iOS Jailbreak [Discussion] Piracy in the jailbreak community.

[Discussion] Piracy in the jailbreak community.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 03:38 PM PST

So hi, I am a developer, however I am going to use this account to keep myself as anonymous.

I have been reading the post that made claims on how pirate tweaks, inject malicious stuff into your devices, but piracy wouldn't be nearly as big of an issue if jailbreak tweaks were treated similar to how software on android/linux is.

To start, I have been part of many tech communities, some are

    • iOS Jailbreaking community
    • Android community
    • Linux community

All of these comunities treat software the same except the jailbreak community. See the differences below:

    • Android: Hey I developed this ROM, Xposed patch, etc. Get it for free in this website. This is hard to do ofc, and doing a ROM or patches is a challenge too.
    • Linux: Hey I developed this with the community it is a video editor for Unix-like platforms, contributions are highly welcomed just please follow the contribution requirements.
    • Jailbreaking: I made this work myself, changes the icons to dots, get it on the Packix repo for 4.99USD. the tweak has a strong DRM. No refunds.

Ex.. excuse me??? This is just illogical, some tweaks for example Limeios have been shown to be amazing! And they deserve the money for the effort, some tweaks, do nothing but basic things and people put DRM on their low effort tweaks and give horrible support for them.

    Non developed countries

I am 19 years old now, however I was around 13 when I started to jailbreak. Yes I pirated many tweaks, I don't live in a country with a bad economy but good luck getting my parents to get me something from the internet. Piracy looked like a good option, it was discouraged and not the best of options sure, but without pirating I wouldn't get into the jailbreak community or be a developer right now.

Some countries just can't access the tweaks and they pirate, some of them don't even know they are doing it, some people even donate to the pirate repo assuming it's giving to the dev (believe it or not), and I haven't commonly seen developers of any kind try to help the poor members of the jailbreak community or those who speak bad english.

"Don't use the tweak then lol" yeah this is a good solution, but you know that feeling of wanting something? Like a toy, and waiting for your parents to buy it for you as a kid?. Sure you don't go stealing a bike, and at the same thing you don't go stealing the tweak and that brings up to my next point.

If I had the money, would I buy your tweak?

This is a thing you need to ask to yourself, is your software worth it?

A clear example of this is Photoshop.

    • Do I like photoshop? Yes.
    • Have I ever paid for photoshop? maybe.
    • Do I have the money to pay for it? Yes.

People that pirate, aren't going to ever buy your software. You aren't gaining clients or users by making DRM. Infact, you're wasting time developing drm when most of the time tweak crackers can normally just delete the drm with minimal effort.

Some see this community as a quick money grab, and sell tweaks to make buttons round? Most people in the community wouldn't even realize how simple it is to do that.

Crying on Twitter "My stuff got cracked, I am quitting!!!"

DRM is temporary. Game developers use denuvo to prevent piracy but if the end user doesn't think the game is worth it they will crack it in 6 months when they can.

Software being cracked is never going to stop, ever, deal with it, focus on making your product better not the DRM.

    Open Source bad

Jailbreaking community has this thing with software that doesn't make much logical sense. People make things closed sourced, break others people tweaks and so on, if you make an alternative "OMG YOU COPIED ME". Dune was found to be copied and then the copier opened the source with a ton of things changed to hide what he did. if both were open source in the first place or if people were used to using free software more, this wouldn't have happened.

This doesn't happen in the Linux or Android community, they aren't perfect either, but developers normally try to help each other, not destroy each other, jailbreak seems all about money and "I hate this dev X don't expect my tweaks to work with his work and I refuse to fix it!!!* get my tweak at 20.99"

If you're a developer that identified with this post and you are going to rant on Twitter. Thanks my point is proven.

Feel free to reply to this with your opinions and contribute :)

Thanks to a friend for making the redaction better!

Edit: Thanks for the gold kind stranger!, platinum and more!

Edit 2: I will reply to all this tomorrow, I am going to sleep never expected all this traction.

    [Discussion] Pirate Repos Backdooring Devices

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 11:45 AM PST

Let me start this post off with "I don't care if you pirate."

1.) it's none of my business 2.) most the tweaks being released are half-baked anyways 3.) it really doesn't make a difference to me

Upon reversing certain cracked tweaks for research, such as Limneos and other packages hosted on popular piracy repositories. I have found certain binaries that have the ability beyond just having an arbitrary binary calling out to an arbitrary server for cracks. (kind of like your standard C2)

Popular tweaks are being targeted for this operation and are affected when released under the cracked binary. There is appended malicious code that allows a third party to access your device. I've tried posting evidence or naming affected repositories with tweak names, but have been advised not to my mods.

    So what is the impact?

Since these backdoors are running under an elevated context, certain sensitive information may be at risk for being disclosed. In a situation like this where this information CAN be accessed and are readily available, you should ASSUME that it is as a WORST-CASE scenario.

Your generic media content including photos (whatever they might be), can be exfiltrated and read. Your keychain can be exfiltrated and cracked (I assume you use this). https://github.com/macmade/KeychainCracker

Furthermore, you can use this forensic software to extract data from jailbroken phones. These tweaks just incorporate similar techniques because they're hooked into System level processes.

Elcomsoft, for example, can do just this! (Consider this tool's capabilities as a proof of concept)

(Yes, this is paid and expensive, but the techniques are nothing super proprietary). They just bundled it in a GUI and sold it to businessmen. You can read their blog posts on their research. https://www.elcomsoft.com/press_releases/eift_191202.html

But for checkra1n users, that means you're fucked whether you're jailbroken or not because you fit the criteria of having a permanently jailbreakable device, but that's not the point of this thread. (Including before first unlock.)

If you want to reverse some of binaries, I'd recommend using a test device for the initial extraction of the packages.

TL;DR - Unless you've cracked a tweak yourself, you're at risk of sensitive information disclosure and your device has been compromised. (Since some of you can't read, that means passwords, Safari artifacts, photos, etc) There are hundreds of tweaks, I'm not reversing all of them. Legitimate tweaks have a smaller risk of being malicious, but doesn't mean it's impossible.

[Discussion] Looking into the possibility of using iPhone and NFC Writer to emulate Amiibo(s) for Nintendo Switch

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 06:59 PM PST

As the title states, I'm currently looking into this as a personal project. I recently got a Switch for Christmas.

Anyone want to join the project with me? I need a group of about 10 folks; we'll do research, testing, etc.

    Please let me know, thanks!

[Release] BrightCam - A Tweak that Turns the Brightness to 100% when Using the Camera App

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 11:32 PM PST

Hi guys, this is my second tweak. This one was made after I noticed how well some Android phones look when they take pictures by turning up the brightness. This tweak is free and open source! Have fun learning from it!

    Description:

Have you ever been to a concert and wondered why some people's phone cameras look so much better than yours? Most of the time, it's because it's an Android and they have a feature where the screen's brightness gets turned all the way up to get a clearer shot. This tweak does just that. Opening the default camera app whether it be from the lock screen or the home screen will turn the screen's brightness to 100% and restore it once the app is closed.

Don't hesitate to report issues via the issue tracker on the tweak's repository! I'll try my best to get to them.

Note: This tweak currently does not support arm64e (My development environment is on iPhone, not Mac :( )

[HELP] How I fixed checkra1n rebooting at night

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 05:56 AM PST

First off, Checkra1n has been an amazing experience so far. At the beginning it was flawless. Due to me updating and not restoring, and also bad tweaks I eventually started getting random resprings and reboots while charging at night. I know other people have been having the same problems, so these are the steps I took to fix it.

Install system memory reset fix from Pwn20wnd. (Some of you may have this package in your Cydia, but I only had version 1.0 And version 2.0 is what worked for me.) so I went to http://unc0ver.dev and downloaded unc0ver to Filza so I could get the new version.

Open filza, click undecimus ipa and extract it. Open the new extracted folder undecimus. Go Payload/ Undecimus.app/ Apt. Scroll down till you see System Memory Reset deb file. Make sure it's version 2.0. Install it then respring.

For extra measure you can install jetslammed to also unlock more ram to your phone. And powerloghelperdfix to stop that from crashing.

My iPhone X 13.3 just went it's first night charging without rebooting ever since I updated to 13.3. Lemme know if this method worked for you.

    Edit: Pwn20wnd not Pwned20wnd (I'm sorry unc0ver daddy)

[Discussion] Seems Like BigBoss Is Back Online

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 08:11 PM PST

What's happening Community. Earlier today I was having problems downloading updates to Reprovision and Succession. I attributed the problem to the fact that the BigBoss was down and as such a dependency may have been lacking. At any rate, I just re-checked Cydia and was able to get the updates so I'm assuming BB's back up. Anyone care to confirm?

[Update] StopAStupidThief V1.4 - iOS 13 support (with one issue to fix)

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 10:28 AM PST

V1.4 Prevents the power menu from showing on the lock screen, but with one issue: the device freezes for about 10 seconds when trying to open the power menu on the lockscreen. Of course it is not a huge issue because the tweak still serves its purpose, but obviously I would prefer to find a better way to do it. I will continue to work on I but for now I wanted to provide a temporary solution.

Explanation for freeze: I am using -(bool)_canShowWhileLocked, a method that Apple left, but it seems to be incomplete code because it causes a freeze. I need to find another way to prevent shutdown like making something else happen when the power slider is slid instead.

    [Question] Apple Trade in program?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:21 PM PST

not necessarily jailbreak related but was posted on r/apple but posts that benefit the user are not allowed, you guys tend to be cooler most the time anyway, and i know this community knows their shit about iphones, and not just jailbreaking. please help.

i looked this up on google, on multiple websites including apple.com but nothing was very clear on how you get your funds. with the trade in program, do you get actual cash back ? as in, if i buy an iphone 11, and trade in my 6s for $120 value , can i only get app store credit / gift card credit? or can i get actual money ? can i buy the phone, send my phone in, then get a refund of $120 to my bank account?

Also to the best of my knowledge you have to pay the full price up front, and send your phone in where they will inspect your phone to see if it is good for the trade in program, and when it's confirmed to be in working condition, you then receive your money back , whether it is money refunded to your bank account, app store credit, or an in-store apple gift card. is my understanding correct ?
