Simplest app that allows my mom to share her iPad screen with my MacBook Pro (so I can provide remote tech support)?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 04:20 PM PDT

Ideally, I'd be able to remote into her iPad to clean it up, fix an issue, help her out. But I assume my MacBook Pro can't control her touch-interface iPad. So the next best thing would be a very, very simple screen share app.

I'm driving to her assisted living place tomorrow and a nurse will bring her iPad outside to me. I plan to download Zoom and see if it's simple to use Zoom's screenshare feature, to see how her iPad looks from my computer.

My mom is awesome and I'd like to make it easy to help her. Guidance over the phone isn't cutting it, as I just can't see what her iPad is doing and she has a terrible time hearing me anyway (and she is just lost technically -- she's 85 and has had a bit of cognitive decline).

If you know of something better, like some fancy cross-platform TeamViewer action, I'm all ears. Thanks! Sorry for the blather.

Solved my thermal throttling and overheating issues by switching from Chrome to Safari on my 2019 15" MacBook Pro!! Chrome on MacOS is malware, it's official!

    Posted: 16 May 2020 05:39 AM PDT

Solved my thermal throttling and overheating issues by switching from Chrome to Safari on my 2019 15" MacBook Pro!! Chrome on MacOS is malware, it's official!

So, I had in the past created multiple posts trying to solve my overheating, thermal throttling and laptop acting super slow issues, which can be found here: 1, 2 and 3. My issue was that the MacBook would start thermal throttling to the point of making it unusable after around 30 min of usage.

I had tried multiple things in the past including:

    1. Resetting SMC and PRAM/NVRAM.
    2. Turning on the Air Conditioner on full blast (solved it for 20 min before it started getting throttling again).
    3. Messing around with the Energy Saver settings.

My workload is about 20-30 Chrome tabs and I was super mad at Apple that my laptop wasn't even able to run those smoothly when I have 32 GB RAM. The situation was even worse because I wasn't able to go to the Apple Store due to coronavirus so I literally wasn't able to get any work done.

During the last few days it got so bad that I couldn't even use my laptop and was really considering just selling my laptop online and buying a new one because I thought it was a hardware problem.

Anyway, as a last ditch effort, I booted into Windows 10 using Bootcamp and started running the same workload as I usually do and suddenly all my problems were gone. This led me to believe that it was a software problem rather than a hardware problem as I had previously thought.

Still, at this point due to my years of usage of Chrome without issues plus an inherent trust in Google didn't make me check the browser (so obvious, I know.....). First, I deleted all my unnecessary applications assuming there was malware in one of them. When the problem still persisted, by elimination the only one remaining was Chrome. At this point, somehow I still didn't think it could be Chrome due to my blind trust in it but I decided I should just switch over all my tabs to Safari and check. Lo and behold, all problems disappeared: no more throttling, no more overheating, Mac is working as smooth as NEW! I only had 2 extensions on my Google Chrome: uBlock Origin and a Password Manager extension so it could be those but I think there's it a high probability that it was just Chrome doing some shady ass stuff in the background.

Just thought I should make this topic since Chrome is THE most widely used browser. Obviously my anger has shifted now from Apple to Google. So, I won't be a user of Chrome anymore and neither will I be a shareholder of Alphabet anymore. Larry, Sergei and Sundar, very disappointed in you!

A very smart man once told me: "If you are not paying for it, you are the product!". Should have taken him more seriously.

If anyone is having the same issues, try switching to Safari from Chrome. Hope this helps someone! :)

Screenshot of throttling on CPU when using Google Chrome. As you can see, my laptop was pretty much unusable at this point.

After switching to Safari, everything goes back to normal.

Screen Time useless because it doesn't even know or calculate based on which app is being used / on top / in focus?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 01:44 PM PDT

What's the point of the stats that break down which app was used for how many hours, when it just calculates based on when the app was opened and then when the app quits?

e.g. When I multiple three browsers open, and watch movies, and open a document, and Mac OS can't tell when I'm using which of those apps I'm specifically using? They'd all have the same hours clocked.

    Sleep mode or shut down?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 12:45 AM PDT

Is it safe for the life of the battery to let sleep MacBook when I don't use it? I always shut down the old MacBook I had, but recently I read that it's not the best thing to do. So, I just upgrade to the new MacBook Air 2020, and I don't know how to behave. Thank you!

If I downgrade my Mac to Mojave, will it break Notes/Reminders syncing with my iPhone on iOS 13?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 01:44 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have had it up to my neck with Catalina on my Mac mini and am looking to downgrade to Mojave (constant crashing, freezing, monitor issues).

If I downgrade to Mojave, I assume Notes and Reminders will not sync with my iPhone and iPad now as my Mac will be on the newest version of those apps, whilst my mobile devices will be on the updated version in iOS 13?

Is this correct? Has anyone else done this?

    Thanks for your help.

Screenshot tool with OCR and custom domain config?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 01:34 AM PDT

    On the hunt!

Been looking at everything from Monosnap, Lightshot, Greenshot, Nimbus...

Gyazo + Evernote have OCR but no custom links, Gyazo links don't seem professional imo, and Evernote links are crazy long.

Droplr and CloudApp are nice but no OCR. Custom domains though.

I know I'm being a stickler but maybe somebody knows of a sleeper tool I haven't found.

If there's nothing to be found I'm thinking my best very would be to go with Droplr and CloudApp with their custom domains, and then save the image to a misc folder and use some tool to auto ocr that folder...

I essentially want to be able to search all my screenshots easily, but also share them with a professional link, ideally with my company's branding.

Apps/Programs are opening on Login but everything related to Login is turned off

    Posted: 16 May 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Safari, Notes, just anything that I use, every time I boot up my MacBook Air all these programs are automatically opened.

I fully quit every program when I'm done. The login list in Users & Groups is empty. In my Dock I have "Open at Login" unchecked for every app. I'm confused why things are automatically opening.

    Device: 2014 MacBook Air

    OS: Catalina Version 10.15

My MBP 2017 (13inch, no touch bar) shutdown itself after log on.

It didn't occur for log on with power plug in and then I can use normally after removing the power.

    I'm on latest MacOS.

Storing on icloud, but not locally?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:19 PM PDT

non-macos-user here, trying to help my partner out. She has a macbook air running catalina 10.15.2, and she pays for extra icloud storage. Lately she's had to do a fair bit of video editing on her machine to teach online classes, and storage is running very low. Is it possible to just dump a whole lot of video files onto her icloud, without storing them locally? After a bit of googling it seems like the os is supposed to do that for you, shifting stuff around as space is needed, but I'm not sure that's happening as well as it could be.

iTunes metadata when importing from a CD

    Posted: 16 May 2020 06:19 PM PDT

I just built a server and I want to rip all of my old cds that I have into iTunes but they always appear as nameless tracks. Does anyone have a good program that I can use to add meta data? I have about 1 TB of music that I want to add so adding the names individually isn't something I particularly want to do.

I'm still on macOS Mojave on a 2012 MacBook Pro. If that helps.

Can anyone tap to minimize Catalina Music?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 10:03 PM PDT

Is it just me or does double tapping on the Music window do nothing? Every other app minimizes (or zooms depending on which behavior is selected in sysprefs) when double clicking EXCEPT Music. How is that possible? Im really starting to feel like someone just intentionally bungled this app, its full of things that dont even make sense. The shuffle and repeat icons only are displayed when you activate one of them. But then afterwards they are shown greyed out when they are off. Its not like something is ever displayed in their place I guess someone just thought buttons that only appear when you turn them on was a real slick design concept.

Question about iCloud, iCloud Drive, iCloud Music and Family sharing....wow its expensive

    Posted: 16 May 2020 01:03 PM PDT

Am I looking at this correctly? If I extend the storage to 2 TB and move my family into the share plan and sign up for Apple Music the monthly bill will be:

    2 TB = $10 /month

    Family Share = $15 /month

    Apple Music = $10 /month

    So $35 a month for this? *12 = $420 a year.....is there a discount for bundled services at all?

Question about High Sierra to Catalina, GarageBand and Logic Pro X

    Posted: 16 May 2020 09:23 PM PDT

Ok: • I want to download Logic Pro X but it says I need macOS version 10.14.6 or later is required. • My macOS is High Sierra 10.13.6 right now. • It looks like that is the latest version of High Sierra. • Is Catalina safe to use yet? I want to be able to have access to Garageband as I learn Logic. • I'm in the middle of many projects on Garageband that use a few free 3rd party plugins. Not sure if they're 32-bit plugins yet, but I've heard Catalina ONLY runs 64-bit programs. Does anybody have any advice on what I should do or again if Catalina is safe, pros and cons? HALP!

    Posted: 16 May 2020 05:15 PM PDT

I've been trying to get the drivers for three fucking days but it seems that not a single human being has ever for any reason uploaded them to the internet and bootcamp will not download them *at all*. If anyone has the windowssupport folder for my bootcamp version please give me a google drive link or something. im on a 2017 macbook air if that makes any difference. The only solution i have found is an app called brigadier but i cant use it without network drivers which i dont have because i dont have the bootcamp drivers. sorry if this is the wrong sub to ask this but this is really agitating.

Using tab key in Safari for faster navigation

    Posted: 16 May 2020 12:16 PM PDT

In Chrome and Firefox I can begin a browsing by using the keyboard only like this: * Opt + L -> Changes focus to search/url bar * (Begin typing) * Tab -> To cycle through the suggested options * Enter -> To navigate selected option

In Safari, the tab key does not cycle through the suggestions, instead it moves focus to the next menu button. Is there a way to change tab key behavior as the other browsers? Anyone else feel my pain?

    Cable recommendation

    Posted: 16 May 2020 07:26 PM PDT

I do a lot of work with music, and have two external 4K displays hooked up to my Mac mini. I'm using two LG 24UD58-B monitors, but I cannot get 60Hz out of them using an HDMI cable, which is then connected to a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI Adapter. On LG's website, it says 60Hz is only possible with a DisplayPort cable. I'm not sure which cable I would need in order to get 60 Hz on both of these monitors, so if anyone could recommend one, and which way it should be connected, I would really appreciate it. For example, would I need a Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort cable, with the DisplayPort end connected to the monitor, and the Thunderbolt 3 end connected to the Mac mini itself? Getting only 30Hz out of these monitors makes them feel really sluggish so I would definitely prefer to get the 60Hz out of them if I could.

    BBEdit, Catalina, and network shares?

    Posted: 16 May 2020 04:11 PM PDT

I recently got a new MacBook Pro running Catalina, and am encountering an odd issue with BBEdit. I have an AFP network share. If I use Finder to navigate to a file on the network share, right-click and select "Open In... BBEdit", it opens fine. But, if I try to edit and save it, BBEdit freezes with a spinning beach ball, and I have to force kill it.

If I open the the file from within BBEdit (File -> Open and then navigating to it), I can edit and save the file just fine. Local files work fine no matter how I open them. I've used BBEdit on prior computers with earlier versions of MacOS and never had a problem.

Any ideas on what could be the cause?

EDIT: Worth mentioning, I can edit the same files fine with other programs such as TextEdit, even if they are opened from Finder.
