about to get my first macbook! Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:38 PM PDT i recently purchased a 2020 macbook air with a quad core i5 and it just shipped! its the most i've ever spent on a single item and i'm really excited to get it. i initially bought it with the intent to bring it to and from school in the fall but considering the state of things going on, it looks like ill be using it at home. i've used windows my entire life and i've dabbled in linux, is there anything that's dramatically different in macos that i should be keeping my eye out for? are there any tips and/or tricks that might be useful to a macos beginner like me? thanks in advance! Posted: 20 Apr 2020 06:35 PM PDT So my MacBook Pro 2017 (with touch at, valued at £2499) has a cracked display. I was wondering where I could get it repaired cheaply (student) or sell it to buy a cheaper MacBook [link] [comments]

Having a BRUTAL time finding a thunderbolt 3 dock to suit my needs Posted: 20 Apr 2020 05:38 PM PDT I have been trying to find a thunderbolt 3 dock to suit my needs for months now and feel like I'm running in circles. What I need:
Nice to have:
I thought the dell T16 dock would be perfect but after looking into it further it seems it doesn't work right with Macs. All the reviews and recommendations I see online are for the Caldigit, but the video outs are Display Port and I just can't afford to replace my monitors AND add a thunderbolt dock. Thanks! Has anyone bought a MacBook off of back market.com? Posted: 20 Apr 2020 10:23 PM PDT Looking to buy an older MacBook. I don't really care if it's an air or pro, I'm not a gamer I just want it for surfing the web and streaming Netflix etc. what's the best places to find cheap/refurbished macs? [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Apr 2020 03:30 PM PDT I don't know anything about MacBooks and the different models. I'm looking for a cheap used one off of eBay but I don't know what model would be worth it in 2020. Please help! [link] [comments]
Confused about upgrading HDD in mid-2012 i5 MBP Posted: 20 Apr 2020 09:17 PM PDT Hey all, I'm doing my friend a favor and fixing their macbook pro. I'm pretty sure the original 1tb HDD is dead so I was going to replace with a new 1tb HDD and reinstall OSX. But now that I look at it I'd like to replace the original 1TB HDD with a small SSD just big enough for OSX and program files and then replace the optical drive with a 1TB SSD for media but there are all sorts of conflicting posts online about compatibility. Can I replace the dead HDD with any 2.5" SSD? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Front facing camera suddenly blurry, out of nowhere. Posted: 20 Apr 2020 02:29 PM PDT I have a 2015 Macbook Air. I usually have no problems with it. I've been using it for video chats consistently since I got it, but just yesterday, the front facing camera went blurry. It's blurry on every video chat app and website, for no discernible reason. I've restarted and tinkered with settings but I can't figure out what happened or how to fix it. Anyone have a hunch here? Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 20 Apr 2020 05:24 PM PDT I'm having issues getting 4TB Seagate to show , nothing online or on YouTube works (I see this is a common problem with MacBooks). so I'm going to replace it, any suggestions? [link] [comments]
MacBook Pro early 2015 rapidly dying Posted: 20 Apr 2020 04:14 PM PDT My MacBook Pro early 2015 is rapidly dying. I could charge it to 100%, leave it unplugged overnight, and 12 hours later it's completely dead. Coconutbattery reports the battery health as 90% and the computer was actually purchased/manufactured in early 2017. Power nap is off. I did have issues with the computer randomly shutting down which I fixed by disabling/renaming the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter driver. So now I'm thinking there's a deeper voltage issue with my motherboard. Any ideas? [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Apr 2020 03:40 PM PDT I get inconsistent wifi with my MacBook Pro and wondering if the problem is my wifi card (hardware related). I have been doing some tests throughout the last couple days using Ookla Speed Test and found that sometimes I've been getting 0.5mbp/0.5mbp sometimes and then 10 minutes later 40mbps/16mbps. I don't have many devices connected to my router so it is not a saturation issue, and my phone seems to work fine when my MBP doesn't. I don't really know if there is a problem with my router, my browser (Safari) or just my wifi card. I can't even load any YouTube videos at the lowest resolution let alone load simple sites like Apple. Should I contact Apple Support? Should I check in with my ISP? Where should I start? Any help is appreciated, and sorry if this is not the right place to be posting. TIA [link] [comments]
MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro for College Posted: 20 Apr 2020 02:47 PM PDT Hello Reddit, I'm a rising college freshman looking to major in physics, math with computer science (math and CS combined into a single major) and minor in comparative media studies, but I can't figure out whether to get the Air or the Pro. Apps that I foresee myself using a lot are LaTeX, Python and C++ IDEs, XCode, Blender and other app/game design software, as well as The Sims 4 and Subnautica (and very possibly other games as well). I acknowledge the fact that the Pro has better internal specs, but I also like the sleek, lightweight design and color options for the Air, and couldn't care much for having a Touch Bar or not. Cost isn't necessarily a deciding factor for me, but I definitely cannot get the most specked-up Pro, and I'd like to use the extra money I would have spent on a Pro to better the Air's specs as well. This laptop would likely last me through all formur years if college, so between the Air and the Pro, which one should I pick? [link] [comments]

Can anyone recommend a good case for the new 2020 MacBook Air? Posted: 20 Apr 2020 10:42 AM PDT This is my first MacBook—I just ordered the new Air last night. It won't arrive until May 8-13 but I definitely want to get a good case. Are there any that you all can recommend? I'd prefer a case over a sleeve but if you have other suggestions I'm thankful for the advice. I'm a single mama with a six month old so trying to protect it as much as I can. I've been looking on amazon but a lot of reviews are saying the cases don't fit the 2020 model. If you have had success with amazon cases please let me know which one. TIA! [link] [comments]
macbook doesn't sleep when lid is closed Posted: 20 Apr 2020 06:45 AM PDT i had my keyboard replaced a month or two ago due to water damage i realised recently the battery has been draining overnight and found out that its because my mac doesn't sleep when i close the lid, so i guess something must've shifted whist they did repairs should i go back to get it fixed? what would be the pros/cons to having the macbook still awake when the lid is closed? i like how i can still listen to youtube with it closed, but other than that *shrugs* [link] [comments]
Can't scroll through Imessage Images On Macbook Posted: 20 Apr 2020 10:12 AM PDT I'm trying to look at all of the images on a particular Imessage conversation on my Macbook. I can't do this on my phone, because that particular conversation only has images up to a certain point. The conversation on my Macbook has everything. Anyway, I open my imessages, go to the conversation, click on details, and I can see about 6 of the photos in the chat, but the app won't let me scroll down. I know that there are more photos there because if I select a photo and press the shift button and the down arrow, it will open more photos. That's extremely time consuming, and I have to click through 50 different windows to see if I've gone down far enough. What can I do? It's a 13 inch retina from 2015. [link] [comments]
Bent case on 2019 16" Macbook Pro Posted: 20 Apr 2020 09:43 AM PDT Does anyone know what is involved for a bent case repair on a 16" MacBook Pro? I was in a car accident and my laptop was ever so slightly bent on the bottom case. I didn't notice it until I went to put it on a flat surface a couple of weeks later. Of course, the Apple stores are closed in the US so I can't get in to get them to quote it. I can't really be without it to send it in and wait for them to look at it. Just wondering if anyone has experience with how complex this is. [link] [comments]
Posted: 20 Apr 2020 09:18 AM PDT I have spilt clear nail polish on the right side of my MacBook trackpad, some of the polish has dried into the edges. It appears pretty minor on the outside and everything is still working perfectly, however, I would like to know if this is going to do any damage to the internals of the computer over time and if there is anything I should do, thanks. Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:16 AM PDT I am looking to follow a course I purchased on Udemy called 'iOS 13 & Swift 5 - The Complete iOS App Development Bootcamp' so I need access to a version of Xcode that will support this, assuming I need at least 2012 MacBook Pro or Air? Firstly I looked at some MacBook Pro's I'm looking on eBay and the prices seem to vary massively from £270-£350 for 2012 MBP Non-Retina so I initially thought this would be the one for me, but I don't think the low resolution screen would be beneficial as it will reduce the amount I can for on the screen so I preferably would like retina but aware that I'll lose the ability to upgrade. So I looked up late-2013 retina MBPs and their price seems to be from £375-£450 which gives slightly better CPU double the resolution but I'm concerned that I hear about some models having a bad graphics issue? Don't want to waste £400 on a faulty non repairable issue So I checked out 2014 MBP and they seem to be £450 to £500 and appear to be the same as 2013 but I haven't heard of any graphical issues these models so maybe more likely to not fail? Then looked at 2015 MBP and seen prices from £500-£550 and nearly every one I've looked at in this price range has been affected by Staingate, but I've heard this can be fixed worth listerine and patience? Then I looked at some MacBook Airs ranging from £350-£450 for 2013-2015 but I am concerned whether the performance will be good enough with an 8gb ram model for Xcode and some light photoshop for image editing and possibly light final cut for video editing, nothing major. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments]
2014(ish) MacBook Air will not turn on Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:13 AM PDT I'm trying to help fix my father in laws Macbook. It will not turn on. We've tried 3 different charges and I've gone through the "hold power for 10 sec" and "Shift Ctl Alt Power". Still no signs of life. Would love any troubleshooting help! Thanks! MDM of big corps, what can see they see? Posted: 20 Apr 2020 07:33 AM PDT One of my friend joined telstra recently and got a telstra macbook. Of course telstra installed its own MDM and some other things. I am just curious from the tech perspective, what are they capable of monitoring? How does it work exactly? The MDM seems to be installed on top of macOS, what if we install a bootcamp, are they able to find out too? [link] [comments] |
