“Find My” is useless when it comes to AirPods. Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:40 AM PST Several weeks ago I woke up and realized I couldn't find my AirPods. I looked everywhere in my home and finally pulled up the "Find My" app to see where I last had them. It said it's last known location was right outside of my office the day before. Just as I left to go home. So I drove to work and looked everywhere outside. Couldn't find it. Checked the lost and found of a couple of businesses nearby and nobody had returned it. Did some research online and discovered that if someone were to find them and pair it with their own phone that was it. I would no longer be able to track them. So I accepted that they were gone and now belonged to someone else. And since this happened way before Christmas, I just hoped that they went to someone who worked hard, provided, was a good person and couldn't afford something nice like that for themselves. That's how I made peace with it. Fast forward to yesterday. I've been using old, cheap blutooth headphones that I already had. The pairing was terrible. Would randomly disconnect. I was miserable. For weeks now, every time I walked up to my office complex I would look around on the ground just hoping I would find my AirPods just sitting where "find my" last saw them. But yesterday while I was helping my baby daughters clean their room, I noticed something. There behind their bed lamp were my goddamn AIRPODS! They had taken my AirPods and were pretending they were a magical good luck charm. They had been at my house the entire time. Miles where "find my" had indicated they were. Never pinged even though I was close to them. Fully charged. I attached one of my leftover TILE tags to them. Hopefully that's good enough. But never rely on "find my" to locate your misplaced AirPods. It will only let you down. [link] [comments]

Opinion: Apple should make both landscape and portrait mode a necessity for all iPadOS apps. Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:03 PM PST If I was in charge of App Store curation, failure to adopt this standard should be an instant removal from the App Store. Some people prefer landscape apps, some people prefer landscape. Everyone should have the option. The amount of apps that I need (banking being a big one here) that are only in one orientation seriously annoys me as they look low quality and low effort. Feel free to change my mind. The ‘AI’ in the photos app is dumb as hell Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:23 AM PST Remember when Craig Federighi said we don't need to scan your photos to know what a mountain should look like? Maybe they should have. The search function on the Photos app may as well not exist, and the same goes for the people recognition. Google Photos recognizes nearly 450 photos of me and close to 400 photos of my friend. For the same, the iOS photos app barely recognizes 100 for each. It misses most of the blatantly obvious ones. As for search, I have literally photos of iPhones in my gallery, which Google Photos brings up when I search for 'phone', but the built in photos app doesn't. [link] [comments]

Review of AirPod Pro Foam Tip Replacements Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:22 PM PST While we suffer through the weird silicone shrink sizing issues with AirPod Pros and wait for Comply to release a premium version of replacement tips I wanted to experiment with foam tips off eBay. To baseline: I paid for these tips myself and have no affiliation with the seller. I'm an audiophile, I currently have a headphone dac/amp and own the following TripleFi IEMs, Senn 600s, ATH 6000Z, Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO 250, and Shure SE235, and Senn PXC550. I find foam tips very valuable due to noise isolation, improved bass response, and comfort. Since they're my preferred tip I try to use them on any IEM I have. I purchased these: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F274114271534 To summarize... Fit: - better seal and hold/grip in ear - softer material increases comfort - 2 part construction helps with sizing, 2 gaskets and S/M/L tips are provided. In photo left is L and right is M. - Doesn't fit perfectly in the case. Even when I really squish them down there's still a 1-2mm gap in the case lid. There are no issues charging however. As with most foam tips they compress after the first week of usage, so I expect this problem with go away... but it's not a perfect fit like the product description claims. Sound: - bass sounds better - active noise cancelling seems better due to better seal/passive cancelling - can listen on lower volumes with same result (great while near subway) Quality: - foam is cheap and has no outer coating like Comply (will collect ear wax as it's porous) - comes in 2 pieces: hard "gasket" that clips into AirPod Pro, foam tip fits over top. Many foam tips should fit over the gasket once you have them - Very hard to remove foam tip off gasket once on, they essentially get torn off. Be careful when you're experimenting with sizes. Not an issue if you're discarding an old, waxy tip though. Overall: 3/5. Foam tip usual great benefits, but these will get waxy and gross in 3-4 weeks because they're cheap foam. Since these will need to be replaced, I'll be looking for generic foam tips to make use of the gaskets in future. While this is the best we've got for now, as a foam over silicon fan, I eagerly await Comply's product. [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:22 PM PST Hello reddit! I just wanted to share a small video for Self Promotion Saturday on my tabletop RPG app that I'm making to help people manage their RPG campaigns. It's currently in alpha as I finish up features, but it will help you keep track of characters, locations, notes and campaign tools like a dice roller and soundboard. It's very much in alpha and early in development, but it's my first app and I'm very excited to share it! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/txt0524YVsI It will be available for iOS, iPadOS and MacOS probably later this year and a beta hopefully next month. Let me know if you have any questions! Posted: 04 Jan 2020 07:38 PM PST Sorry, this may be well known around here, but I just found out about Apple Research tonight, while going through my data in the Health App on my phone. It was a card towards the bottom of the summary page. I appreciate Apples privacy stance and also their commitment for research and development in health and science, I am more than happy to contribute whatever I can to those advancements. One of the best parts about it is - I get to pick and choose which study's I want to participate in and then I also get to choose what data is being collected and allow or deny certain measurements. In the past, I participated in the Heart Study and they actually detected an irregular heartbeat and sent me a special monitor! After I wore it for a few days, I sent it back in the provided envelope and they sent me back a report with all the details and their conclusions on my heart. (I'm fine! 😄). All for free! Also, I FaceTimed one of their doctors as soon as I was alerted to the notification about my irregular heartbeat. I was impressed. I get it, I'll be giving up some of my personal data, but other companies get it through other means and they use it for sinister reasons. With Apple, I have that sense of ease with voluntarily offering my data and analytics. Hell, it might even save my life or even a strangers life. I'd feel good about that! I apologize for this long post. I swear I am not getting paid by anybody for this (I wish I were on Apple's payroll! 🤑). I'm just a regular Joe (John) and a nobody with a blog. So anyway, it's up to you if you want to participate. Here's the link: [link] [comments] |
