Other uses for this tweak could be changing "Facebook" to something else so it doesn't say "Facebook" on the app or notifications. [Question] Can someone explain how checkm8 is exclusively a tethered exploit? Posted: 18 Oct 2019 08:23 AM PDT Checkm8 is a bootrom exploit that essentially makes an entire iDevice vulnerable. It's unpatchable at a software level and can be used to bypass the most low-level of security checks in the iOS boot process... so what's stopping it from ever becoming a fully-fledged untethered exploit? I've got the impression that a bootrom exploit should be able to bypass almost all security checks and validation but this doesn't seem to be the case for several reasons: Any jailbreak as a result of checkm8 will be tethered and require a computer to boot the phone into a jailbroken state Downgrading (without nonce/SEP/etc) will require you to boot using a computer Wouldn't a bootrom exploit allow for the patching of these checks that validate the phone's OS is genuine and not tampered with? Could we ever see an untethered jailbreak and untethered downgrade / custom IPSW booting with checkm8? From my limited understanding and basic research, there's two main ways to create an untethered jailbreak; Patch LLB-based and kernel hacks.
