    iPod 20th Anniversary

    Posted: 16 May 2020 03:34 PM PDT

Believe it or not in almost a year, iPod will be 20 years since the announcement of the iPod in 2001. Apple have been keeping the iPod name alive with iPod Touch, with the last release in 2019 I'm starting to believe that one of the reasons Apple have kept iPod alive is for the 20th anniversary. Does anyone believe that Apple will do anything for this milestone? I'm thinking a special edition iPod or marketing, let me know your thoughts.

New Music app isn't as good as iTunes was at managing older iDevices

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:28 PM PDT

I just stumble upon an older (2007) iPod nano and went to change some music, since it had all the stuff I liked from WAY back, and I realized how much of a pain it is to delete just a few songs. I tried to delete them in the new music app and it wouldn't delete the songs. Then I went into the finder and it doesn't let you delete songs there. I was about to go with a second source for managing my music, but I realized that you can sync playlists and stuff like in iTunes. I personally HATE the syncing since it always tries to delete EVERYTHING that I have on my device and usually (in the case of photos) they are no longer in the location of the previous sync. Well, I ended up giving in to the sync because I was just loading music for my daughter but it got me pretty frustrated with how far Apple has fallen. I am an Apple guy, I had apple devices ranging back to the mid 90's and I always get frustrated when there is an update that makes older devices no longer function the way they were designed. The latest MacOS update has had its fair share of these changes and I had a lot of programs that no longer work because they are 32 bit.

    Why?

Why is it that advancement means leaving Apple device users without the support of functionality of previous devices. I get the whole "Advancement leaves things behind" but if the OS is so advanced why can't it still allow older programs and devices to function the way they should. Why can't I have 32 bit programs run on my computer anymore if the new OS is so advanced that should be no problem for it?

Same for programs that run with classic mac II's and the like, they should be simple to run with how far computing has come so why can't they?

The strange thing is that the newer OS's tend to run slower, have more crashes and save less time than the older versions. It makes me sad to see the day where I am seriously contemplating getting a Linux box over an Apple simply for the functionality, and the ability to run anything I WANT on instead of what a company wants me to run on MY computer. Please Apple, change your ways back to user friendly, time saving and helpful. I know too many life-time Apple users that are going to abandon Apple with their next computer for the very reasons I have mentioned. Please listen to your customers over your share holders again.

I just released Oh Bother, an app about working from home without distractions from housemates.

    Posted: 16 May 2020 09:44 AM PDT

    Hi Apple folks 👋

I'm new here, but I understand you're willing to put up with a little self-promotion on Saturdays, so hear me out!

I released a rather simple little app this week to help you and your housemates avoid poorly-timed interruptions when you're working from home together. It's simple to use, it's beautifully designed (in my humble opinion), it runs entirely on your own private iCloud account, and it's free.

My little app generated a bit of buzz this week, and people seem to be enjoying it, but this is also very much a v1. I've got lots of ideas for how I might improve this thing and make it more useful to more people, but I'd love to hear your take if you've got a few minutes to give it a try.

Check it out: Oh Bother on the App Store

And read a little more about it here: 9to5mac article

    Thanks, and happy weekend 🥳

Edison Email App - Major Security Breach

    Posted: 16 May 2020 08:24 AM PDT

I'm using a throwaway just in case this is a targeted attack + this is still ongoing.

There has been a serious breach of security for Edison Mail app users.

My friend received an email from someone that alleges to have received access to their email inbox on the Edison Mail app. They also attached images to prove this.

My friend also then found that they had received access to 10+ other users' inboxes on their Edison app.

They've deleted the app (hopefully removing their access) and have stopped using Edison Mail + changed passwords. I'd advise everyone to STOP using Edison Mail immediately.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? It appears that one other user has also had something related happen to them. Link

New app: Incognito, a private web browser in a share extension

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:17 AM PDT

    [tl;dr App Store link]

I'm a big fan of SFSafariViewController, but it has 3 shortcomings that my new app aims to fix:

    1. SFSafariViewController has no private mode, but sometimes that's what I want… like when I see a link to Bloomberg and want to open it without cookies to avoid the paywall. :P
    2. Not every app uses SFSafariViewController, or uses it well. Some kick me out to Safari, while others have gross in-app browsers I'd rather avoid (lookin' at you, Instagram). Ideally, I would always have the choice to open a link inside the current app.
    3. SFSafariViewController is great for links, but I wish I could easily use it for search. I'd like to select the word (or class name!) I'm not familiar with, tap the "Share" context menu, and then search Google in an SVC right inside the current app. There's no way to do this now!

So I built Incognito, a private browser you can open anywhere via the share sheet. It supports both URLs and plain text, and is built using WKWebView — SFSafariViewController can't do private mode. It also has options to open in other browsers, strip AMP from your URLs, and save your browsing history with a passcode lock. It's free to try and just 2 bucks (American) to buy, so please check it out!

I made Thyself, a journaling app that looks like your typical messaging app. Keep in touch with yourself the way you keep in touch with others. There's also a catalog of prompts to answer and you can express your feelings with emoticons.
