My 2-day experience with my first Apple device (iPhone SE 2020)

    Posted: 14 May 2020 08:08 AM PDT

Hello. I have been an avid Android user for roughly 10 years, having a extensive range of Android phones, tablets, etc. I've considered myself a power user of Android, doing things such as rooting, unlocking bootloaders, custom roms, etc. I also used to hate on apple a lot, picking on the high prices, bendgate, and just overall being a ignorant Android fanboy. I had zero intentions and defended myself against ever using an Apple device... Until 2 weeks ago.

About 2 weeks ago, My Moto E5 Plus ended up dying (I assume it's the battery), and instead of replacing it, I decided to look at a new phone. My original thought was the Pixel 3a. Was telling a friend I was going to buy it. but then he told me about the new iPhone SE that dropped. I bashed it, saying it was a probably a pile of crap with 10 year old specs, then he linked me to the specs. BOY WAS I WRONG.

I was floored about it including the flagship Apple CPU in a 400 DOLLAR price tag. As much as I hated Apple, I know the Apple chips are best in class in terms of performance and battery life. That alone was when I put my guard down and thought to myself "Maybe I should just learn up on Apple a bit". Found out that Applecare was pretty inexpensive, 3 free months of Apple Music, and how straightforward and easy iOS is. After a little bit of thinking about it, I decided to take the plunge. I bought the iPhone SE 2020 Black 64GB model. Two days ago it arrives in the mail. My life in tech was about to change.

Holding the iPhone in my hands for the first time ever, it felt amazing in the hand, Is the perfect size for me and it's very beautiful and very well made. I know everyone has moved on to the iPhone 11 series and prefers its form factor, but this is new to me and I love it. Turned it on, set up my Apple ID for the first time, and applied for 200GB iCloud data and the 3 free months of Apple Music. Oh and I bought Minecraft, none of my devices go without it.

First impressions of the home screen were very good. I've found I preferred all the apps being on the main screen over Android's app drawer, however some will say otherwise. It feels very clean and dare I say organized. All the built-in iOS apps are TURBO FAST. I can't even count how fast opening the weather app is because it feels almost instant. I've seen some quick Android devices but even some $1000+ Android phones are not this fast. The battery life is very decent given the very small battery in this phone. I seem to be able to get a full day out of it for what I do, but I will see how that becomes in the future.

The camera is fantastic too. Being able to shoot 4k60 is so cool. Too bad I cant take advantage of the front camera in terms of FaceID and animoji, but $400 I am not complaining.

The charging cable is one thing I dislike. Using USB-C and MicroUSB for many years It's going to be difficult to switch to Lightning and I hope Apple moves to USB-C with there iPhones going forward.

Another thing I dislike is the lack of customisability and third party apps like APKs. I always loved to throw emulators on my phone and play my favorite games where I go, and it's too bad that the only way I can do that is by jailbreaking, but I think I am willing to sacrifice that as the iPhone seems very stable, and I prefer using physical buttons for games anyway.

After all of this, I think I am starting to understand why Apple devices are more pricier over others. Build quality, decent support, and a very tight ecosystem that just works. Needless to say this experience changed the way I think of Apple, and I am now more than willing to try out more Apple devices in the future. Might look at a Apple Watch soon perhaps, and maybe an iPad. I also hope Apple will bring more programs to interface with the iPhone to Windows based PCs.

Now this doesn't mean I hate Android now, There are MANY things Android can do over iOS, and I will always like it, but now I feel iOS is much better for me and for what I do with my phone, and this will start making me look at brands in a different way.

Thanks for reading. Sorry if this is all over the place but I've just been exited to write this.

Why is Apple still not claiming Shazam as its own app?

    Posted: 14 May 2020 04:31 AM PDT

When Apple acquired Siri, Beats Music (renamed to Apple Music), Workflow (renamed to Shortcuts), Beddit and Dark Sky, they immediately transferred the apps from their original developer's profile to that of Apple's. When they acquired Shazam, they did change the copyright to Apple Inc. for a short while, then reverted it back to Shazam Entertainment Ltd. They also announced to sunset Shazam Encore, yet two years later, it's still getting regular updates.

Is there any reason Shazam is getting this special treatment? Are they still operating independently? As you can see on the App Store, Apple isn't mentioned anywhere except in their Privacy Policy.

I guess this doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but I'm just very curious.
