The Catalina and 32-bit App Conundrum Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:11 PM PST While some folks are having other issues with Catalina upgrades/clean installs, I'm speaking specifically about Catalina and 32-bit App compatibility.. "Catalina broke my [insert 32-bit App here]" is a false statement. We've been warned for years from Apple about antiquated 32-bit apps and technology. Catalina had nothing to do with your 32-bit app not working, the developer is at fault. It's time to jump into those app's forums and start complaining about their incompatibility with Catalina, not the other way around. This is 2020, it's way beyond time for app and program developers to join the 21st century. Stop dumping on Catalina. RANT OVER [link] [comments]
Updating to Catalina...Concerned about my music library...please help!!! Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:36 PM PST Relatively new to Reddit so excuse me if this has been answered. I want to update my Mac to Catalina but I have put together quite the music library. It contains songs from old CDs, downloaded music from the Limewire days and music added with Apple Music. Will all this music transfer to the music app without any issues? If I lost my library I might lose my mind. Thanks!!!! [link] [comments]

I regret upgrading to Catalina. Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:15 PM PST So Im using my good old macbook air 2013, and it was running fine on Mojav. I just upgraded to Catalina, and the OS very often would hang for a second or two just navigating finder or whatever. Really should not be advertised as supported for this hardware. Big thumbs down. MBP late 2013, macOS Catalina struggles to playback 4k HEVC videos but Windows 10 Bootcamp doesn't Posted: 05 Jan 2020 07:44 PM PST My MacBook Pro really struggles to playback 4k HEVC videos. I've already tried the default QuickTime, IINA, and VLC. All of them playback the videos at about 2 fps. I know my laptop is pretty old and doesn't support hardware decoding so I wasn't that surprised. But what's weird is that on the same machine, my Windows 10 Bootcamp can play all those perfectly fine using the default video player. Is this normal? Edit: the bitrate was about 50Mb/s, fyi. Downgrade to Mojave from Catalina because of need for 32 bit apps, will TM backup restore apps? Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:25 PM PST My father in law accidentally upgrade his computer to Catalina and has 32 bit software that he can no longer use that he needs for his business. There are no backups. There are no installers for the 32 bit software. If i make a time machine backup on Catalina now, wipe the computer, install Mojave, and restore from time machine, will all the applications be restored from the time machine backup taken on the newer OS? Thanks so much! [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jan 2020 10:20 AM PST I've used Yubikey 5NFCs and 5Cs for login on a few macs, but I'd like to extend this authorization to sudo. I assume I just add the line "auth required /usr/local/lib/security/pam_yubico.so mode=challenge-response" to the pam.d file for sudo, but before I start experimenting, I was curious whether others have done this and found it to be stable on the latest version of Mojave? If so, are there any nuances relative to the Yubikey guidance provided for authorization? [link] [comments]
Why does Mac OS Folder Merging work the way it does? Posted: 06 Jan 2020 01:28 AM PST I've been getting more into the details of Mac OS and I'm wondering if apple has ever provided any explanation for this seemingly bizarre folder merging procedure (as well as the archaic window management)? How to use Auto Dark Mode without Night Shift? Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:27 PM PST Very annoying that for dark mode to be enabled, Night Shift also has to be turned on because they share the same schedule. Which is dumb, unless I'm missing something here, this is another case of Apple half-assing their iOS features port to the Mac. [link] [comments]
Help! Airplay mirroring not working after updating to Catalina using DosDude patcher. Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:56 PM PST I have a Mid 2011 Mac Mini and I used the DosDude Catalina patcher to upgrade MacOS to latest. Since then my Airplay doesn't display an icon on the Menu Bar on top. It's blank where it used to be. If I click my mouse, it says "AirPlay: Looking for TV"for a few seconds then switches to "AirPlay: Off". In Display Preferences the Show Mirroring Options.. is checked. What can I try to get this to work again? [link] [comments]
Fed up with Catalina instability - non Bootcamp Windows install much better. Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:18 AM PST My 2017 iMac started crashing in Mojave. Not too bad, just sometimes overnight and freezing while I was using it - a pause, then the spinning wheel. I read online about a couple of tweaks to improve the issue. I then upgraded to Catalina and was plagued with crashing issues. 10.15.1 was most stable, 10.15.3 beta least of all. I did a clean Mojave install and this was better. I tried Windows with Bootcamp - not bad but still the occasional glitch. If I hadn't read so many reports online of others in a similar situation I would believe my hardware was faulty, though it was completely stable pre-Mojave. I decided to install Windows 10, this time NOT using Bootcamp. I formatted a USB stick as NTFS on another Windows machine, used Rufus to create a bootable Windows installation, cleared space on my internal drive and installed Windows, applying the Apple support drivers afterwards. Once this was done I updated the Radeon Pro display drivers. I now seem to have a rock-solid installation. Not a single crash or glitch in days. I'm not entirely sure what to make of this. It seems to suggest there's nothing wrong with my iMac but plenty wrong with macOS from Mojave up and the Mac Radeon display drivers. I have Catalina installed on a 2012 Mac Mini which has been solid since Catalina was released - I've never needed to reboot it. There are a few inconsistencies in my thinking but I'd be interested to know what you guys think. [link] [comments]
Mac does not persist state when opening up from sleep/hibernate mode Posted: 05 Jan 2020 04:40 PM PST I have no idea when it happens, which is probably the most annoying part of it, but sometimes after I close my laptop and I re-open it several hours later, it did not persist it's state, although it's trying to by re-opening the applications that were open in my previous state. What is the cause of this problem? I'm running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6. [link] [comments]
MacBook not detecting MacOS live bootable flash stick Posted: 05 Jan 2020 10:27 PM PST I have a MacBook pro late 2008. Recently i was trying to bring it back to life and I was able to instal Linux on it. However, today I tried to install MacOS again and I downloaded OS version 10.4. I used my Chromebook to make a bootable Flash stick. The problem is, when I restart and hold the option down the flash stick drive does not show up in the boot-loader! I was wondering what I might be doing wrong. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jan 2020 03:48 AM PST Hello guys! Why is it so difficult to find a tool like file-roller and ark (both for Linux) for macos? Even 7zip has no GUI on macos, everything seems to be under payment. I guess what I mean is that I am looking for a Archiver program capable of doing tar, gz, bz, zip, ... and explore compacted files without having to decompress it first, but on GUI. Any ideas? PS.: file-roller is avaiable as a brew formulae, but it is gtk3, not at all well behaving on macos. [link] [comments]
How to skip through photos. No arrows. Posted: 05 Jan 2020 02:01 PM PST So i'm new to Mac and i'm using catalina on my macbook. When i open a photo in downloads i can't find a way to skip through the photos. I can't see an arrow. Can someone help me ? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:33 AM PST I have been searching for a good PDF reader that suits my business needs. I would love some advice. I am just starting up an interior design firm, so don't have the funds for a true pro reader. I use it most often for filling out forms and adding my signature. I have been testing different options, but at this point, I just need to chose one so that I can keep things organized. Preview is too slow for my needs, because I need to keep moving text boxes which takes too long. PDF Expert was probably the closest to perfect for me. I didn't like that the automatic text default was so large. I liked the way PDFelement organized my documents. I also liked that it used autofill so I did not have to retype the same information over. One thing I would love to have (but not necessary because I don't use it as often) is the ability to send a PDF to a client which they can sign without downloading anything. The ability to add my signature (and have it saved) is a necessity. I mostly work on my Macbook, but access on my iphone or ipad would be a bonus. I prefer to pay a one time fee rather than monthly, but only because that is usually a cheaper solution. I would love any advice. Thank you so much for any help! [link] [comments]
[HELP] Time tracker / Time management app Posted: 05 Jan 2020 06:47 AM PST What I need and can't find: an app that I set a daily task for a period of time, that track the time (so I can see if I'm reaching the goal weekly or monthly). Example: 4 hours a day for 3 months. I was using BE FOCUSED PRO, but it doesn't track the minutes (I do 4x1 hour, and if I stop the task with 3h50m, it only tracks 3 hours). [link] [comments]

Command-shift-4: Clearly a macOS Catalina Bug ... and Maybe Earlier? Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:34 AM PST I don't recall how long ago I first began noticing this issue, but it is a repeatable problem which anyone can verify for themselves. If I do a command-shift-4 in order to take a snapshot of a particular area of my screen, while the new snapshot is saved to my desktop as a PNG file, at the same time, using that command launches the Messages app and created a new empty message in it. Is anyone else experiencing this? Surely I can't be the only one. [link] [comments] |
