AirPods Pro vs Bose QC35 on a 15 hour flight - my review Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:17 PM PDT Hey guys, I picked up the AirPods Pro at the Apple Store the moment it opened on Wednesday. I then immediately hopped on a flight from the US to Hong Kong - here are my thoughts: COMFORT YESSSSSSSSSS this is what I've been dreaming of! I hated the big headphones when trying to rest my head against a pillow trying to sleep. I hated the AirPods falling out and me having to search the floor and my seat for them when I wake up and realized they were gone. I hated the QC20s because I would get tangled up in the wires. This is what I was looking for. Thank you, Apple. NOISE CANCELLATION Ok so this is why we're all here, right? Noise cancellation was incredible. Honestly incredible. They were on par with the QC35s, and in some aspects, better. I found that it cancelled the background hum very slightly better than the QC35s, and also better at cancelling out voices - though I think this was more the isolation part than the active noise cancellation. With the Bose, if there is a cabin announcement or a flight attendant is talking to me, I'm usually aware of it enough to be able to know it's going on and take off my headphones. With these, honestly, I often found myself not even aware - they were that good. Probably a flight attendants nightmare, but I did find myself being able to see when they were going through the aisles and put it into transparency mode. One big difference with noise - with the Bose, during takeoff, on some of the planes/engines that I fly (I fly 200k miles a year), I find that the noise cancellation doesn't work well and it ends up making an awful noise for a few seconds, to the point where I sometimes have to take them off. There's just some frequency that it doesn't like. This was not an issue with the AirPods Pro. Additionally, when I rest my head against the side of the airplane to sleep with the Bose, the vibration often caused noise in the Bose. Not an issue with the AirPods Pro since they don't stick out enough to hit the side of the plane. USAGE WITH IFE Okay so this part is a bit more annoying. With the QC35s, I can just plug them into the IFE. For this, I had to use Twelve South's AirFly. It works. It's another thing to carry around and keep charged. But it works. BATTERY LIFE OOOOOOOkey. So here's where things go south. Battery life is dismal. A fully charged set, brand new, lasts 4.5 hours. My flight, after including boarding, taxi, takeoff, and landing, was well over 16 hours. That's a problem. It's unrealistic to get a 100% charge - in reality, it won't be ever really fully charged since it charges much faster at lower %, and you'd have to wait much longer for a full charge than a 80% charge. So, on a 16 hour flight like mine, you'd have to charge like 5 times - and that's what I did. Thankfully, the charge time is relatively fast. I put it in the case every time I got up to go to the bathroom, and it wasn't too bad. It would drop down to 10%, I'd get up to use the bathroom, walk around, stretch, get back and it's charged to 50%. Workable, but really not great. It also means that you can't keep listening to your entertainment while walking around the cabin, which I liked doing. I wish they had made it a bit longer like the original AirPods and improved the battery life instead. CONCLUSION Okay so what does this mean: for short/medium haul flights, such as domestic USA flights, this replaces my Bose QC35. Period. I'm leaving that bulky case at home from now on. For long haul flights... it's a bit tougher of a sell with the battery life where it is. On my flight here, I left the Bose in the case other than for the direct comparison, and it was a bit of a hassle. If the QC35 batteries die, you can still use them sans noise cancellation. If the AirPods Pro die, you're SOL. I think for trips where I'm concerned about packing light, I'll forgo the Bose for the AirPods Pro, but if I have the space to spare, the Bose will still stay with me. [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:05 PM PDT It's been two days since I've had my AirPods Pro swiftly delivered in a brown box to my home in London and this post is to tell you all about what my experience (as a long time Apple user) has been like! I have owned a pair of AirPods (first-gen) since the day they launched back in 2016 (before they were cool) and have used them as my daily driver between a mix of taking underground/overground trains to work/university. Living in London means lots of use of public transport and unpredictable weather which AirPods Pro might just be the solution to! I have also recently been trying out the Nuraphone headphones which offer similar noise cancelling abilities although in a unique over-ear / in-ear combo so this has helped me normalise my opinions. Right let's get to it! Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know in the comments / what you think! Unboxing The AirPods Pro packaging is almost identical to AirPods', the only difference is that a Lightning to USB-C cable is included and a pair of small and large ear tips are also included. - If you've ever caught a whiff of the 'new Apple product smell' (it's a thing) then you might be surprised to know that AirPods Pro actually smell different to other unboxings, likely due to the silicone which isn't featured in much of Apple's product line. Initial Thoughts Out of the box it felt very much like unboxing a new pair of AirPods rather than a new hero product which was fine since it's still had the same Apple attention to detail you would expect. - From the raised printing and perfectly folded cardboard to the clean corners and perfectly aligned stickers etc. The AirPods Pro case itself was shiny and compact and has a wonderfully audible snap as expected. As for the AirPods Pro's themselves: similar to AirPods, a little shorter and very familiar overall. Setup Out of the box, my iPhone needed to update before I was able to 'get the most' of the AirPods since only the newest version of iOS supports the mode switching from Control Center. - Once that was done, I tapped on 'Connect' and was greeted with a quick demo of some of the controls and got straight to listening! Comfort Before I even tried them on with the tips out of the box I switched into the smallest tips provided in the box as I assumed these would be the most comfortable for me. The tips themselves are very nice and soft and not as sticky as other tips for example on the BeatsX or Nuraphones. I ran the Ear Fit Test that Apple provided and I was good to go! - Wearing these for hours at a time has not caused me any discomfort that I previously did experience with AirPods which was very good and the charging case is only slightly bigger than before so still fit in all the places they would usually go. My conclusion is that these are MORE comfortable than normal AirPods AND I genuinely forget that they were in my ears unlike before. Sound AirPods Pro provides high-quality audio which sounds good at many different volume levels. I found myself listening to music less loud than normal thanks to the noise cancellation and to be honest couldn't tell much different in sound quality from AirPods on their own. With that said, having noise cancelling enabled completely changes the experience and is something I have really enjoyed on trains, busses and walking through busy streets and it feels like the only person in the world is myself. Glitches Throughout the course of my testing my left AirPods Pro stopped working. It could tell when I removed it as it would pause and play as I took it out/in but would only actually play sound from the right ear... I reset my AirPods Pro and restarted the phone etc and that didn't do the trick so I can only assume this is some early glitch. When I came back to them a couple hours later everything was back to normal! Noise Cancellation Right so naturally this is the most exciting part about AirPods Pro (apart from the sweat resistance, fast charging etc). ANC on AirPods Pro is AMAZING! - I was sceptical at first since they are so small and the microphones on my first-gen AirPods were just decent enough for making phone calls but these did not fail to impress once you got used to the differences between Transparency and Noise Cancellation modes. Modes There are three ways to use AirPods Pro on your devices. (Noise Cancellation, Off and Transparency). - Off is self explanatory and provides some level of reducing loud sounds around you given that the ear tips create an actual seal instead of before. Then there's transparency mode with uses the microphones to enhance what you hear around you so that if you are on the train for example you can still hear the announcements (and unfortunately the hum of the train moving along the tracks). Full active noise cancellation in the last mode is my favourite and it's obvious whether you are in this mode or not when no music is playing. It's actually quite an unusual experience to have that's akin to wearing earplugs while you go about your daily life! - On the train, these are super portable and the ANC completely blocked out all the sounds of passengers talking, most of the announcements were very quiet and the screeching and humming of the train was almost none. Then when you actually start playing music, you forget anything else but your music exists! Pros Super portable, significantly more comfortable than AirPods on their own, effective noise cancellation, fast charging, water resistance, they offer a very similar experience that isn't complicated but simply works when it needs to. Cons USB-C to Lightning (personally not an issue but I'm really trying hard to fault Apple on these things!). The material of the case is the same as before and in my experience likely going to scuff pretty quickly as well as take on a blue tint from wearing denim. Worth Upgrading? / Conclusion If you care about having ANC and a slightly more comfortable fit then YES! So personally I will be keeping them but otherwise these are not going to replace AirPods anytime soon. TL;DR - I've been using AirPods Pro for 48 hours. The general experience is very familiar if you have owned AirPods before. Active noise cancellation works very well and this creates a completely different listening experience for me and is enough to warrant an upgrade. - Overall hard to fault and very happy with the purchase! Apple has delivered on what they have promised once again! [link] [comments]

Replaced devices are eligible for 1year Apple TV+ offer Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:23 PM PDT Fun thing I found out, I'm not sure if this is common knowledge (hasn't been following the TV+ stuff) I just bought an iPad Pro 2017 which was originally purchased in February 2018. It was replaced in warranty and it was not activated. I started it up, put in my Apple ID and I got the promotion. [link] [comments]

AirPods Pro vs Sony WF-1000XM3s (Review) Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:47 PM PDT Full disclosure: I used to be an Apple employee and my wife still is. I was able to purchase the AirPods at the employee discounted price. I recently purchased the Sony's (I'm not going to type out the ridiculous name again) from Best Buy after hearing such good things about them. A couple days later, I bought the AirPods Pro. TL;DR I returned the Sony's and kept the AirPods. Battery Life: This category goes to the Sony's but only barely. The battery life is objectively longer on the Sony's than the AirPods. Comfort: I have a tough time finding comfortable earbuds. I don't know if it's the shape of my ears or what but it's been a struggle for me for a long time. The AirPods easily win this category for me. The Sony's were bigger, heavier, and didn't fit nearly as well regardless of which tips I used. Even after hours of adjusting them I still didn't feel like they were in my ears properly. The AirPods went in and immediately felt good. I didn't even have to change the tips. Another problem for me is I hate that feeling like you're underwater when you can feel the pressure in your ears. The AirPods have a vent specifically to fix this and it works flawlessly. I barely feel the AirPods. Noise Cancelation: The Sony's win here in terms of noise cancelation. Although it's better, I still find the AirPods good enough. They aren't going to be great for something like on a plane, but honestly neither are the Sony's (they'll just be a little bit better). For an environment like that I'd want over-the-ear headphones anyway. Sound Quality: This is the main category where the Sony's win. They're undeniably better than the AirPods. Again, though, I'd use over-the-ear headphones to maximize this. Connectivity: The AirPods win this category easily. Setup was seamless and of course the integration with iOS is all there. The Sony's require using a very clunky app that acts like it hasn't been updated since iOS 10. The main factor in me returning the Sony's was because of Bluetooth issues. The left side kept dropping out every hour or so. Portability: The AirPods Pro case is larger than the previous AirPods case but smaller than the Sony's. The Sony's case is also less streamlined so it sits weirdly in the pocket of my jeans. Call Quality: The AirPods win hands down. The largest complaint in all the reviews for the Sony's is microphone quality, and there's a good reason for it. The person on the other end may sound great to you, but you'll sound like shit to them. The AirPods blow the Sony's out of the water in this category. Compatibility: This should be obvious. The AirPods work with everything Apple: Siri works (the Sony's only work with Google Assistant) and the buttons on the AirPods are able to control features of the phone. The Sony's buttons are only able to play/pause and even that only works intermittently. Of course the AirPods are also able to seamlessly translation to a different device (like an iPad). Overall, I'd recommend the AirPods over the Sony's. For me, it's no contest. Edit: spelling/grammar [link] [comments] |
