Wired EarPods one ear not working (it's not wax) any wiring fix? Posted: 15 Apr 2020 10:15 PM PDT Almost all videos on youtube are Indian guys and I can't understand them, sorry. The other videos I can understand are saying to clean the wax. I did that, there's no wax. It's 100% a wiring issue. Are there any credible wiring videos that clearly explain how to fix? $40 CAD for a new pair is just ridiculous. [link] [comments] |
Is MacBook Pro 2013 to MacBook Air 2020 a worthwhile upgrade? Posted: 15 Apr 2020 05:54 AM PDT Hi, I'm not the most literate when it comes to specs, and I'm hoping someone here can help parse this for me in a clear way. I bought a MacBook Pro in 2013 (with the RAM upgraded to 16 GB). It still works well enough, but as and when new hardware is released I usually take a look to assess whether an upgrade is worthwhile. Here's what I have right now:
And here's a 16 GB RAM configuration of the new Air:
How significant a step up is that? I know the SSD is larger, and will be faster than the Flash HD. I can see that the RAM is more than twice as fast, but how will that translate to performance? And unless I'm misunderstanding how CPU specs work (which is very possible), there's no upgrade there. I know I'm comparing a Pro to an Air, but after 7 years I thought there would be a noticeable difference. TIA for any clarity you can offer. [link] [comments] |
Hard disk visible in disk utility but not startup disk Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:28 PM PDT I've been attempting to install OSX 10.6.3 after replacing the hard drive of a MacBook Core Duo. The hard drive appears in the disk utility, which says that it is bootable. However the drive does not appear in the startup disk utility. I've tried repairing it through disk utility, but it did nothing. What can I do! [link] [comments] |

Icloud and freeing up space question Posted: 15 Apr 2020 10:46 PM PDT Hi all! I recently tried to download Mojoave and an alert popped up saying that I don't have enough space. So I went to iCloud and purchashed the 2TB plan. iCloud says I have 1.61TB remaining. I went back to download Mojave, but it still said I don't have enough space. My disk space is full, but everything on my disk seems to be on my iCloud. Is there anyway I can delete things off my computer, but keep them on iCloud? I haven't been able to find a way to do that yet. But even so, is there a way I can resolve this without having to delete anything? Thanks much! [link] [comments] |
iPhone Reminders Not Displaying Notifications? Posted: 15 Apr 2020 10:20 PM PDT iPhone X on iOS 13: Pretty simple issue, when I set reminders they no longer display red pop-up notifications on the app or stick to my lock screen anymore. When I wake up, all reminders for the day will show on my lock screen as a notification, but as soon as I unlock the phone I never see them again. In the past they would either stick to my lock screen and/or display a red pop-up notification on the Reminders app. Now neither of these things happen and I'm forgetting the things I'm supposed to be reminding myself about. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |

Getting VGA input from a USB-C hub Posted: 15 Apr 2020 09:42 PM PDT I'm trying to hook up my monitor to my macbook air via vga with a usb-c hub. When I connect the vga cable to the hub connected to my mac, the laptops screen goes blank briefly as if it were connecting to the display, but nothing actually happens on my external display. When I switch to the vga input on the external display manually rather than using auto detect input, it says that there is no signal coming from my computer, and to press any key on the keyboard and mouse to wake up (which doesn't work, of course). This is with a brand new usb-c hub, which seems to work for the other i/o on the hub, and a brand new vga cable, which I believe works, the display works, and the macbook air is brand new. This gives me hope that this is a software issue, rather than a hardware issue (although possible), since I expect it isn't too hard to make vga components since they've only been making them for like 40 years straight now... although maybe I'm just wishful I won't have to deal with the headache of systematically replacing this hardware piece by piece to uncover any defective components. Plus this is like the only hub that has the very simple combination of i/o that I need: either VGA or DVI, ethernet, and could charge the laptop. Pretty standard i/o imo, but it blew my mind how much those three specifications whittled down the hubs available on the internet, so I really hope this hub works out as I don't think there is another one I could try... Does anyone use usb-c and vga and could share any thoughts? Should it just work out of the box or do I need to do something to deliver output over analog vga from a usb-c hub? [link] [comments] |
What if any Macs take PC2-5300 RAM? Posted: 15 Apr 2020 12:52 PM PDT I was just cleaning out my office and almost threw away some RAM by accident. I think I bought the wrong type on Amazon a couple years ago. It's labeled as "Apple Memory Module 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 PC2-5300 2x1GB SO-DIMMS". Anyway... this is probably the wrong place but if by some chance there's someone on here who could use it, I will send it to you for the cost of postage, which would probably be a $8 flat rate envelope. Posted: 15 Apr 2020 05:37 PM PDT I previously had a podcast linked with my Apple ID. I've since deleted the Podcast but I still get Podcast emails. Is there a way to stop this? Can I delete the Podcast portion of my account? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Apr 2020 05:18 PM PDT I have a MacBook Air 13' 2019 version Catalina (10.15.4) and I just noticed this issue (don't know if that's meant to happen or not) Normally, on a Windows laptop, when you plug your device to your computer, it shows your device and inside, you can see the photos and you can easily transfer it to a folder or somewhere. I went to Bootcamp because I got 1 External Drive that's Mac-wise and 1 that's Windows-wise. I just noticed that when you plug it in, it doesn't show up. I removed the driver, rebooted my phone, Bootcamp and issue still there. Is this meant to happen so I only do that when I'm on MacOS? I searched everywhere (unless I forgot how to search) including the Apple Support community and nothing mentions it. What can I do? [link] [comments] |
Apple Pencil Issues: Sporadic Squiggly Lines Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:57 PM PDT When writing with the Apple Pencil (1st gen) on my iPad Pro 10.5" (2017), I encounter this weird issue where it seems to glitch. When writing, the strokes will all the sudden become choppy, wavy, or somewhat broken. It will also sometimes miss strokes. When this happens, it makes handwriting unreadable and is quite annoying. It seems to happen randomly, and I cannot fix it when it happens. It seems to come and go as it pleases. It used to not be so bad/often, but now it happens every few minutes and during times when I need it most. Does anyone know how to fix this? Please keep in mind, the only app I pretty much use with the Pencil is Notability. Although I have used the pen for other activities outside of that app and have noticed the Pencil acting weird, I do not use it enough in other apps to know if there's an actual difference. Notability has a built in palm detection setting that is enabled, but seeing as it works great for a minute then becomes completely unusable the next, I doubt it is the app setting. Also, the glitch sometimes has a correlation to whatever surface the iPad is currently laying on. For instance, it is more likely to glitch when laying on a glass table than on a wooden table. This is my second Apple Pencil with the same iPad. I remember the iPad glitching a little with the first Apple Pencil, but it is definitely moreso with the current Pencil. I have considered it being an issue with the Bluetooth, but I have not had any issues with other Bluetooth devices (speakers, computers, etcetera). In addition, I have tried charging the Pencil, reconnecting with the iPad, restarting the iPad, and tightening/changing the nib on the end of the Pencil. Nothing seems to help. Any suggestions are helpful. I use the Pencil quite a lot and have been irritated with this issue for quite a while. For reference, here is a photo of what I mean. The top line has the glitchy line, the bottom has the normal line. TL;DR: Apple Pencil writing squiggly lines, suggestions on fixing? [link] [comments] |
Will Apple cover a warranty repair if there's other unrelated damage?? Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:27 PM PDT So a while ago I noticed that there has been a discolored orange spot on my screen, I have the Macbook Pro 13 in. I looked this up and it's a pretty widespread defect, and it's covered under warranty since it's clearly a manufacturing defect. However, this is where my problem arises: about a year ago I cracked a hole in the plastic that surrounds the bottom of the screen. It's nothing serious, and it's nowhere near the discolored part of the screen, and I know that the orange discoloration in the screen is not related to the damage that I made. However, in order to fix the discolored spot, Apple would have to replace the entire screen, including where the damage that I made is. I'm afraid that Apple won't repair the manufacturing defect on my screen under warranty because of the damage I incurred. Does anyone have any answers for me? I'm sorry if this seems confusing, feel free to comment any questions and I will answer for clarification. EDIT: I added a picture of the screen if that helps for any clarification. In the bottom left corner you can see the orange discoloration and the crack that I made. [link] [comments] |
How to definitively tell model of iPad? Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:16 PM PDT I ordered a used iPad online the other day, and it was claimed to be a 6th generation iPad. However, I suspect that it has been refurbished at some point, which isn't my issue with it, but I noticed that the serial number on the back of the iPad is different than the serial number displayed in settings. I checked the serial number on the back on apple's website and it says it is a 6th gen model. The model listed in settings says 6th gen as well. However when I check the serial number in settings on apples website, it comes up as a 4th gen iPad. How can I tell which one is correct? [link] [comments] |
Apple Watch and iPhone unlinking problem? Posted: 15 Apr 2020 08:13 PM PDT As the title says I'm having a problem where I have deactivated/disconnected my old apple watch from icloud (shows offline) as it died on me, but I keep getting a notification saying that I need to update the watch's software. I tried to do so, seeing if maybe it would bypass it and stop the notification and it did not do anything. How to i get this to stop? I went online and followed what I thought were the steps to disconnect the watch from everything, but apparently I didn't. Help? Please and thank you by the way. [link] [comments] |

Help Choosing an Apple Product for Our Desktop Setup Posted: 15 Apr 2020 07:51 PM PDT Hello great people of AppleHelp, My SO and I are redesigning our Office space. We are upgrading our desk setup as well as bringing a Peloton Tread into the mix. Due to the space concerns for our office, we are upgrading from our old IKEA desk to an ergonofis live-edge walnut moveable desk. We desperately need help deciding which computer set-up to choose. Our inspiration hails from this YouTubers desk-setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvJ0pwZxxQc&feature=youtu.be From this setup, we would love to use the dual curved screens sitting on-top of one another with a vertical stand and will most likely doll it up with many of the features that Canoopsy uses. We do like the mobile aspect of having a MacBook Pro, but are not entirely sure of whether or not to choose that option or a Mac Mini to reduce the price. We will be going with refurbed devices for any of our choices, except the Mac Mini as that option is not currently available. However, the appeal of an all-in-one machine such as the iMac Pro that we currently work with, albeit an older machine, is not lost to us. The options we have narrowed it down to for the machine are spec'd as follows: A.) 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 with Retina display- Space Gray Touch Bar with integrated Touch ID sensor 13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1600 native resolution at 227 pixels per inch 16GB of 2133MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory 1TB SSD 720p FaceTime HD camera Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 B.) Mac mini 3.2GHz 6‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz) 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 Intel UHD Graphics 630 1TB SSD storage Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet using RJ-45 connector) Accessory Kit C.) 27-inch iMac Pro 3.2GHz 8-core Intel Xeon W with Retina 5K display 27-inch (diagonal) Retina 5K display; 5120-by-2880 resolution with support for one billion colors 32GB of 2666MHz DDR4 ECC memory 1TB SSD storage1 1080p FaceTime HD camera Radeon Pro Vega 56 graphics processor with 8GB of HBM2 memory Mobility: obviously the MacBook Pro wins out. I do not need this option as I have the last gen of the iPad Pro and absolutely love it's versatility, however, my SO does not have a mobile machine to use for work if he ever moves to needing to work from home. If we went with this option, he could relocate to a cafe, bring with on trips, etc. He does not currently have the need to do this, but you never know what the future brings. Funnily enough, we have had many iPads in the past and my SO was apprehensive about introducing this unit to the home, however the Pencil and keyboard are absolute game changers in terms of mobility and usability. Former iPads of ours were quickly sold off or regifted, but the iPad Pro is here to stay. I say this because i believe that my SO may discover new needs for a mobile machine that he doesn't currently see due to our current setup. Concerns: The MacBook Pro is the least future-proof machine on this list. We feel like the price is purely for the mobility and will be left needing a new computer within the next 2-3 years. Our current beast has been with us for 6 or 7 years and will be sold easily. Pricing: Of all the units, the Mac mini with the display set-up is the cheapest. If we compare each of the units with a monitor (49" LG Curved added to mini and MacBook), Magic Mouse and keyboard to the mini and MacBook and trackpad to all, the Mac mini asserts itself as the most economic option at $3430. The iMac is still the most expensive at $4400 and the MacBook Pro is slightly under that at $4020. We still have the ability to add a second monitor above the Mac mini and the MacBook Pro while maintaining our aesthetic. This makes the MacBook Pro only $600 higher than the iMac and the Mac mini is still the winner, coming only $30 higher than the iMac. Usage: Neither one of us use our computers to a full extent, however I do usage the Adobe Creative Cloud as well as music writing and recording software. I would like to get a nice microphone setup and learn video editing within the next year. He surfs the web and sometimes edits word documents. We know that we are looking at way too much computer for our intent. We just really like the ability to grow more. What we are leaning toward: Most likely the MacBook Pro with the dual monitor setup. Though it is the most expensive, we want to be sure that SO can eventually work wherever he wants. I've learned during this pandemic how small our home is having to work from here 24/7, and I fear that he will eventually need to break free for a coffee break or move to a restaurant with a patio every once in a while. What we've learned in the past: Our first setup was a MacBook with a Cinema Display 8 years ago. We didn't use the MacBook. Ever. We moved to the iMac and added an iPad about 6-7 years ago. As stated before, the iPad never used. We still have the iMac and now have my iPad Pro. So please, help us figure out what we are doing here. Muchos gracias! [link] [comments] |
Loud fan and occasional screen blackout with Macbook Air (2011) Posted: 15 Apr 2020 07:51 PM PDT This Macbook functions perfectly except, for some reason, the fan noise is really loud. Reset the PRAM once to no effect. It went away later and then came back. Solution? Any real danger to this? The same computer also has a screen which occasionally goes black for no reason. The key caps sometimes light up and sometimes do not. Solutions to either or both? Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Cannot connect to apple support via chat Posted: 15 Apr 2020 04:00 PM PDT I can't for the life of me find a means of chatting with anyone from apple support online. I did so about 2 weeks ago but can't seem to locate any features for it now. I had sent my phone in previously to be repaired and it's at day 6 and still in the "inspecting your device to diagnose it" stage. I get that things are weird right now so I'm not freaking out about it taking longer but I'm really annoyed at how it's handled so far. The time frame when I sent it in, and even now, says 5 days to repair it but it's on day 6 and in inspection so my next move is talking to apple to try and get an updated time to at least know generally what to expect, or if something is wrong with the phone beyond what I originally thought, except I can't because I can't find chat anywhere (spent an hour on the apple site and google trying to figure wth is going on) and I can't call their support line because... they have my phone... It's really weird to me that even if they've entered a state where they are making it harder to contact chat because they are busy, that they wouldn't extend some kind of chat ability to people who they specifically know don't have their phones because apple is in possession of them...?
