    Best app(s) for research workflow

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:14 AM PST

    Hey there,

I have worked myself through a billion of youtube videos regarding different note and annotation apps. I have read countless "best app for ..." and "this is why I use ... for ..." blog posts. And guess what: I still cannot figure out what the best choice of app(s) is out there for me and my kind of workflow.

So I do ask for your kindness and helpfullness, even tho this question has been asked in different ways a million times.

I will start a new research project (Masters level in a scientific research master) and I got my hands on a 12.9 IPad Pro with Pencil and want to use this loveley device to support myself during this time. My other working machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad (obviously with Windows).

Here is what I have to do and what I want to archieve:

    • Work myself through a lot of PDFs (mostly on my IPad)
      • Read them
      • Highlight stuff
      • Annotate things
      • Extract, sort and gather excerpt of many PDFs in one place
    • Use the extracted excerpts when I draft and write my paper (mostly on my Lenovo)
      • Look up stuff that I highlighted and annotated when my excerpts are not enough

My problem are the two bold parts. I know there is stuff like LiquidText and Flexcil. I also know GoodNotes5, Notabillity and OneNote. But I cannot find a way to connect those in the way I want it to happen.

My dream would be the following scenario:
I read and annotate + highlight many PDFs. During the process, if I find "key" information, I want to cut that part out (or copy / drag and drop it) and put it in my "notes" in the place where that part belongs, e.g. "Interesting theories" or "Quantitative models" or "Theoretical background for the research question". And then I want that to either be linked back to the PDF (like LiquidText does it but LiquidText notes live in LiquidText and I cannot use them anywhere else) or at least have a reference (like the filename where the copied part comes from) added to the excerpt. Later on I will go through my notes, also containing the excerpts, and make more notes there, annotate in the notes and add other stuff to build up an "information ecosystem" which then is used when I draft and write my paper.

    The main problems are:

    • Getting parts out of PDFs into notes and have them carry a reference where they come from in an easy way
    • Use all of that on two different systems (IPad and my Lenovo)
      • Im fine with only using my IPad for PDF annotation and highlighting but the extracted notes have to live somewhere where I can also use them with my Lenovo

This story is longer than I want it to be but I feel kinda silly, that I cannot work that problem out on my own.

Thanks to anybody that tries to help! Have a nice day <3

    Apps post stroke

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 06:03 AM PST

Someone in my family is less than a year out recovering from a mild stoke, I picked her up an iPad today and was thinking of loading it with some brain stimulation, any ideas for some games/apps to load on that would help with this type of focus.

Every comment is much appreciated. Hoping to have this complete by the end of January.

Two videos playing at the same time?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 09:47 AM PST

I was watching CNN on my Xfinity stream app in window mode and poking around twitter and clicked a video that was muted. Two videos playing at the same time! I thought this wasn't possible?

You can reproduce this by opening any two videos on split screen as long as one of them has a mute button for video. An easy way to see this is have two safari windows in split mode and go to safari on each and open up a Twitter link on each of them that has a video. Make sure that they are both muted and then click play. Then unmute one. Unmute the other and that one stops playing. Clicking play on the stopped one will start and take over the audio. As long as one is muted, they will both play. I'm trying to find a way to get three to play now.

Just thought people might be interested in this.

ETA: I managed to get three playing at the same time.

    Bug with Multi-Tasking

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 11:26 AM PST

Hi, new to r/ipad, and hoping to learn a bunch and discuss quite a bit. I have a 10.5" iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard case running the latest version of iPadOS. It's a great business tool and I've essentially been able to replace my Macbook Pro for daily driver tasks like meetings, email, etc. I'm a Director of Marketing by trade.

My question is this: Has anyone else experienced a bug when using Side-by-Side multi-tasking where your cursor gets 'stuck' in one app no matter much you try to switch back to the secondary app? My particular use case is that I primarily use Dropbox Paper, Slack, Outlook and Chrome, with some combination of two of those on screen together throughout the day. Often if I'm typing in my DB Paper doc and switch over to reply to a message in Slack, I cannot switch back to DB Paper. The cursor appears in the DB Paper link, but if I type, it will only type in the Slack window, not the DB Paper window. I can select text in DB paper, but can't actually edit it, I can't type new text, etc.

Anybody else had an issue with this? As I'm typing it now, it seems like it's usually with Slack and DB Paper moreso than with Chrome or Outlook. Does anybody have a thought as to whether the bug would be in IpadOS, Slack app or DB Paper app based on that behavior?

    Thanks in advance!!

    Animation Apps for iPad Pro?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 02:20 PM PST

Hi! I'm a photoshop artist transferring from surface to iPad Pro. I use photoshop for animation, due to it's easy to use pen pressure and audio compatibility. With the iPad's inability to download audio files, I'm wondering if there's anyway for me to be able to still make animations to audio, or if there are any apps to support this. I'm sure I can figure out how to get my mp3 files on the iPad on its own, but are there any apps that support audio use? Thanks a bunch!

(Price is not a problem. I'm simply looking for the best animation app that is audio compatible.)

    Apple Pencil--used interchangeably?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 02:19 PM PST

    Hi!

I am planning on purchasing the "budget" iPad (2019) for the sole purpose of it being bigger. I have an iPad mini (5th gen) with the 1st gen Apple Pencil and I use it for taking notes, digital planning and streaming. However, I have found that the screen is too small and I have opted for purchasing the new iPad.

I still want to keep my iPad mini and the pencil and use on the go so I don't have to carry around the bigger iPad, so my question is, can I use my Apple Pencil interchangeably between both iPads (by connecting them via bluetooth each time or should I just buy another pencil to go with the new iPad so that each has its own?

    Case recommendations for 7th gen?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

Planning to purchase a 7th gen iPad today. Can anyone recommend a nice case that's protective but not super bulky? Something that has a screen protector would be ideal, too. Thanks in advance!

iPad Air 2019 VS iPad pro 10.5 ?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 04:15 AM PST

Hi guys, i would like to buy an iPad this year for studies and entertainment, but i hesitate between iPad air 2019 and iPad pro 10.5. I'v heard that the Pro has some screens issues (bright spot) so i don't know if it's a big deal.. I will use it for beginner drawing, videos, office(word...) and maybe games...
About the budget, i found a pro cheaper that's why i'm hesitating.
If you have any experience with them or any buy advice i'm open !

Anyway to get rid of Passwords in PDF-Files?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 02:31 AM PST

My Professor gives us her lectures via PDF, but its annoying to type in the password everytime?

Is there anyway to get rid of the password (i know the password, just dont want to type it in everytime i look something up)?

Documents does this, but only if you buy it for 55€/Year which seems a little over the top...

    Any recommendations?

    iPad Keyboard 12.9

    Posted: 16 Jan 2020 04:05 AM PST

    Hi,

I am selling an IPad smart keyboard on eBay, unopened and still in the original cellophane wrapping.

I bought 2 of them from Apple and now I am looking to sell the second one.

A question I have. I took actual photos of what I have to prove it was still unopened and in its original packaging but I noticed some other sellers use official Apple photos. Would you recommend I do the same. I thought I'd have some bids by now as on the Apple store they are selling for €189 and I am starting at just €60 with no reserve.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Software keyboard with command and fn button for ipad 10.2

    Posted: 15 Jan 2020 09:28 PM PST

So, I have recently bought a ipad 10.2, I mostly do spreadsheet editing and when I'm using google sheets on a browser, I cannot copy/paste data since there is no command key in the default software keyboard. Is there any workarounds? Is there any alternative software keyboard with at least fn and command keys?
