What kind of cloth should I use to clean my MacBook Air’s screen

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 11:19 PM PST

I soaked my washcloth with warm water and wiped the screen but it left stain like crazy that I'm afraid that it will damage the outer coating.

Loading bar upon sign in after restart

Loading bar upon sign in after restart

Since updating to Catalina, every time I sign into my 2019 MacBook Pro after a restart a loading bar appears and it takes anywhere from 10-20 seconds before I get to the desktop. I don't remember this happening on Mojave before updating, but I'm also new to MacOS so I might have just missed it. It's not really an issue, just a minor inconvenience that I'm wondering if there's a fix for.

    Question Regarding MacBook (air/pro) Purchase

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 08:18 PM PST

Hi, I am considering a macbook and just am curious as to how much future proofing I should consider when purchasing one, be it an air, book or pro. I see that the requirements for catalina the latest os, is *MacBook: Early 2015 or newer *MacBook Air: Mid 2012 or newer *MacBook Pro: Mid 2012 or newer, Retina display not needed

and am not exactly sure whether or not the next update would need 2013 for the air and pro to be necessary and 2016 for the regular book. I am familiar with the iPhone cut offs for the newest iOS versions. Any and all help would be appreciated!

Did Apple remove the touch bar escape button on the 2018 Macbook Pros as well?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 06:38 AM PST

I just started my MBP this morning and realized there is no more escape button on the touch bar anymore. Now I know there is a new MBP with a physical escape key so there is none in the touch bar, but why would they make it so that it disappears for older models as well? It was there yesterday and I couldn't google anything today.

This messes up my workflow massively. Is there a way to have it back in the touch bar? Looked into system preferences > keyboard, but there is nothing I can do there. I also can't put on different keys, since I need them to operate my programs.

EDIT: A simple reboot has actually brought it back for me. Kinda embarrassing I didn't come up with that.

    MacBook Retina 12inch, Early 2015 - Overheating

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:38 PM PST

I have a MacBook Retina 12inch, Early 2015 which keeps shutting down as it's overheating - first it reduces performance, then shuts down - but I'm not doing anything other than browsing the web in Safari or checking email - nothing processor intensive.

I downloaded the Fanny app and that shows a CPU temperature of between 50 and 54 degrees celsius - which feels too low to cause a protective shutdown? I've reset the PRAM and SMC but I'm still having the problem?

    Any suggestions?

[Question]--- Unsolved mystery? --- Wrist/Hand pain with Macbook 15' but NOT 13'?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 03:53 PM PST

So, my first macbook ever was a 2014 macbook pro 15. After 2 mo, i started getting severe achey pain on the medial/pinky side of my hand. I thought it was an issue with overuse, etc. I tried everything (doctors, braces, pads, rest, ice, PT). Eventually switched to a surface pro 4 and had no problem.

Fast forward, my work gave us 2015 13' Macbooks. Still no problem. Pain free.

I miss/enjoy the apple experience so wanted to get a personal macbook so I started shopping around. I wanted a bigger screen so I looked at the 15' again. Even playing around with it in the store for 10-15 min, I started feeling the pain again. Once I start using my 13', again no pain.

Has anyone experienced this? I prefer the 15' SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 13', but I cant stand the pain.

    1) Curious why this is? Im guessing the keyboard dimensions. Maybe the "platform" extends out a bit longer than the 13, hence the edge hits a particular portion of my nerve?

    2) Any advice? Any alternatives? I really prefer the 15 over the 13.

    3) will I have the same problem with the 16 if the 15 ergonomics was really the issue?

For people with extensive experience on both platforms, what are some reasons I should choose a Macbook Pro over a similarly specced Linux laptop?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 07:57 AM PST

I've used Linux as my primary desktop operating system for many years (first Slackware and now Fedora), and I'm very familiar with it (both professionally and personally).

But lately I've been itching to start using a Macbook. I believe about 95% of my day to day work can be accomplished on one, as well as a few perks that are unavailable to me on Linux, such as a couple of games I like that can't be played natively on Linux, and non-web MS Office products (yes, I am aware of LibreOffice/etc).

Anyway, I like the idea of moving to a Macbook for the more tightly integrated ecosystem, and the fact that it seems like it might be a bit of the best of both worlds.

But, it's a pricy investment. The macbook I'm wanting comes out at about $2600 and I'm not really sold on it to that degree yet. When I search Google for ways that a Macbook is a superior choice to a Linux laptop, all I get are a bunch of pages about why you should use Linux instead.

So I wanted to ask any of you who might have a lot of experience on both platforms, what are some reasons that a Macbook is the better choice? (not necessarily asking if it is the better choice, but what are the selling points to convince me that it could be).

Advice on hard drive upgrade - M.2 or SSD (future proofing concerns)

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 10:45 AM PST

    Hello all,

    TL;DR:

    1. I need advice on whether to do m.2 SATA or plain old SATA SSD upgrade for mid 2012 MBP (see if there are any issues I'm not aware of). Decided on 860 EVOs (links below).
    2. If the consensus = go with m.2 SATA, then I need advice on what caddy to use for mid MBP 2012 upgrade.

Details:I am going to upgrade my 'mid 2012 macbook pro' with a 2tb solid state drive. From the research I've decided on the samsung evo 860. The process so far:

    1. Decided on 2tb SSD: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MZ-76E2T0B-EU-Solid-State/dp/B078WRSSVT/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=samsung+860+evo&qid=1577471658&sr=8-4
    2. Then discovered m.2 had been out for years (and suddenly felt like an old man).
    3. Thought that if my machine packs it in and I upgrade or switch to Windows/Linux machines/laptops, I might not be able to use the SSD, so I better future proof.
    4. Thought latest m.2 would be most future proof, so was thinking 970 evo m.2: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-MZ-V7S2T0BW-970-EVO-Plus/dp/B07MLJD32L/ref=sr_1_15?keywords=samsung+960+evo+2tb&qid=1577471879&sr=8-15
    5. Came across this info that said NVMe m.2's won't work in mid 2012 mbp: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/536658/Does+Late+2012+model+support+PCIe-NVMe+SSD and https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/494910/Upgrade+original+SSD+to+Samsung+970+Pro+M.2+drive+256GB and https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/970-evo-ssd-in-macbook-pro-mid-2012.2132177/
    6. Felt a bit relieved as that'd be 100 bucks more.
    7. Now I'm thinking the m.2 SATA evo 860 (above).
    8. Need advice on whether to do m.2 SATA or SSD SATA upgrade (see if there are any issues I'm not aware of).
    9. If the consensus = go with m.2 SATA, then need advice on what caddy to use for mid MBP 2012.

I have to constantly keep resetting the smc on my Mac and the problem has become very frequent (every alternate time of turning on my Mac). this has become a recurring problem and don't know how to fix it.

The battery cycle count is at 349 and holds its charge perfectly fine. Also checked for physical damages and there seem to be none.

    Kindly help. Thanks!

    Subscript command MacBook?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 01:26 PM PST

So I use the subscript command every day on my old computer and it has always been control/command comma. But when I got my new MacBook, the MacBook Pro, command comma only brings up an advanced options screen. Is there any way I can alter this?

    Downloading movies?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 12:28 PM PST

We are going to be in the land of no wifi or cell reception for a couple days and I wanted to download a couple movies form the Apple TV store.

Is EVERYTHING available to download once rented/purchased, or only certain titles (like Netflix)? I can't seem to find any spots on the titles where it says either way?

    Thanks!

Is 4K display resolution coming to MacBook Pro 16 in 2020?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2019 01:27 AM PST

As 4K is commonly used by designers and editors, I think most users will benefit from having a 4K display. As a researcher on computer science who both writes manuscripts and does programming stuff, I'd welcome 4K resolution.
