My findings about the crackling noise on my AirPods Pro

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 12:37 AM PDT

As many of us are experiencing, the AirPods Pro start making a sort of crackling noise when we talk, step or touch the AirPod. While we all describe it in a different way, the common statement is that it's extremely annoying and that this shouldn't happen to a €300 piece of technology made by Apple. Come on!

Here's what I found so far about the issue in case it helps anyone.

1 This is a hardware issue

I got in contact with Apple Support and they guided me to try to fix the issue by unpairing and resetting the settings of both the AirPods Pro and the iPhone. This sadly didn't work. However, many users say that this is fixing their issue, but I'll explain why this is actually not true in the fourth point.

2 The noise is only present when "Noise Control" is activated

With either the "Noise Cancellation" or "Transparency" modes on, the noise starts, but it doesn't when Noise Control is turned off. This highlights that the issue is probably related to the noise cancellation hardware.

3 The "Ear Tip Fit" test always fails in the affected AirPod Pro

No matter if you use different ear tip sizes, the test always fails in the AirPod Pro that has the crackling noise. This might indicate, once more, that it's a hardware issue, since there is something preventing the test to be successful.

4 Resetting the settings is a false fix

What resetting the settings of the AirPods Pro does is simply disabling the Noise Control option. Therefore many users think that doing this is fixing the issue, when it's simply turning the Noise Control off.

5 Apple are aware of this issue

From what I have read here and seen on YouTube, this is issue is well known by both the community and Apple. Furthermore, the instructions given by their support team were clearly rehearsed, so it's not the first time that this happens.

    6 Conclusion

While we wait for the Apple Stores to open (at least in Europe), the AirPods Pro are still functional without the crackling noise if the Noise Control feature is disabled. To do this just go to your AirPods Pro settings and select "Off" in the "Noise Control" section.

Have you actually replaced your computer with the iPad Pro?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:43 AM PDT

If you have, what finally made you do so?

I haven't yet, and I don't know if I ever will. But when I was looking at the things that were holding me back, many of them have been addressed. iOS now has a proper file manager. iPadOS supports fast app switching and split views. But it's still lacking some applications I need. But it's interesting to see how far things have come. The limitations that exist for me are not insurmountable.
