I simply modified the mouse support shortcut so it doesn't ask if you want to turn on and off. Just as simple as tapping/clicking . sadly I don't have a mouse yet to show

What Apps Helped Replace a Laptop?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 06:27 AM PDT

I am looking at replacing my Linux based laptop with an iPad Pro 11", but this could apply to any iPad used as a laptop/desktop replacement.

Specifically, I am looking for apps that helped transition you from doing a task on the laptop to doing it on the iPad instead. I dont mean the obvious browse the internet, watch Youtube and check email...I am talking more; utility, niche, poweruser, etc. kind of tasks. Things typically perceived as requiring a traditional computer to do.

Here are some of the things I have in mind (most of which I have not actually used yet):

    • Microsoft Office: I know the version on the iPad is not 100% as capable as the computer programs are, but its come a long way. Was exploring them last night. Likely good enough to do 99% of what I typically do in Office on a computer. Resume's, letters, "simple" spreadsheets, "simple" presentations and notes. I also happen to already have o365.
    • Working Copy: I am active on Github and now Gitlab as well. Most of what I do being shell scripts and markdown (so pretty simple). I do however gpg sign my commits (which the app seems to support) and use 2FA. Until now I had simply done this 100% via the web/browser editor on the respective sites. This could streamline things for me.
    • Microsoft RDP: Should allow me to RDP into Windows machines on my network. On Linux I had used Remmina, which also supported VNC, Spice, etc. Would be nice to find something that does it all as well as Remmina had.
    • iMovie: I will probably use this to edit video. On the laptop had been using Shot cut/Kdenlive and nothing real fancy.
    • Terminus: Used for SSH into my Linux/*nix based machines. Has so far worked well, but when I had Android used Juice SSH, really miss that app. Was just easier to use, smoother, idk.
    • Notability/GoodNotes: For taking notes should I get the Apple pen, still unsure if I will get it.

Some of what I am looking for or considering:

    • PDF's: something to open, edit, sign, save PDF's.
    • Calculator: Just something as simple as on the iPhone. Offline, trustworthy, simple.
    • Networking/Wifi Info: Something reliable/trustworthy to scan Wifi around me, see SSID's, channels, etc. Used to use Wifi Analyzer when I used Android, something similar to that.
    • Spice viewer: Have a Proxmox server and many of the virtual clients are setup using Spice for display. Would be nice to have an app to connect to/use Spice instead of relying on RDP/VNC/SSH.
    • Youtube Downloader: Just looking for a simple, no bs way to download video/audio from Youtube. I dont do it often, but I would like the ability. So far all my searches lead to either questionable apps or a Shortcut that cant be used because iPadOS 13.x doesn't allow unauthorized shortcuts any longer nor the option to allow them (and I have yet to find a step by step on how to make the shortcut myself).

So in any case that's what I have going on. Would be interested to see what apps are helping others break free of traditional computers and allowing them to use their iPad as the day-to-day "computer" in their life. Thanks

    Sidecar Alternative

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 07:45 AM PDT

Hey guys! So I have a MacBook Air 2017 and an iPad Air 2019. The feature was excited the most about macOS Catalina was sidecar, but it seems that it is not compatible with MacBook Air 2017. I've researched and it seems some users were able to "activate" sidecar and use it with older MacBook models. So do you think I should wait for Apple to enable sidecar for MacBook Air 2017 (if that would ever happen) or look for some alternative like Duet? Thank you for your input.

    Battery life on 13.1.3

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 12:05 AM PDT

I've had massive battery issues since 13.1 but it finally got fixed with the latest update. I just got 12 1/2h screen on time over the course of three days with it. I'm so glad they finally fixed it because the battery life was pretty bad before this update, especially the idle drain was really high. How has battery life been for you since 13.1.3?

LumaFusion just added full support for external storage in iOS13. You can now edit directly without importing to your iPad storage.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 03:46 AM PDT

This is huge! Now you don't need to fill up your internal storage with heavy video files and can work directly from an SSD or HDD just like on a laptop/desktop.

Edit: Looks like this isn't true after all - I misunderstood the wording in the update. It allows you to browse, preview and trim files and then add them to your project. Not sure if it still copies the entire clip or just the section you trimmed.

What would you say the annual depreciation rate of iPad value is?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 07:51 AM PDT

I'm working on a project for work and was figuring out if it would be more beneficial to lease iPads or buy them out in bulk. In the lease we would just return the iPads at the end and get updated ones vs buying them out. I've been trying to figure it out but it's a little more in depth than I would have thought.

    Thanks!

    Gmail in iPad Safari

    Posted: 24 Oct 2019 05:26 AM PDT

I use iPad Safari for my gmail account. I have updated to 13.1.3. Safari will not consistently load the desktop version of gmail. About half the time the mobile view is loaded although the option to load the desktop version is on. In the pull down box, I then select mobile, then select desktop to get the desktop view. Any suggestions for this? Thanks.

I'm planning to buy a new Ipad and i'm not sure which one will be the best for my daily use:

Reading books, comics and news // Watching movie (Netflix, crunchy) // Indie gaming // Word // Traveling

Ipad 9,7 (6 gen) is at 350$ CA atm and the Ipad mini 5 is at 529$

I want to keep it for the next ~5 years.

    iPad Mini 2 pen suggestions?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 04:42 PM PDT

Hi all. I've been looking for a pen to write with on my iPad mini 2. I recently downloaded Notability, but I just found out that the Apple pens won't function on the older iPads. Does anyone recommend anything similar to the pen that'll work for my Mini 2 to take notes?

    Thanks in advance.

Tips for transitioning to iPad as full time/primary computer/daily driver?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:23 AM PDT

So, I currently have an iPad Air (2019), and have been in the market for a new laptop after my MacBook Air (2018) got stolen. I purchased a 2019 MBP which, it seemed, all the NYC Apple Stores I went to had a bad batch, or a software issue, or something, because there was an identical display defect on all of the exchanges I tried (a shadow/mura-like thing, not backlight bleeding, at the upper right of the screen—multiple Genius Bar techs agreed it was there). So, disillusioned, I tried the new Surface Laptop 3 over yesterday and today. I must have the worst luck in the world because there have been defects with these too, also verified by MS people.

So at the moment, I'm considering ditching the whole lot and leaning into iPad as a primary computer. My use case is I'm a grad student, teacher, and writer—most of my productivity involves word processing. I'm also a big media consumer, though I don't really game on my PCs—I primarily use my computers for movie watching and music playing. I also use social media extensively. Beyond this I don't do a whole lot—occasionally I film videos via webcam and edited them in iMovie on my Macs. Maybe some light photo editing.

My question is: how easy do you think it'd be to transition to this workflow? I'm actually very tempted to gift this iPad Air or keep it as a backup, and getting an iPad Pro for more storage/bigger screen/USB-C for compatibility elsewhere. Doing this will actually drive down my cost for the replacement device even just that much further, even after a keyboard folio and AppleCare+.

And beyond that, are there any particular suggestions you have for me? I've been making my workflow work on this iPad best I can (though the screen size is JUST small enough to bug my eyes), and iPadOS has been amazing for this.

Looking for Linux Users Who Replaced Laptop With iPad

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 05:47 AM PDT

Have had a laptop running Linux for the last 2 years. At the time, a ~$700 Dell 13" 1080p screen, i5-8250U (4c/8t) with 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. Problem is the original battery health took a nose dive about a year later. 4 months ago I replaced it with an OEM battery that is now showing 70% battery health. I expect this to deteriorate quickly...maybe another 4 months before its not practical to use it on battery any longer.

Batteries for the laptop range from $50 for 3rd party stuff to $80 for OEM. Doesn't seem worth it to me. To replace it with another laptop with all the specs I would want now would run me a minimum of $1k, up to about $3k depending on what I go with (15" Macbook Pro being on my list of considerations).

I currently have a 2018 iPad 9.7" 128GB which I use practically every day for browsing, email, media and gaming. Very happy with it for its intended purpose but its not something (as is) that I would update the resume on, do some scripting, etc. I do also have a desktop running Windows 10 for gaming.

However I am now flirting with the idea of an 11" iPad Pro 256GB as a laptop replacement. I can trade-in/sell my iPad 9.7" and get the 11" Pro + keyboard case and essentially use it like I would have my laptop. My laptop is my day-to-day machine, used for everything except PC gaming. I figure for the price, I will be just under what a laptop would be and the quality will be in favor of the iPad at that price.

Been hard pressed to come up with reasons not to do this, my only concern being I wont know what the reasons not to do this are until I have done it. Wondering if others have made a similar transition and if there have been any downsides to it?
