I would be needing it for marketing/ content writing work as well with light photoshop and maybe some video editing once in a while. Should I wait for them to release it or should I just go with my other options?

I have a 2018 Macbook Air with Boot Camp (Windows 10) but everytime I load up Windows, I get this in my screen and there's no way out of it! Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? It cost a good chunk of money to get Windows and a game I bought earlier today and I don't want it wasted.

Help! Trying to install SSD to 2012 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 24 May 2020 11:49 AM PDT

I'm using a Samsung 860 evo, since the reviews on Amazon says it's compatible. However when I try to format it as all online threads say (MAC OS Journaled), when I install the SSD internally, the Mac doesn't recognize the SSD as a hard drive to restore from an external back up.

The problem seems to be related to the Catalina OS, as I've done this same upgrade on a MacBook Pro from 2012, but it either had Mojave or High Sierra.

I've scoured the internet for help and I'm coming up blank. Any thoughts?

    Which MacBook for Music Production

    Posted: 24 May 2020 05:04 PM PDT

Hey guys so I'm in the market for a MacBook (my first one) and just wanted to replace my old windows laptop that I use for school right now. I initially just wanted to get the base MacBook air and I only use my laptop for video calls, web browsing, schoolwork, youtube, and Netflix, etc. but recently I've picked up a new hobby of singing and am going to start getting vocal lessons soon. Something I've always wanted to do was make covers of songs so I've been doing some research on equipment I'll need. From what I've seen most people use MacBook pros but for my case I'll be doing very light production with probably most of the time I'll be using instrumentals already made for covers and maybe just here and there I would create my own instrumentals using garage band. Also I would be using iMovie to just put the video recording and audio together for the covers. Rendering time isn't a hobby and I'd only be making a cover/video maybe like once every month or two months.

Not sure if this matters but I also wanna get into some vlogging when I go on trips or any interesting events.

Would a MacBook Air suffice for my very basic music production and video editing on iMovie and Garage Band or would a better upgrade be the base MacBook Pro 13? Sorry if this was already answered but most threads I find online make it seem like I'm a professional music producer. Thanks!

Edit: just wanted to also add that I have a main PC desktop that I use for gaming with dedicated graphics and much more powerful processor, but I heard that using apple's free software is really easy and nice so was looking into using the MacBook for more of those needs.

Brand New MBP16 Running Hot surfing web. Fans blast while idle.

    i9/5500m/16GB/1TB

I've used my laptop for a few days now. I've only surfed the web, checked email, played music on Spotify, and viewed a few photos (in finder). While on a plastic standing desk, the fans have run loud at least once a day, while running light programs mentioned above. It is a lot warmer than my Macbook Pro 13in. A few notes:

    • The fans blast regardless of whether it's connected to my DELL U2413.
    • Room temps are around 75F
    • Please see the temps in F & C - these were taken with me just surfing the web.
    • Graphics card mode is on auto switch - which currently lists both video cards under "About this Mac" - right now, the Dell is connected.

    Are these temperatures normal?

My mic pics up on all the audio I play on my computer when I am in voice chat. Is there any fix?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 04:36 PM PDT

I've been having this issue for a while now and whenever I'm in a voice calls, the other person can hear the youtube videos I play, the music I play, and in general all audio that comes from my macbook. They can hear it super clearly along with my voice. Is there any way I can fix this? I've searched all over google.

edit: i am using the apple earphones with the mic

I'm going to buy my first MacBook , any advice?

    Posted: 24 May 2020 03:45 PM PDT

So I'm a Windows user for ages. I want to change to MacOS because of the fluidity with other Apple devices, and because my Acer laptop is almost dead. I'm a college student and I'd like to get an MacBook that will last 5+ years.

My mainly use is some Office, Youtube, Spotify, Netflix, basic video editing and Adobe Illustrator (last two as a hobby).

I was considering to get the MacBook Air 2020 i5 256 or should I update to the cheapest Pro one? And also, do you recommend switching to Apple now or maybe wait for the ARM based one? I'm saving for this laptop so please don't suggest me to get a super expensive one, I just can't :P

Kind of afraid of this change to a Macbook tbh haha

Just a rant.... I still hate my 2018 MacBook Air keyboard. Am I the only one that can't figure it out after 2 years? Not hating on Apple, just disappointed.

Buying a MacBook for the first time, want to make it last for a good 5 years. Help a guy out

    Posted: 24 May 2020 09:00 AM PDT

The air with an i5 and 8 gigs of ram is my best option, but the issues people have with thermals are making me wonder whether I should get the entry level pro with 512 gigs of storage. Is it worth the upgrade? Usage is mainly going to be for college so multiple tabs on chrome plus some Netflix, Spotify and office.
