Any students using an iPad as their main device for University instead of a laptop?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:56 PM PST

I'm about to start my degree in primary school teaching and I'm currently hunting around for a device I can take with me to my classes and lectures. As I have a Windows desktop at home that I'll always prefer to use, I'm just looking for something portable and light that I can record notes with, write essays and look over uni content. The likelihood of using whatever I purchase outside of uni is low.

I've seen online that a lot of students have replaced their laptop with an iPad for their classes instead and after some research, I can say it really appeals to me; the battery life, how lightweight and portable it is, and in particular, the ability to be able to switch between hand-written notes and typing with a smart keyboard and Apple Pencil. I love the idea of being able to spice up my hand-written notes with highlighting, different colours easily with the click of a few buttons.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has opted out of using a laptop in favour of using an iPad as their only device for University; How did it go for you?

What makes you use your iPad instead of a laptop?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 07:36 AM PST

I have a iPhone XS Max, iPad Pro 10.5 and t430 and honestly all I use is my phone. Granted my home WiFi is bad so I mostly use data but regardless, when I had WiFi all I did was web browse and watch relic on the bigger screen. A task I could accomplish just as well on my laptop.

10.5” (iPad Air) or 11” (iPad Pro)

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 07:20 PM PST

I am a solo attorney. Presently, I use a 1st generation 16gb iPad Air for annotating PDFs/docs, reading news, legal research, emails, some MS Word writing and doc editing, occasionally watching videos, some legal research, and browsing the web. I use it with a Logitech K380 keyboard if I am sitting at a flat surface.

As iPad OS now allows mouse use, I am interested in upgrading (I've also noticed some lagging; it runs the latest version of iOS 12), and regardless of which the above referenced models, there's a .8"-1.3" increase in screen size with essentially the same size/footprint.

Anyhow, was wondering if anyone has thoughts on whether the 10.5" iPad Air or 11" iPad Pro makes the most sense? Have also thought about just the basic iPad, but am not crazy about the A10 processor in it. Ideally, I want to buy something that would not be (completely) obsolete until 2025 or so. It appears that Apple will likely be releasing new iPad models next month.

Anyhow, curios if anyone has insight here. I try to be as economical and efficient as possible, but also not a luddite when it comes to new technology.

iPad Pro getting LTE without sim inserted?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:08 PM PST

So I purchased a used iPad Pro 10.5 and got it shipped to me. One weird thing I see is that the iPad still shows LTE with a couple of bars in the top right corner of the display without any sim inserted. I just opened the sim tray and made sure there's no sim card in there, so I don't know how it's still getting the network. Looking on Apple's website, I see that this model supports embedded sim and nano sim but I don't know how they are different.

Does anyone know why this is the case?

App that lets you handwrite markdown

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 12:50 PM PST

Pretty much what the title says: I want to use my iPad and Pencil to take notes while reading/studying, and export those notes as markdown for use with a static site generator (to create website content) Anyone know of any apps that do this? Google is failing me - a gazillion note taking apps but struggling to find this specific feature.

Alternatively, if someone has a Pencil-friendly interface for editing on GitHub . . .

    OneNote for iPad pro

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 04:29 AM PST

I've been using OneNote on my iPad pro 11" which I bought almost a month ago for taking notes during classes. I've noticed that the app crashes every 30-45 minutes and also drains battery, 100 to 50% in 3 hours heating up the device. Am I the only one with the problem? Any solution for it? And if anybody has used notability, did they get a better battery optimization and overall better note taking experience? TIA

    Reading app on iPad

    Posted: 23 Feb 2020 12:36 AM PST

Hey guys! I know it may be a strange question but...

My grandma used to have an iPad 1, the oldest one. Nothing could be installed on it so she just used the built-in apps to read news and to read books. (we are from Bulgaria, there is a website here where one can read Bulgarian books for free)

So she just downloaded them in .epub format and the iPad reader used to open them automatically so it was really easy for her (she isn't very into technologies)

The problem is, the iPad 1 became too slow and laggy and the battery started to drain very quickly and it was practically unusable, so my uncle bought her a new tablet

But it is an Android tablet and I can't seem to find her a reader app that is as simple as the iPad one. Every app wants the books to be searched in the file manager and I don't think she will quite catch it if I try to explain to her how to do it.

Is there any reader app similar to the iPad one that you know? Or perhaps there is a way to use the iOS reader also on Android? Thank you in advance!

Anyone else with iPad Pro 2017 experiencing lag?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 10:02 PM PST

I recently purchased an iPad (few months ago) and it's been lagging like crazy as of last week. Keeps freezing and crashing whenever I use it. My classmate, who purchased her iPad the same week as I did (same model but (512GB) is experiencing the same problem.

I have the 256GB model with over 200GB free. I only use it with notability and procreate. That's it.

Whenever I use notability now it will crash and freeze. Especially if I try recording while writing, but even without it will still crash. When I use procreate and try to import an image it will also crash. My classmate gets the same issue while using Good Notes

What. The. Fuck. This is my first bad experience with Apple products and I am LIVID.

Edit: forcing a restart (home + power) makes it better.... for a few hours before it starts lagging again

When iPad locks to Authentication Required, will I be able to resume work after unlocking it or will it clear all apps in the process?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2020 06:39 PM PST

My friend gave me her old iPad and I tried so hard to get his old account out but I've been stuck with "Activation Lock". And I can't contact her as she went camping for a week. So I decided to just wait for her. I wanted to buy her a gift for her birthday which she really wants and I want it to be a surprise.

My question is, can I go back to what I was doing after I let her type in her account? Will she see what I want to buy for her or will it all get cleared in the process?
