Mac Mini A1283 as Time Machine server?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:02 PM PDT

Hi all, wondering if I would be able to use an old Mac Mini I've found second-hand as a Time Machine server. They're selling for ~$100AUD.

    The specs are as follows:

    (1) Apple Mac Mini A1283 Desktop Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 2.00Ghz 4GB 250GB Late 2009

    Model: Mac Mini A1283

    Processor: Core 2 Duo P7350

    Processor Speed: 2.00Ghz

    Processor Cache: 3MB

    Memory: 4GB RAM (2 x 2GB)

    Memory Type: DDR3 SDRAM

    Memory Speed: PC3-8500

    Hard Drive: 250GB

    HDD Interface: SATA

I'd be plugging in a 1TB SSD to undertake the backup.

Let me know if you think this is a worthwhile investment.

Just Got Macbook Pro 16", Horrified By Temperatures

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 05:57 PM PDT

So I got a MacBook Pro 16", the brand new 2019 model, with the Inteli i9 processor. The temperatures on it are, to put it lightly, horrifying. One of the first things I did with it was hop on a Zoom call, since we're all on lockdown and why not. During this call my laptop got so hot that I couldn't even keep it on my lap. What was more shocking is that the fans never turned on once during all of this.

I installed iStat Menus, and with that I saw that my CPU was between 150-160 degrees. This freaked me the hell out for a long time... only now I've realized that it was showing temperatures in farenheit instead of celcius. So I'm a bit calmer.

Still, I've found that simple tasks like installing something from homebrew will lead to temperatures spiking massively. I've only gotten things under control by customizing the fan settings using iStat so that they kick in earlier.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this. I really like this machine in general, I intend to really take advantage of all of its overpowered glory, but I don't want to melt the damn thing down.

PS. Now that I know the temps are in celcius, I'll be getting a better feel for if they are really ridiculous. If it can stay under 100C I feel that is acceptable to me, regardless of how it physically feels.

    iPhone 7 unusual battery health

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 06:51 PM PDT

Hello, i have a reconditioned iPhone 7 under iOS 13.3 since january. I received it with a battery health of around 70% which is quite low but was still ok. But today i checked it again and it's at 51%, i'm really concerned because the phone lost 20% of battery health in a span of 4 months and even if i use it a lot (i listen to music throughout the day) is it normal ? Also i wanted to replace the battery in an Apple store or at least a shop certified by Apple but i live in france and theses type of places are closed for an undetermined amount of time so if you have tips to save my battery life to at least be able to use it correctly i'll take them with open arms. Thank you !

(sorry if i made grammar or spelling mistakes as i mentioned i'm not a native english speaker)

Help! WiFi issues on a MB pro 2019

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:48 PM PDT

I've had the issue starting today but I'm getting 100 mbps on my WiFi but loading up chrome or safari pages takes a whole long time. Now I'm not one to complain about me just being impatient but I'm talking about the progress bar is literally stuck for a whole 2 minutes before it gets to loading the page. I originally thought it was a VPN issue so I got rid of my official school VPN. That fixed it for a little and made it a little quicker but not a whole lot. Definitely not a 100 mbps a whole lot. I've tried to do everything on the internet including delete profiles, resetting my router, connecting to other WiFi (my 5 ghz) and plenty of other articles. I also have an issue where whenever my laptop sleeps and I wake it my mouse gets stuck for like a minute before I can move it. It's been a long day of debugging but I would love some help on this. Thank you!

is "Your phone" app compatible with the iPhone?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:26 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I tried searching but the vague "your phone" doesn't really help matters. Does this app work with iPhone in regards to say texting? Would love to be able to receive and send texts on my pc. The "Your phone" app preview claims it does work with the iphone, but after I have granted them permission and downloaded the "edge" app and such, (and seeing no way of undoing giving them my email and permission).. I am thinking it does not actually work. Anyone know about this? Get it to work? Thank you.

My iPhone 8 Plus has just stopped recognising my WiFi (keeps saying 'incorrect password' though it isn't), can anyone help?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 09:24 PM PDT

My iPhone has been connected to the same WiFi at my home for 1 1/2 years (i.e. that is how long I have had my current phone) and I have never had any problems with the connection between the two. But earlier I noticed that my phone is using the 4G instead of my WiFi, so I switched the WiFi on my phone on, and my phone said it could not connect to the network due to 'incorrect password'. So I went to my WiFi router, which was working fine, and put in the router password to my iPhone, and it still came up as incorrect (it is definitely correct, I use the password for TV apps, my laptop in the past and also my phone in the past too). I then looked online for solutions, and reset my network settings and put my router password in my phone again and the same thing happened, it came up as incorrect password again. So I don't know what to do. My laptop and TV work off my Wifi and all are connecting absolutely fine. Nothing has changed, had the same Sky WiFi for years, and as I say my phone is over a year old. So this has just happened as I took my phone off airplane mode this AM. Any suggestions most welcome, I have low data and can't afford more and really need to be able to use my home WiFi for my phone, especially right now.

Cloning MAC HD or MAC HD Data?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:42 PM PDT

i'm getting ready for my first venture in to performing surgery on my mid-2012 MPB running Catalina because i can't afford a new computer, this seems like a pretty cheap & simple process and this thing is a workhorse.

i don't need it for much but to house my music files, pics and to run some basic programs but i noticed that my speed/response is starting to greatly diminish. that's when i decided to upgrade to a SSD TB drive and max out the RAM to 16gb (as well as throw in a new battery while i have it cracked open). all the tutorials i have watched have shown me how to format wipe the new SSD, then restart in recovery mode and copy/clone over the HD to the SSD. after that i would check to see if my data is on the new drive and then proceed with the hardware install.

that said, i was looking at my Disk Utilities and noticed that i have two HD listed, Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data...? none of the tutorials have made mention of this and now i'm a little worried on which one i should clone. it APPEARS like the "data" drive actually houses my info but if that is the case then what is the "other HD" listed? should i go ahead and just clone the "data" HD listed?

BONUS QUESTION: i also noticed that my current HD is formatted as "APFS (Encrypted)". none of the tutorials i watch or read mention this format. is this going to be a problem when i format and clone the SSD?

    thanks in advance.

Right fan on full blast after repasting 2017 15"

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:22 PM PDT

I was bored and decided to repaste my 2017 15" Macbook pro. Went fine, insane amount of screws, and I compared with the iFixit video when I was reassembling...but ever since I booted it up after that, the right side fan has been locked at full blast. Left side is fine, temperatures are all fine, and showing signal, and the macbook performs normally. Where should I start looking to fix the fan issue?

    Docking station for MacBook pro

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:17 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I have a MacBook pro 2018 model with the touchbar. I'm currently in the market looking for a good docking station to connect two external monitors and also connect my iPhone test device. With my current setup all 4 Usb-C ports are taken and I'm now looking to find a docking station to free up one or two of those ports. Any suggestions? Thanks much appreciated.

Connecting to the internet via USB tether, trying to not use the hotspot (not on internet plan) help me find a solution please.

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 08:03 PM PDT

I have a windows computer that isn't connected to the internet, I want to connect this computer to the internet, but I want it to have internet access through my phone, the only problem is all the tutorials l've seen on the internet involving the Tether sharing internet require me to use the hotspot (which completely removes the need for the tether other than direct connection) I am looking for a solution that makes it so that my computer has internet and I don't have to ask my parents to regrow an arm and a leg just to sell for a hotspot.

iMac Wi-Fi keeps turning itself off and on

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 01:45 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I've just had an incredibly weird thing happen to my iMac. This has never happened before so I'm not really sure how to fix it!

Essentially I was just using my iMac as I do every day, when all of a sudden my Wi-Fi disconnected. I thought my router had just lost connection or something, but both my MacBook and iPhone remained connected. So I checked the Network in System Preferences. The entire box was blank with nothing in it. No wifi, ethernet options. Just a totally blank window. This remained blank for a good couple minutes. Shortly after it reconnected to the internet and everything within the Window reappeared. I left it open to monitor and it just seems to be turning the WiFi off and on randomly. Sometimes to the point where I can't even turn it off/on myself as it doesn't accept my input. I've restarted it, updated it to the latest version of Catalina and neither of those two things have fixed it. I've also tried running the wireless diagnostics tool but it said my internet is totally fine.

I'm certain it isn't an issue with my router as both my MacBook and iPhone have had zero connectivity issues when connecting to the internet (they're literally positioned right next to the iMac)

I've tried googling it but I can't seem to find anyone with a similar issue . Has anyone ever had a similar experience with this? Or alternatively, does anyone know a way in which I can fix this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What's with my suddenly amazing battery life?

    Posted: 07 Apr 2020 03:50 PM PDT

It's a 6 year old MacBook Pro (but the battery is almost two (old one got replaced). The battery was reporting 89% of its capacity left. A few days ago the battery got down to 0% (a stuck sync was draining it really quickly) so I had to do a 0 to 100% charge. Now the battery's reporting it has 95 to 96% of its capacity and the MacBook is estimating 12 hours of battery life (that's double what it was estimating before). I probably won't get 12 hours, but still the battery life estimates are like when it was new. Did Catalina 10.15.4 do something to battery usage?

Then again, I'm not sure how long it actually lasts, I'm just going on the estimates it gives
