Posted: 12 May 2020 10:57 AM PDT TL;DR: Apple giving me a new 16" MBP to replace my lemon 15" MBP So, my MBP 15" 2017 died for the 3rd time a couple of weeks ago, and I was unable to go to the apple store since they're all closed due to the pandemic. I went in to a local service provider and got the logic board replaced. They were also kind enough to replace the screen for me because i had a small dent in the corner. I'm covered with Apple Care + til June 18th so it was all free. I got the machine back on Friday and on Saturday it died on me again. Like NO power at all. Zilch. Nada. So I went back into the service provider and after hearing my case, they mentioned that apple will consider replacing your machine after 3 known repairs. Well, given that I had that, I decided to call them up and after 2 hours on the phone, the Tech Support Analyst was kind enough to provide a replacement model for my 15" MBP upgraded to 16gig with a Baseline 16" MBP! All they asked for is how much $ I spent on the initial purchase. It should be shipping out this week! [link] [comments]

TIL you can scan scan documents from your iPhone and Mac Posted: 12 May 2020 03:15 PM PDT Today I learned that you can scan a document from your iPhones camera and have it create a PDF on your Mac device. All you have to do is connect your iPhone to your Mac via charging cable and open up preview. Once opened, click on the "File" tab and select "Import from iPhone". After that, select "Scan Documents and it will open up a modified version of your phones camera so you can scan documents. After that, it will automatically save it as a PDF. Super cool feature I just found as I was waiting for my printer to painfully scan 2 sheets of paper which can take 5 minutes.. [link] [comments]

Posted: 12 May 2020 05:52 AM PDT Hey, I would like to know your opinion on the concept of "Future Proofing", especially when buying a new computer, in this case a Mac. What should you think about when you buy a new computer? Let's take my example. I have had a Macbook Air model 2013 with all the options (i7, 512GB SSD, 8GB Ram) for 7 years. It continues to work perfectly, I have no problems with it. Nevertheless, since 4 years, I've been making video montages under Final Cut Pro on a weekly basis as well as thumbnails on Photoshop. For basic video montages, it's still very good, as soon as they get more complex, it gets complicated. That's why, in the coming days, I'm going to buy a 16" Macbook Pro. I already have a model in mind following your recommendations: i9 2.3; 1TB; 32GB RAM; AMD 5500 8GB. Nevertheless, I can't find a consensus on the following question: When buying a new model, is it necessary to systematically reason with this notion of "Future Proofing"? If I continue with my example, the question would be: In 5 years, will a boosted model still be able to meet my needs (as opposed to a basic model)? Or on the other hand, whatever model you choose, in 5 years, it will be obsolete and you will have to change it anyway if you want to continue doing video editing in 4K in a fluid way. That's the debate I'm having right now. Is it worth it to add another 1000 euros because it guarantees you a computer that will still be as powerful in 8-10 years, or on the contrary, it will not be the case and in 5 years, you will have to put 3000 euros back on the table no matter what you choose? You understand my reflection, this sustainability story is my haunting. As much concerning iPhones, I like to change every 2-3 years, as much as a computer that costs at least 3000 euros, I prefer to change it as little as possible in the years to come. The idea is to have a machine that meets my needs as long as possible, here, editing 4K videos on 5 minutes to 1 hour rushes smoothly on FCPX (and using Photoshop too) today and for years to come. So, is it worth adding a 1000 euros option? Does it guarantee a better hold over time? You'll understand that I base my reflection on my user experience of my 2013 Air model. 7 years later, it still works very well, it's only saturated because I have a need that didn't exist 7 years before and it didn't do for the video, but if it didn't, I could still keep it. I want to make it clear that video is not my job. It's a passion I have for a sport that made me open a YouTube channel and thus get into video editing. We can also look at the problem the other way around: Would a Macbook Pro with all the options in 2012/2013 continue to perform well in 2020 to edit video in 1080p and 4K relatively smoothly? So what's your opinion on the subject? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Experience with Phobio - Apple Trade In - how to use gift card Posted: 12 May 2020 10:06 AM PDT I never saw any real directions on how to use the credit from an Apple Trade In, so I called them and wanted to share. Let's not talk about whether we should use Phobio or not, which by the way, is not a very good service which we all probably already know. Anyway I sent in two laptops and was quoted 190 and 250. I ended up getting 70 and 250 and took the offers, but am still waiting on the gift cards. The important part to know is the 30 day rule. Basically you can make a purchase on Apple.com, pay full price, get your gift card by email, then call within 30 days of purchase to apply the gift card to your order. They will essentially change the payment method and refund you the credit. So hopefully that is helpful to someone out there! [link] [comments] |
