Choppy animations on 2020 MacBook Air

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:31 PM PDT

I've been considering getting the 2020 Air as my girlfriend just bought one for herself (base model), but I notice that the animations seem to be a little laggy or choppy. Like whenever you minimize a page or scroll down in certain areas, it's just not smooth.

This is putting me off about the Air and I'd rather wait at this point for the Pro, but if it didn't have those choppy animations, then I'd definitely get the Air. Does anyone else notice this?

    Help setting password

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:56 PM PDT

I wanted to ask for help for changing my password on my computer. I want to make it so that when I open it, I only have to press enter to get past the password screen. An old school computer of mine was set up this way and I've tried changing it but I don't know how to make it so that literally just pressing enter is the password.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Will the $999 i3 MacBook Air still be better than the $1200 i5 one I had from 2013?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:51 PM PDT

So my laptop broke last night and I'm due for an upgrade anyways. This is what my current laptop had

    13 inch mid 2013 1.3 gHz dual core i5 processor 4GB memory 1600 MHz ddrs Intel graphics 5000 1536mb 121 GB storage

It was not the cheapest MacBook Air in 2013, but considering how things have gotten better- would the less expensive $999 MacBook Air be better even though it has the i3 processor?

    Extension Cord compatibility

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 10:44 PM PDT

I have a charger extension cord that came with a 45w charger I bought for my Early 2014m 13 inch Macbook Air. The chord is the Longwell E344534 (125V + 2.5A). I just bought a brand new Macbook Air. Is my old extension cord compatible with my new computer's 10W USB charger.

Best bang for your buck help me please

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 09:10 PM PDT

I'm trying to take advantage of all this free time and I want to learn how to code online here . So what's the best MacBook for around 1,000 to do that on. I would prefer a MacBook Pro for the way it looks but an air will do. Doesn't matter the generation. Thank you guys!

Mac Air vs. Pro for medical school

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:15 PM PDT

I'm starting medical school in the summer and will need to update my current mac air. I'm wondering if I should buy the newly released mac air or hold out for the new 13" pro. I want it to last all the way through medical school and maybe longer. It will mostly be used for exam software, downloading text books, various school activities, and streaming. I also have a 2019 Ipad pro and apple pencil that I will be using to take notes.

MBP 16" or wait for new MBP?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:27 PM PDT

I can get a new base model MBP 16" for a pretty good price and was wondering if anybody else is weighing this decision? My laptop will be at my desk 95% of the time and I don't do anything crazy intensive so the only reason for the 16" would be the bigger screen. I think the new MBP will pretty much have carry downs from the MBP 16" but I would expect 10th gen processors in the new MBP and probably the fast DDR4 from the new MBA. Btw, I prefer a quiet laptop over a powerful one but both would be good. Thoughts?

SSD Enclosure Question (13in. MBP Early-2015)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:27 PM PDT

The logic board on my 13-inch retina display MBP (Early 2015) broke and now it won't turn on. I am planning to remove the SSD and place it in an enclosure for data recovery.

My friend recommended this one, but it is much more expensive than any of the ones I have found on BestBuy, Amazon, etc. (~$20).

I'm assuming that there's a difference in the OWC Envoy Pro and other ones I see on the market. Can anyone explain the difference to me please?

Also, I am doing this extraction myself. So any tips from people who have extracted an SSD before would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are There Any Downsides to Keeping the Lid Closed When Using External Display

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I have a Macbook 2012 and I want to set it up to use an External Display, while keeping the MacBook closed and off to the side. Are there any downsides to keeping the display shut while using an external display when it comes to "stressful processes" such as movies/video or Photo Editing. I've pushed this MacBook before, was able to hear the fans spinning and everything. My only concern is will the heat have any negative effects on the internal display? Especially if the MacBook is sitting horizontal?

Upgrade or Replace 2013 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:44 PM PDT

    Hi,

My MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013 2.4 GHz Quad-Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) has been my computer for everything since I got it. Got me through four years of college with regular work in Final Cut, Premiere, Photoshop, etc. I also use it for Paradox games in Steam like EU4 and CK2, etc.

These days, I run an ECommerce site for my job so my work is online, lots of spreadsheets, light graphic design, etc., but even tasks like surfing on Safari and making spreadsheets are making it too hot to sit on my lap, the fans crank way up, everything is laggy after like an hour of use.

My question is - is there something relatively cheap I can do to improve these problems? Or is it time to upgrade? Physically, it is in great shape. For short quick tasks, it's tolerable. But for any "MacBook Pro" activity, it can't cut it anymore.

    Thanks!

USB C Power Output for new Macbook?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:54 PM PDT

    Mac in question: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-16/specs/

I'm looking to get a 10 port USB hub and usually they need an external power to power the usb ports.

There's an amazonbasics 10 port USB C hub rated at 65W with external power, but I thought USB C can output a sufficient amount of power not needing external power?

    nits and stuff

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:30 PM PDT

It looks like the only real complaints (or just downsides) people have b/t the new MBA and an MBP are:

    • less brightness in the screen
    • less power in the speakers
    • HEAT

Anyone who owns both a 13in newish MBP and a 2020 MBA what are your thoughts on these issues? Is the screen or sound noticeably different? Enough to matter? Is the heat thing an occasional issue when your computer is editing video and playing youtube and crunching a huge excel sheet? Or is it heating up because you opened 12 tabs in chrome?

    Thoughts?

Does the MacBook Air 2020 Overheats?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:21 PM PDT

Was just about to purchase a i5 MacBook Air 2020 256GB. But I saw there were reports of overheating. I surf the web and I do simple things but I run a lot at the same time. I don't game. I don't make any type of programs etc. I've always had a Mac but is this a reason to avoid purchasing

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:06 PM PDT

I don't even know which model I'm getting. It'll be coming to me second hand.

I use my iPad for some games, right now I've been playing some Baldur's Gate.

Will I be able to download this game to my MacBook?

Help! My 2012 MacBook Pro won't turn on at all

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:13 PM PDT

So I've been having battery issues for a while and it said replace battery, so I bought a new one. And after using it just fine last night, lo and behold, I cannot turn it on. Even charging it does nothing. The new one fortunately arrived the day before, so I replaced the battery yet it wouldn't turn on. Plugged it in, let it charge for a while, held down the power button. Nothing happens. No fans, no boot up noises, nothing on the screen. I have no earthly idea what's wrong, nor any idea how to proceed from here.

Can anyone help me? I need this computer urgently for work and I'm freaking out because I have no other viable alternatives (i.e. going to the library) because of COVID-19.

To make matters worse, all I have is an iPhone 5 that barely functions so I can hardly even navigate Safari to make this post.
