    Hi! Trying to update to Catalina. It won't let me as I am not on APFS. I've restarted my macbook air, gone into recovery mode, opened the Disk Utility, gone into Edit, and the option to convert to APFS isn't there (see image below). I've looked for it elsewhere and I cannot find it. As far as I know (or think at least) my laptop should be compatible. Does anyone know how I am failing or what should I do? I don't really know much about this and I would appreciate any help, thanks!

    Modifying the power button on macOS Sierra?

    Flashing folder icon on startup

    I have a 2015 15" MacBook Pro, it randomly started showing the flashing folder icon with a question mark. Tried resetting SMC, PRAM, tried repairing the disc but it keeps failing. I read in a lot of places it is the hard drive cable but this is for 2012 MacBook pros and older, does the 2015 have a hard drive cable or is something else the culprit?

    Catalina: External Monitor not working with DVI cable

    I upgraded to Catalina today and now, I am unable to connect to my external monitor with a DVI cable. I've seen that a lot of people are having issues with HDMI as well. Have there been any definite solutions to this?

    iMovie subtitles -

    What is the best way to add subtitles to an iMovie? The only options I saw online was to have multiple images with the text and then overlay the image with the video.

    Open to using alternative applications that have the ability to cut and do movie edits. Only must is that the application should have relative ease to add subtitles. iMovie works amazing for editing the video but I haven't found a good way to add subtitles.

    Search Pulse Issues

    Hi Yall

    I am having one hell of a time removing Search Pulse from my Mac. I have deleted all available extensions in Safari (only browser on computer), removed all profiles and other unauthorized admin access features, etc..

    However, the software is still there on the computer and every time I open Safari I am unable to change anything... Any thoughts would be appreciated!

    Help in Terminal!

    So i need some help running one single code in terminal. I am trying to give permissions to one file called make_cia on my desktop. This file is used by an app called Forwarder3ds.jar which is also on my desktop. I extracted this app to look at it's files as well on my desktop. i screenshoted the recommended line that i run in terminal to give make_cia permission but i simply don't have the know how to understand what is being suggested. every time i try anything i get either nothing or "no such file or directory". Can someone help me give this file permission so that this app can make .cia files?

    Strange behavior from App Store. I can't install any apps.

    I wanted to install iMovie and GarageBand on a MacBook Pro. I confirm that I'm logged in and I find the app, click on "get" and it turns to "install" which is green. So I click on the green "Install" and it goes back to "get".

    I look under Applications and I see that I have an empty folder call iMovie. I've got plenty of disk space, so I don't know what the problem is. I'm not getting any download animations, can't see where anything is downloading, don't know where to look.

    Any ideas what's going on here? Where do you go to see the progress of an app download?

    When I go to Xcode in the App Store, I see "open" so I'm clearly logged in and it's seeing that I've already installed Xcode, but It's just not installing iMovie or anything else that I've tried so far and no error message.

    Good remote desktop Application iPad pro 11” to Mac Mini

    So the last couple of days i am searching for a good remote desktop option for my iPad to use together with my mac mini. So far, all remote desktop apps i tried, the screen of my iPad Pro 11" is not used fully and they are very slow/buggy. I am also running a Windows 10 VM on it and when i remotely acces that one it works perfectly. Full screen, full speed, no problemo.

    So far i used:

    • Duet Air (no full screen and smart folio not detected)
    • Anydesk (does not get screenrecording permission in catalina)
    • VNC Viewer (UI is very buggy and lots of lag, black borders)
    • team vieuwer (very slow, black borders)

    Best one is Parallels Acces, the speed is very good and when i set the screen to a 4:3 ration, there are minor black bars on the left and right, But the software is not bug proof and when it bugs out it is a mess.

    I have not tried "Screens 4" yet but i am a bit hesistant cause it is rather expensive.

    Any more sugestions?

    So the factory reset has automatically installed OS Sierra and there is nothing else apart from standard apps installed now, however I only have 99GB free space, I need 114GB to update - how can I free up some space to install?

    (Catalina 10.15.2) iCloud Drive Desktop always evicting whole content

    Hello everyone,

    I have a problem that persists all the way through macOS 10.15.2:

    I set my Mac to keep all iCloud files and folders (deactivated "optimize storage").

    However, while all iCloud Drive directories stay downlaoded, my Desktop folder evicts all contents, today, it does so after every 10-20 seconds, leaving all Desktop contents with a "Cloud-Download" icon (as can be seen on the screenshot).

    Screenshot. All files and folders return to \"not-downloaded\" status after some amount of time.

    Does anyone know where to look for this problem's source?

    Turning iCloud Drive off and on doesn't help anything, not with restarting the Mac either.

    It seemed like Google's "Backup and Sync" was causing that problem originally. When I quit that, my Mac didn't misbehave for many days. But as I just said, it happens every few seconds today, and "Backup and Sync" is not even running anymore. So something else must be causing this problem.

    I don't have this problem on my other Mac.

    MBP 2012 a1278 - Issues with Internet Recovery + Prohibitory Sign + Question Mark Folder Sign

    Wondering if I could get some help here. Currently running a MBP 2012 (Model a1278)

    • Upgraded both RAM and SSD HD around April 2019 because my original HD failed
    • Couple days ago after turning on my laptop, I got the "Prohibitory Sign" - Not really uncommon for me as my old HD had similar issues once in a while. Usually I'd just go into Recovery Mode > Repair/Verify Disk > Reinstall OS
    • Tried to do the same process but for whatever reason, the install (I tried both Mountain Lion + Catalina) was showing 10+ Hours... I let the install sit through the night and it all failed showing the "Question Mark Folder Sign". At first I saw many mention that it could be my internet, but it didn't make sense since this was the first time I had an issue where the instal itself was being weird.
      • I did Diagnostic tests all of which showed no issues
    • Today I had an old 2TB External HD that I reformatted to APFS(?) and was able to install Catalina within about 2hours (which is what I'd typically expect in this exercise. I'm currently using my laptop with the External at the moment and it's
    • I just purchases a SATA 2.5 to USB 3.0 and I'm going to try connecting my SSD and trying to install Catalina from there directly. I believe my issue may be the Hard Drive Cable.
    • It might also be a good idea for me to create a bootable USB and install on my SSD, but I'm nervous that it'll fail so I haven't attempted this... yet.

    I guess my question here really is - before attempting to change the Hard Drive Cable, is there anything else I should check to see what could be causing the issue on my SSD? Any steps I am blindly missing?

    • ps. when I format my SSD, is it fine that it's on Mac OS Extended vs APFS? I tried both formats and both installations were taking forever and failed as mentioned previously.
    • I'm not sure if its my 6+ month old SSD or this Hard Drive Cable that is being the issue.

    tldr; 2012 MBP had "Prohibitory" sign pop up. Tried install via Internet Recovery which was taking abnormal amounts of time. After install completed, greeted with the "Question Mark Folder Sign" when turning machine on. Repurposed an old External Hard Drive and it was able to install and run Catalina with 0 issues so far. What part of my machine could possibly be causing my SSD to not install OS + repeatedly fail?

    Catalina: Performance & Compatibility -> Mac Pro 2009 (4,1) and Mac Pro 2010-2012 (5,1)

    I'm torn right now as to whether I should upgrade to Catalina.

    • The 32bit issue really has me depressed (going to have to run Parallels Mojave for critical apps I can't eliminate) and
    • the NOTARIZATION issue has me REALLY worried (will turning off Gatekeeper this spring still eliminate this thorn?).

    But I'm hearing a positive thing too that I hate to throw away: Supposedly Catalina gives about a 10-15% (single core) speed bump and ~20% (dual core) speed bump vs Mojave. I also hear that Parallels itself is around 10-15% faster in Catalina than in Mojave (not sure if that is from the previous figure OR on top of that).

    So I want to ask:

    1. What kind of performance improvements can we expect to see in Catalina on older hardware?
    2. Is there a good step-by-step how-to for installing Catalina on 2009 & 2010 MacPros? (I know it's supported and already running Mojave on them all, so I realize it should be pretty straight forward, but would feel better if I saw it all delineated out.)
    3. Any options other than Parallels (or another VM solution) to run 32bit apps?
    4. Will turning off Gatekeeper (`spctl --master-disable` AND SIP: `csrutil disable`) keep us out of this notarization hell that Apple is forcing on us?

    Trouble with transition from iTunes to Music with iphone- specifically custom ringtone removal

    I like to make my own ringtones (m4r's) on my Mac and put them onto my phone using part of a 'song' in iTunes. I was always able to add/remove easily with iTunes. But now that iTunes is "Music", I can't. I can still add* ringtones, but now there is no way I can find to remove* them. They just don't appear in any of the synch windows or tabs like they used to in iTunes. Naturally I'm hesitant to add new ones since I don't know how to remove them later. Are my days of custom tones over?

    Home sharing no longer working

    So I use my Apple TV 3 to stream the media I have in my iTunes (now Apple TV) library to my living room. Occasionally, I stream some media to my I-devices. Everything used to work fine, even with the upgrade to Catalina.

    Since a month or so, I have a Synology NAS (a DS418). I transferred all my media to that, made a new library there, and that was working fine as well. I have my Mac Mini turned on with Apple TV (the app) running, my actual media files on the NAS and that streamed just fine to my Apple TV (the device. I really hate the name for the new app).

    But since a few days, that's no longer working. Whenever I start up my Apple TV (device) and want to connect to the Mac, it gives me the yellow triangle and the message that my library couldn't be located in the network. It's the same on my iPhone and iPad. When I tap 'Home sharing' in my Apple TV app, it says 'Connection unsuccessful'.

    I've tried a lot. Rebooted every device in the network, reset my router, signed out and signed in on every device and I also checked the settings on my NAS. I think everything's fine there: the media folder is set to sharing with nearly everything and everyone.

    You might've guessed what's coming now: please help me. I'm stumped for new ideas, so I hope someone here know what to do.

    Error: problems installing OS on Macbook pro 2008 after erasing HD

    Hello,

    I have an old macbook pro 2008 which was running with El Captain. I restated it pressing cmd + R and erased the disk. I then tried to install again the OS (El Captain) but it did not work. It says: OS X could not be installed on your computer "no packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance...."

    I tried with changing the time from Terminal but did not work. I tried following all four options listed here: https://macreports.com/mac-this-item-is-temporarily-unavailable-please-try-again-later-fix/ but still did not work.

    I tried downloading High Sierra and created an external boot installer on an external hard drive. I plugged it in and restarted with startup manager and selected the external hard drive (which was renamed as Installer) and still, it did not work. It looked like it was installing for few second but then the screen turned grey with a "no symbol" and turned off after 10/15 seconds.

    I have no idea what to do next. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

    BitTorrent or uTorrent crashing when I open it
