.MKV Thumbnails on Catalina - QLVideo now works! Posted: 29 Feb 2020 02:37 PM PST I don't know if anyone has posted this, apologies if this is a duplicate. The QLVideo plugin to get .mkv thumbnails has been updated from February 2019's High Sierra/Mojave version 1.92 to version 1.93 that is compatible with 10.15.x Catalina. I installed it on my Catalina 10.15.3, rebooted and all .mkv files now have thumbnails! See here: https://github.com/Marginal/QLVideo/releases/tag/rel-193 [link] [comments]
MBPr 2015 Stuck booting to Grub after deleting Linux partition. Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:35 AM PST Tonight I deleted a Ubuntu partition off my MacBooks drive. It was my only partition and only consumed ~8gb of the 500gb NVMe factory drive installed on it. Deleting went fine, OSX continued to work without any issue. I turned off my MacBook a few hours later and when I attempted to turn it back on it booted to a grub screen I have never previously seen. It basically said trying to find Ubuntu partition, nothing found so too bad you are stuck here. When I first installed Ubuntu, the boot loader took over my Mac and I had to option boot every time to select OSX instead of it auto booting to Ubuntu. Not the biggest deal, but definitely seemed unusual compared to previous dual boot and Ubuntu experiences. For no apparaent reason, this just resolved itself and became a non-issue after a week or two. Whenever I booted, it went to Mac as usual unless I option booted and selected Ubuntu. After successfully cracking the fire tab which was my reason for using Ubuntu, I decided to delete the partition since it was taking up space I no longer needed. I have a new RasPI for Ubuntu that works perfectly so the MacBook partition was redundant. About two months ago I decided to crack my Fire Tablet so I could use my home security cameras app on this tablet mounted by my front door. My genius landlord never installed a peep hole so this was my only way of seeing who was at my door when hearing a knock. I don't live in a particularly safe neighborhood so this was a necessary project after what happened here recently. I booted to recovery mode and verified my disks which showed no issue. Still no change in booting result. https://i.imgur.com/s6eGKVN.jpg For some reason, what seems to be my main data partition "disk0s2" will not mount in disk util. I verified the parent drive and there are zero issues. Verified and attempted repair on anything it would allow. No issues. I attempted to reinstall the OS which should preserve data but after agreeing to ToS it asks me to select a drive and no option is visible as shown here: https://imgur.com/gallery/VzFmQfS I'm really at a loss as to what I should do here. I have backups but there are some files from the past two days I really cannot afford to lose. I think an NVMe adapter would be able to recover since the drive is not encrypted but I would like to avoid opening the computer up if it can be avoided. I fried my last MacBook changing the ram from static shock so I'm terrified of that happening again. If anyone has any idea what to do I would really appreciate it. [link] [comments]

Help!! I think I messed up and need assistance Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:49 PM PST I'm trying to prepare my 13" 2014 MacBook Pro for sale and think I messed up. It's running Catalina and I ran disk utility to delete the two partitions, after which I rebooted and tried to reinstall macOS. Apparently there is no recovery partition, so it's in an endless cycle of launching disk utility and then not finding a disk volume upon which to install the OS. I'm somewhat savvy with this sort of stuff, but apparently I did something wrong. Any help is much appreciated, I am hoping to sell this tomorrow and I'm not sure what to do. Thank you!! Can’t boot Catalina, safe mode does not work. Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:04 PM PST I'll try to be brief. MBP late 2013 500gb SSD. After removing bootcamp the Disk was showing 500gb capacity but only 380gb usable. So I started messing up with disk utility and terminal. My disk had 4 partitions macintosh HD and DA, and then 2 small partitions unnamed. I deleted on with terminal and now it's showing -130mb! My mac does not go past login screen (bar is full but nothing happens) and I can't seem to load in safe mode. I press shift screen but it is the same as when I normally boot. I tried recovery mode but I don't really have access to another computer. When I open Disk utility and click "partition", it crashes. I'd appreciate help as I in 6 years of owning this laptop, this never happened to me and I am hopeless. [link] [comments]
[Question] TouchID from iOS Devices Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:02 PM PST Hi, I am using my Mac with Sidecar on iPad Air and I have an external display. So I am quite far from Macbook's touchID sensor. Aren't there any solutions like when using Sidecar, use iPad's home button or iPhone's which is available next to my hand? [link] [comments]

From bad to worse: internet recovery is a black screen and not working! Posted: 29 Feb 2020 11:25 AM PST First, specs since this is a bit of an unusual situation. I got this computer from work as they are upgrading their systems: Mid-2012 MAC PRO (desktop, not MacBook) 12 core Intel Xeon processor 2.66ghz 64GB RAM 500GB SSD ATI Radeon HD 5780 So this whole tragedy started when I decided to upgrade from El Capitan to High Sierra. I then tried to install Windows on a new second hard drive following a guide using a VM to install the files. When I went to start up the startup manager (hold option on startup), it is just a black screen and I have to restart the computer. I tried: Resetting VRAM/SMC Using a wired Mac keyboard Setting the boot order from the startup disk option in system preferences (that would then boot directly to black screen, I has to VRAM reset to fix that and boot back to the macOS) I have been at this for three days: there's not much info out there for an older system like this. I decided to wipe the OS drive and reinstall the OS. I followed Apple's documentation https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 to reinstall via recovery mode. (I tried the combination to recovery from the OS that came with the system, but good old black screen would happen, so I had no choice but to use CMD+R) I got the AFTS error when reinstalling high Sierra, so I tried to boot via internet recovery mode. As with the startup manager, it's a black screen. The only boot mode that works is the regular recovery mode, which doesn't allow me to reformat the drive to anything other than an AFTS based drive. I am at a complete loss here and left with a giant silver metal brick. I don't have any disks or installers since this was given to me. [link] [comments]
Keyboard shortcuts and automator quick actions question Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:01 AM PST I have two questions! How do I make a keyboard shortcut to move a file to a undesignated folder?
How can I make a quick action to convert a a file into a pdf AND have that pdf automatically reduce its size?
Is any of this possible? I don't have a computer background but I know about youtube and can follow basic instructions so...I could do it if you dumb it down. I know Alfred powerpack can handle such things on its workflow but I would really like to see if I can't accomplish this on the naive OS. [link] [comments]
2012 Mac book update issues (mountain lion - El capitan - ????) Posted: 29 Feb 2020 09:50 AM PST Edit: now booted into Catalina, could not get an install usb made locally to behave. So i ended up trying Sierra on a whim (should have tried it earlier) and was able to update from there. Unfortunately don't own any other mac products go pull an installer off of. What i am going to do is make a install media on a usb now that i have it running to save time in the future. Thanks for the advice so far! Hello! I recently had a macbook pro (mid 2012 101ll/a) given to me as it had some issues and the previous owner did not want it any more (upgraded). Not personally used to tinkering with macs so decided to give it a go for the fun of it. My current woe is trying to go from mountain lion to el capitan as a jump point to either high sierra or Catalina. During the upgrade using the apple installer off the website, it reboots then throws a wall of text/ error codes, then reboots into a boot cycle with the same wall of text. What I have done so far: I have resolved most of the hardware issues (RAM re-seat, still getting a USB power draw error) Installed a Kingston 128 GB SSD that I had leftover from another project. formatted SSD using the mac format (jounaled mode) installed mountain lion off the internet (did not clone old drive) attempted El Capitan update round one, got error rebooted into recovery, tried os reinstall (mountain lion) failed formatted ssd again, reinstalled OSX (mountain lion) attempted El Capitan update round two, got error (had to try......) Now on reddit seeking advice on what to do next The upgrade is more or less necessary as I would want office365 [link] [comments]
Big (20gb) other storage after deleting all photos Posted: 29 Feb 2020 03:48 AM PST Yesterday I deleted all my photos after disconnecting from iCloud photos to remove local copies. I removed them firstly from my photos app and after that from recently deleted folder in photos app. After that when macOS updated left storage I saw around 20gb other storage. Earlier I didn't have it so big. What can I do or should I just let macOS time to index everything? [link] [comments]

Catalina - Finder keeps being selected Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:48 AM PST No matter what app I'm working in, every minute or two the finder is brought to the front. I have no idea why it keeps doing this. Anybody know what's going on here? [link] [comments]

Adding multiple keywords to photos Posted: 29 Feb 2020 07:02 AM PST I am currently using Apple Photos for organizing my photos. I know how to add keywords, but I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or if photos is just built this way. After I've entered a keyword and press "," or "ENTER" I need to use my mouse to click the add keyword box again before I can type my next keyword. This makes adding keywords frustrating. Tried to google the problem with no luck. Anyone noticed this or am I the only one? :) [link] [comments] |
