2020 MBP 13" - How much of a difference is 8th gen vs 10th gen chip?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 02:44 PM PDT

    Hello,

I recently ordered a base model 2020 MBP with an 8th gen chip. I bumped it up to 16GB RAM and its going to be here by Thursday.

However, reading a lot of posts comparing the 8th gen model to the 10th and I'm still not entirely sure I made the right decision.

My main line of work is through Adobe Premiere, and I'm currently using a mid-2014 MBP that it is still holding up very well, in terms of producing 1080p videos up to 60fps. Rendering speed isn't horrible for a machine that is a 4th gen chip and half the RAM. I'm not planning on using it for a graphic powerhouse or gaming.

Ive been comparing specs all day and also seeing different opinions, but how much of a difference would I see if I dropped the extra $500 for so and swapped it for a model with a 10th gen chip? Would my rendering speeds or general QOL be improved that greatly? Or would it also be smart in terms of longevity?

    Any opinions appreciated. Thanks

How do I stop using iCloud?

I recently got a MacBook Pro and started making videos as a fun hobby. The videos are being stored in iCloud and I want them to be stored on my Mac itself.

    Delayed Macbook Pro 13In

    Delayed Macbook Pro 13In

So I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13in on the 17th. It's been processing since. It's supposed to be here in 3 days and it hasn't even shipped. I have an online work event on the 2nd that will last hours. My current MacBook Pro 13in 2015 is not working well. The keyboard doesn't even work. I'd like to be able to sit outside and stuff during that day. What's the likelihood I'll get it in time?

Would the battery get damaged if put on charge while working?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 10:19 PM PDT

I was thinking of buying a monitor for my MacBook Air 2019, to have a bigger display to work on. After watching many Youtube videos on how to connect the MacBook to the monitor, I have found that to use the MacBook (while it's closed/clamshell mode)with the monitor, I'll have to keep it plugged in and charging. If I kept the MacBook on charge for an entire day while using it on the monitor, would this hurt the MacBook's battery life? Is it safe to use a monitor with a MacBook?

    Here are a few videos showing what I mean : https://youtu.be/26gHuvhzNyI https://youtu.be/_rhYn8M_rvw https://youtu.be/Q2v7BrhfgwY

Is it possible to send macbook in for repair under AppleCare+ just to refresh some parts that aren’t broken? (screen and battery)

    Posted: 25 May 2020 05:10 PM PDT

I've never done it and don't know if it's possible. It just seems like it would be a good idea to pay the lower rate to replace the screen and the battery since they have the shorter lifespans.

It's $99 to replace a screen under extended warranty, and like $750 out of warranty. Battery has a similar markup I think.

Graphic design student and (light) gamer, which upgrade for 16" MBP?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 02:52 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm a graphic design student (although I'm done with studies in two months and will become a full-fledged UX/UI designer!!) and I also play Overwatch (on Bootcamp) and The Sims 4. I have a PS4 and a Switch too so I don't want my MBP as the main gaming platform, those are the only two games I'm going to play on the computer for sure. I'd like to be able to play them on 60fps and something better than mid settings. On my current 2019 13" MBP, I can play Overwatch on 60fps on low settings and Sims 4 are kind of struggling on low settings too because of all the add-ons.

I'dl like to do 3D modeling and some light rendering too.

I like my current MBP but I regret choosing the 251GB storage, it's just... Not enough for all of the design programs and the heavy files and I can't do any 3D rendering on it either, which is why I'm leaning toward a 16" 2020 MBP which has a "true" graphic card. I use photoshop to do illustrations and the computer is struggling on big canvas.

For a 16" MBP, I can choose choose to upgrade either the processor or the storage (to a AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory), not the memory because that one is too expensive on an already expensive machine, but if you guys recommend to prioritise memory over everything else I'll consider it.

What's the best choice here considering my usage?

    Thanks!

That kernal_task issue on Macbook Pros

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:08 PM PDT

You've probably already heard about that kernal_task issue where charging your Macbook Pro on the left side causes the computer to overheat and become borderline unusable.

What I can't find anywhere, and what I'm hoping y'all can help with, is if this issue affects Macbook Pros that only have two Thunderbolt ports.

Does anyone know? I'm surprised and disappointed I can't seem to find an answer to this question.

    Thanks!

When does Apple usually have discounts?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:02 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a Mac, and I'd like a discount, considering I'm getting one of the more expensive ones probably. There was a sale in the US for Memorial Day, but I don't need it quite right now. When will the next couple of discounts probably be?

MacBook 16 and 2-3 external monitors/iPads with clips?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:01 PM PDT

Is anyone clipping external monitors or iPads to your 16?

What clips or system are you using?

    What monitors or iPads?

I'm thinking about buying the 16 and adding at least one monitor/iPad clipped to each side and maybe a third one on top.

    Thoughts?

Would a small box of fridge magnets on my Mac cause any issues?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 02:31 PM PDT

Someone placed a small box (could fit in your palm) on my 2019 MacBook Air and in the box were a bunch of fridge magnets. I instantly removed it and put it far away after seeing this. Is there any way this could have caused damage? I went on safari after this happening and my google account was not signed in as it usually is. Please let me know and thanks for the help

MacBook Air intel core i5 late 2015 is overheating and often shuts down on its own

    Posted: 25 May 2020 01:50 PM PDT

It's an older computer but I do love it, it's been overheating rather often and I no longer use a keyboard cover due to this. It will only run one program at this point, Chrome, and I am more than ok doing a factory reset of the computer or taking off all old files but was wondering if there was anything else I could do to stop this from happening?

MBP Base Model or MBA? 2020

    Posted: 25 May 2020 01:43 PM PDT

Looking to buy either the MBP 2020 or the MBA 2020.

I just use my laptop for light internet browsing, email youtube assignments and surfing the web. I occasionally code using R/R studio and video edit on iMovie and photo editing.

To my understanding the MBA has poor ventilation? How noticeable is it?

I would get 16gb ram, 256 gb ssd, and upgrade to the 10th gen i5 for the MBA ($1500). If I were to get the MBP, i'd just upgrade the memory to 16gb from the base model ($1900).

    Which seems better?

MacBook Pro 13“ 2020 vs MacBook Pro 16“

    Posted: 25 May 2020 03:19 AM PDT

Hello! I am thinking about buying my first MacBook and I was considering the 2020 MacBook Pro 13" 2.0 GHz 10th Gen i5, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage or the MacBook Pro 16" with i7 and also 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

I know that the main difference would be the dedicated GPU on the 16" version. The price difference would be about 400€.

More power would be nice but I also have heard a lot of problems regarding the 16" version of things like overheating or loud fan noises, mostly caused by the GPU.. and I was wondering if it would be worth the 400€ upgrade.

I am mainly going to use it outdoors since I have a strong PC that I use at home. It is gonna be used for simple stuff and also used for university, where I'm studying IT, so it should be able to run IDEs, but I'm sure both versions are able to do that.

The size and the lighter weight of the 13" does sound more appealing to me, since I'm gonna have to carry it around but 400€ does feel like a small amount for an upgrade..

What would you guys buy and if you have a 16" version, did u have any overheating/fan noise problem?

    What should I get

    Posted: 25 May 2020 03:24 PM PDT

I am looking to get a MacBook Pro 2020 13" with an i5 and 16gb of ram but I am wondering if I should wait to see if Apple will bring out a 14" version with dedicated graphics for around a similar price or a little more and also if they did bring out a 14" would it be late this year or early next year thank you :)

Fan Noise Macbook Pro 16 vs 13

    Posted: 25 May 2020 11:37 AM PDT

I'm considering switching from my 2018 Macbook Pro 13-inch to the 16-inch model. I've read many comments online about loud fans on the 16-inch models (especially when attached to external monitors). My workflow is fairly light and mainly productivity-focused: 20+ chrome tabs open, multiple MS Office tools (Onenote, Excel, Word, Onedrive), Lightroom/Photoshop, and Spotify all running simultaneously. I'd say the vast majority of the time my 13-inch Macbook Pro is absolutely silent with no fans running, even attached to 2 external displays. Who has been in a similar situation workflow-wise and either made the switch or using both devices? What has your experience been like?

    Need help asap

    Posted: 25 May 2020 10:06 AM PDT

I'm stuck in a country where Apple store is closed due to the current situation. My Mac Air was bought a year ago. It's pretty new. However now I'm having an issue. I will provide the link for the pictures: https://imgur.com/gallery/njvSdwJ I don't know what to do. I am worried that once Apple opens here, they'll want to replace the entire a screen so that will be almost the same price as my laptop. Did anyone have similar issue?

    Questions regarding to mAh

    Posted: 25 May 2020 08:40 AM PDT

I saw that my Macbook Air has 4000 mAh of battery and my iPad 2018 has 7000 mAh of battery. Can anyone explain to me how the unit "mAh" works? I personally would assume that the Macbook Air will use and require more power than my iPad. However, turns out the Macbook Air can run up to 10 hours with its 4000mAh of battery? Are these different kind of battery or different unit of measurement? Would be glad if anyone can explain it to me as I couldn't find anything online. Thanks.

    Graphic Design student

    Posted: 25 May 2020 04:14 AM PDT

My second hand 2010 MacBook Air has served me well throughout my first year, but I decided its time I had an upgrade. I'm looking at MacBook Pro mid range, with 2.0ghz and 512gb. 16gb RAM.

With student discount I could get it for 1.6k, am I being daft with money and should get 8gb Macbook instead for 1.1k? I was thinking that 8gb May be outdated in a few years time, and I'm planning to use next MacBook for the next 5-10 years easily, having seen how responsive my MacBook Air still is despite being 10 years old.

The softwares I use - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom and After Effects.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Macbook Pro 2017 vs iPad Pro 2020

    Posted: 25 May 2020 05:03 AM PDT

    Hi,

I get this is not a "like-for-like" comparison but am thinking of getting a 2020 iPad Pro (+ magic keyboard) to replace my 2017 Macbook Pro as it would be much easier to carry around an iPad with me on my travels in terms of size and weight.

I'm wondering how much of a drop-off in performance I can expect with the iPad? For example, will it be much less quick/smooth in general day-to-day use (eg, web browing, watching movies)? Will it be much less quick/smooth in running more resource-intensive applications like Lightroom? Are there any other major disadvantages with the iPad I should consider before making a decision?

My MacBook Pro is a 13.3 inch 2017 model (with touchbar), 3.3 Ghz dual-core i5 processor, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD.

I am thinking of replacing it with the 12.9 inch 2020 iPad Pro with 1 TB storage.

Many thanks in advance for your insights/recommendations!
