Is buying old technology worth it?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:20 PM PDT

I'm very confused. My mom's birthday is on Sunday and I was planning on getting her an ipad mini 3. However, my SO suggests it's old tech and if I'm spending so much money, it's pointless to throw it away on such an old model. My other option is iPad mini 4 which is slightly more expensive.

I don't think old tech should matter because my mom just uses the iPad for Facebook, Skype etc. But I'm not an Apple user so I have no idea what matters and what doesn't. Is the purchase worth it?

Note: I live in Pakistan in case it's relevant.

Edit: I also have my eye on iPad 7th Generation. It supports iOS 12. Is it a good buy?

A confusing and upsetting experience with my MacBook and/or Apple Support

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:32 PM PDT

Just wanted to start off by saying that I am definitely a huge Apple fan, I've been using their products for many years and the memories of pining for an iPhone as a teenager are still fresh in my memory. But recently I had a very bewildering experience with my MacBook and just wanted to hop on here to let everyone know about it.

I have a 2017 MacBook w/out touch bar and have been using it quite contently for the last 2-3 years or so with no problems. My only crime maybe being that I put off updates but lets be real I can't be the only one who does that. Recently I was feeling generous so I plugged my computer in and let it update from Mojave to Catalina, and left it to do its thing for ~1 hour. Upon returning I found that the computer was extremely low on battery even though it was plugged in the whole time and then the computer refused to boot up at all, leaving me with the black screen and a low battery symbol. Consequently I started a tech-support chat online but with no avail because they only offered software fixes to what seemed to be a hardware issue. My sister even kindly help me send out a call for help on this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/g5c3jl/mojave_os_to_catalina_os_update_left_2017_macbook/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Anyway in the end I left the computer plugged in overnight to see if it would improve things but alas, in the morning nothing had changed. So I brought my computer into the closest apple authorised service provider (I'm in NZ so there are no Apple stores here unfortunately). They then confirmed to me that a component near the USB-C hubs had short circuited and burned out which required the replacement of the whole logic board.

At this point I'm still a little bit in shock because yes I know that software things cannot cause hardware problems but the fact of the matter is this component stopped working after I commenced the update. I then decided to call into Apple support to see if I could get coverage for this as an extenuating circumstance (of course my 1 year hardware warranty has run out by now). A bit of a side note - I'm a university student so the cost of a logic board replacement is quite hefty for me and I just felt quite bereft because all I had tried to do was update the operating system, which usually is a straightforward no tears shed process. The Apple people in charge of my case even called the service repair centre to see if the damage could have been due to user fault but determined it was not. I felt that this was even more important because it confirmed to me that it wasn't because of the way I was using the MacBook that caused the sudden hardware failure but rather some undetected or unresolved issue in manufacturing (maybe?). However Apple has refused to cover the cost of the repair with no real reason as to why, except that they have never seen an issue like this before - but to me isn't this exactly the reason why you should cover it? A chance to show off their so called amazing Customer Support for a long-time customer or just as a show of compassion for a student that is now scrambling to recover and regroup resources during a strict lockdown in NZ.

In any case, the way this has all unfolded has been super disappointing for me, I now live in fear every time I hear the word update, which is sad because no tech-user should be afraid of new features and operating systems! I used to look forward to see what new features I would get with each update and now I just worry about if this will break my computer and cost me another $1000. Just wanted to put this out there and see if maybe anyone else has had a similar experience with their MacBook/Apple support. If so please let me know what happened in your case!

New Apple SE phone has me considering switching from Android to Apple

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:31 PM PDT

I'm a OnePlus 5t owner, very happy with my current phone but it is getting close to 3 Yrs old and I'm looking to replace. The new OnePlus 8 looks like a fine phone but the price in Canada is over $1000 dollars while the new Apple SE is just $600. I don't like the small screen on the SE but I think I can live with it. Also, all of the apps I use, are available on iOS so should not be an issue. One question though, is about casting. I use Google cast alot and wonder if that works on iOS?

    iPad + Cellular won’t activate

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 09:44 PM PDT

My iPad Mini 4's cellular connection stopped working this morning. I tried to troubleshoot until I finally just restored the whole iPad, thinking it was a software issue. Now while I'm trying to set it up again, it won't get past the activation page.

I have tried switching the SIM card to its previous SIM card, which is in another iPad of mine. No change.

    iTunes also can't activate it.

I've tried everything I can think of. Aside from calling either AT&T or Apple Support.

I want to gift my two old macs to friends. How can i completely wipe them like a factory reset or something?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:54 PM PDT

Not very tech savvy, but I'm wanting to essentially restore my old mac and macbook to like new, where none of my files can ever be retrieved, and they can set up their new mac as if it were brand new with current Operating systems, as min haven't been updated in years.

What can i do to accomplish this? As i said before im not super tech savvy so hopefully theres an easy way to do the job right. And time is not an issue because due to the pandemic i have tons of free time

Hey all. Tried to reboot my 2019 15 inch MacBook Pro after it wasn’t writing files to the desktop, and now the drive is unreadable. When attempting internet recovery, error code -2101F appears. What does this mean? Thanks.

Unable to erase disk when trying to reset macbook.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 08:28 PM PDT

Im trying to wipe my macbook before giving it away, so i want to erase the disk and OS and install current OS. Went through the necessary steps to reset my MacBook pro but when i get to the Disk Utility and try to erase the disk, the option for "Macintosh HD" is greyed out and therefore untouchable.

Its been so long i cant remember if i bought it with upgraded hard disk size or whatever. But there are other options that aren't greyed out.

Above "Macintosh HD" it says "750.16GB TODHIBA MK7559GSFX Media" not sure what that is, graphics card maybe???

Below "Macintosh HD" theres an option that says "disk1" and it says "Mac OS X Base System" immediately underneath it as if its within "disk1".

Anyone know if either of these are the disk im supposed to wipe?

Title: apple id paradox. Title2: mod wants a longer subject so I had to repost this with longer subject or else it wont get posted.

    • unlocking link/pass was sent to my email.
    • that email is the very id I tried to unlock in the first place.

its been 6 years now. is there any new update to get around this funny appleid paradox?

Want to record movie with Quicktime on 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro using iPhone 6S camera. Which cable will work?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 08:05 PM PDT

Hi, I have a standard charging cable hooked up to my MBP using a USB to Thunderbolt 3 adaptor but then Quicktime is not recognizing the camera. So what cable must I use? Will a true iPhone 6s to Thunderbolt 3 do the trick?

Question about the mail in for repair experience

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 08:00 PM PDT

Hi, I am currently waiting for my shipping box so I can ship in my iPhone XS Max for repair. If it matters I am making monthly payments for Apple care.

I am sending the phone in because a few days ago I was told my storage was full. This was the first time I got the notification, I had to go to work so I decided I would deal with it when I got home. That evening I plugged it into my Mac and imported all my pictures, but after specifying to delete old ones it didn't. I also couldn't delete the pictures on my phone. I also could not delete apps, could not open most apps, had no service because a cellular update failed, and could not see my contacts. When I had plugged it into iTunes, it immediately told me I had to restore it. Did the same thing on another Mac in the Catalina finder.

(Tried with both a 2017 MacBook Air running the latest version of Catalina, and a 2010 Mac Pro with the latest version of High Sierra iTunes, and Photos.)

I am sending the phone in because after about 6 hours total working with Apple over the phone, every time I go to restore I get errors 9, 35, or 47. Doesn't matter if I restart the computer or phone or if I try a different cable or USB port. Nothing would make it restore.

My question is both, has anyone ever experienced something similar and what can I expect from mailing it in? They said if I just wanted to swap the phone out I would have to pay money which I didn't do because I've never had to do that for any of the other devices I've had covered under Apple care+. Currently they are taking it in to further diagnose it and repair it.

What’s up with the speakers. Also the headphone jack doesn’t work when it’s pushed in all the way, you have to have it in a very specific position for it to work.

We're trying to see what's on our old ipad (first version). But when we charge it and try to turn it on, this comes up. What does it mean?

Apple Trade In - do I have to send old phone back?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:14 PM PDT

    Hello,

I recently purchased a new iPhone (UK) on the Apple website choosing the Apple Trade In option. I paid for the phone in the full amount with the understanding that I receive a refund when I send my old phone back through the postal trade in pack.

My question is, what happens if I don't send the phone back? Am I in a contract or can I just accept that I won't receive the refund payment for it and I've essentially just paid for the new phone in full?

    TIA

Odd iPad Air 3rd Gen w/ Logitech slim combo keyboard problem

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:10 PM PDT

I own an iPad Air 3rd gen and a Logitech slim keyboard combo case with a smart connector.

Both the apostrophe key and the back slash key suddenly do not register input, as in the character does not appear when typing, but the backlit keyboard lights up and if I press shift+apostrophe I do get the quote mark to appear.

I happen to have a work iPad on hand and these keys work fine when it's connected to the keyboard. So I've confirmed the keyboard isn't damaged.

I'm a little baffled. I don't think the smart connector on my iPad Air is damaged and I can't think of a setting that would affect this. Any ideas?

Edit: just tried a hard reset and it didn't make a difference.
