For those of you who care about Privacy and Security...how much do you trust Apple? Posted: 11 May 2020 09:26 AM PDT I have been thinking of switching over to Apple mainly due to how they treat privacy and security. I have been an Android user for a very long time (since version 1.6) and lately I have become more disgusted by Google. I've done what I can to take back my privacy, but Android is pretty crippled once I don't have the Play Store, and I am not comfortable with the rootkit that is Google Play Services installed on my phone. Is Apple's commitment to privacy and security sincere? Can I trust them if I switch over? I understand that there is a tradeoff between privacy/security and convenience, and if I understand that if you do not pay for a product then you are the product. If I pay that Apple tax, will they safeguard my privacy and security? On Android, if I want to maximize my privacy I need to NOT install Google Play Services. I need to use this thing called MicroG to "fake" the existence of Play Services. I need to install alternative app stores such as Aurora to get the apps I want. Apps which use Location (Uber, Lyft) don't work, or the accuracy is bad if I use Microg. To be honest, just to get privacy I need to hack my way around Android, which causes me to lose Security because of all these workarounds. I'm tired of that. If I go to iOS, how much of my privacy/security is safeguarded? If I install an app, like Whatsapp or Wechat (very bad examples, but I cannot force anyone to switch off) what can they see outside of the app? Can they access my data in other apps or are apps isolated into their own data folder? On Android there is still Work Profile functionality where I can sandbox a bunch of apps into one environment, but I don't think this exists for iOS. Staying with Android isn't maintainable in the long run. I won't get updates, so I'd have to trust others who build custom ROMs, MicroG could get blocked, Aurora could lose access to Play Store apps. Google doesn't care about privacy, so I might have to jump ship. [link] [comments] | ||
