Pro Tip: Set Apple TV 4K to 4K SDR and enable match dynamic range Posted: 26 Sep 2019 04:32 PM PDT As a long time Apple TV 4K user, I cannot believe that it took me this long to understand how to get the ATV4K to display SDR and HDR content seamlessly. 🤦♂️ When I first bought my Apple TV 4K, it did not have the "Match Content" settings. Apple delivered that is a later. During initial setup, I was prompted to enable HDR when configuring ATV4K for the first time, and while it looked amazing with 4K HDR content, the picture was overly bright and a bit washed out when viewing non-HDR content. It turns out, with some easy changes to settings, your ATV4K will automatically adjust between SDR and HDR. No more overly bright, washed out colors with non-HDR content and your HDR content will still look as brilliant as ever. This is how you can "fix" the issue with your ATV4K.. ignore Apple's suggestion to enable HDR during setup. Instead, do this:
Once you are done, your ATV4K will work properly. Video content that is SDR will be displayed as SDR, with properly saturated colors that won't be washed out, and your HDR content will automatically adjust to HDR so your picture will look amazing. The magic that makes this possible is the "Match Dynamic Range" setting in step 4. While I did enable this Feature when it was first released, no one told me to change the default format to "4K SDR." Most of the content viewed on ATV4K these days is not HDR. If you already knew this tip, congrats. If you didn't, go ahead and change your settings now! [link] [comments]

Upgraded the tvOS, and now I can only turn on the TV by mirroring through Airplay Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:32 AM PDT I have an Apple TV connected to a Samsung smart TV. Ever since upgrading tvOS, neither the Samsung remote nor the Apple remote will turn on the AppleTV. I just get the "power on" prompt, and it ignores me. I discovered the only way to activate the Apple TV is to trigger airplay and mirror my computer to the TV. Then I can cancel the mirroring and use the AppleTV as usual. Any ideas how to fix this? Has anyone else encountered it? [link] [comments]
Apple TV remote in sleep mode when I use my iPhone remote? Posted: 27 Sep 2019 03:52 AM PDT If I'm not using my normal Apple TV remote it is in sleep mode until I touch a button. Where can I change that it just stays on continuously because sometimes I use my phone and the standard remote and then it is not convenient that I always have to activate the remote? Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:06 AM PDT Hello! Before buying an Apple TV 4K, I just wanted to ask a question of how the audio works after the Dolby Atmos update. (I plan to connect it to my receiver, which is connected to my TV.) Does the Apple TV always send the audio as Dolby Atmos (upscaled in some way), or can it send it as the source format (stereo/5.1 etc)? The reason I wonder is that I would rather have my receiver doing the upconversion to Atmos. All the info I can find online is about the matching of content for the image (HDR/frame rate). Thank you for your help! [link] [comments]
5.1 Audio not working with 4K HDR sources (Netflix, Amazon Prime) Posted: 26 Sep 2019 02:39 PM PDT Hey all, I have an Apple TV 4K connected directly to my new Vizio P659-G1 TV. Also connected to the TV is a Sony 5.1 receiver. The Sony receiver gets its audio signal from the Vizio TV via HDMI ARC. When I view any 4K HDR source material (for example, Ozark on Netflix which is 4K Dolby Vision, or The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime which is 4K HDR), the audio signal decoded by my receiver is only 2.0 PCM. When I press "INFO" on my TV's remote, the TV displays "Stereo" for the audio source quality. It's as if the Apple TV 4K isn't sending me a 5.1 source signal. If I choose another 4K source that *isn't* HDR (for example, Planet Earth II on Netflix), the TV detects a Dolby Digital audio source and passes it on to my receiver faithfully where it's decoded in 5.1 format. If I choose any of these sources using the Vizio's native Smartcast apps, the receiver always get a Dolby Digital audio signal. I've also tried to force the audio to 5.1 using the "Change Audio" setting. It doesn't seem to make a difference. Has anyone else run into something like this? I'm trying to determine if this is a problem with the Apple TV 4K or my Vizio TV set. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Sep 2019 09:01 PM PDT Hi guys, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling YouTube app on ATV4K and my subscriptions are not the same as on my phone even when I use the automatic sign in through the app? Really weird, some are there but others are just random YouTube channels I have never subbed. Any help appreciated! [link] [comments]

Sony Dualshock 4 v2 buttons on Apple TV 4K (With TVOS 13) Posted: 26 Sep 2019 11:50 AM PDT Hi guys. Amazingly I cannot find any information about how to use the Sony DualShock 4 v2 (which I bought today and is my very first controller ever) outside of games. Since TVOS 13 this device is supported. I can use the joystick on the controller to navigate on the home screen and start apps or games with the "X button". So, I tried OceanHorn 2 and a few other games. Its amazing such difference there is, compared to playing on the standard remote lol, but .. I'm interested in knowing if theres some button combinations on the controller, which can do the same as on the remote? Like close a game or app fully, and return to homescreen or "go back button" in game menus? I'm still learning and discovering stuff, but if you know of some cool button combinations so I dont have to use the Apple TV 4K remote if I want to quit a game or app. Thanks! [link] [comments]
After TvOS 13 Apple TV 4K will no longer wake up with remote Posted: 26 Sep 2019 05:25 AM PDT Apple TV 4K always woke up when I clicked a button on the controller prior to the update. I have to keep unplugging the power cable to Apple TV to get it turn on. This never happened with the previous OS. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Sep 2019 12:40 PM PDT Hello, I connect my ATV 4 (not 4k) to the TV through HDMI, and then connect the TV to a Vizio 2.1 soundbar through optical. Should I leave the "audio format" settings as "auto" or "Dolby 5.1"? What I noticed is if I leave it as "auto", the soundbar indicates that no Dolby signal was received. If I set it to "Dolby 5.1", the soundbar does indicate Dolby signal received. Is it better to have the ATV send out Dolby signal and let the soundbar decode, or is it better to let the ATV do the work and keep the setting as "auto"? [link] [comments]
Multi-User Support with Purchased iTunes Ccontent Posted: 26 Sep 2019 05:24 AM PDT With all of the frustration over multiple profiles, the biggest inconvenience I see is sharing purchases across profiles. As the head of the family, my wife and kids should be able to see all the shows I've purchased on their own accounts (with the exception of kids, which should respect parental controls and only show those which I've rated them to see). We live in a world where Apple TV+ access, Channels purchases, and all of these other services Apple is pushing are shared across the family. Why shouldn't my iTunes purchases? It seems that Apple's previous bread and butter model has become outmoded, which is frustrating since I've spent thousands of dollars over the years purchasing content for it. It doesn't seem like Apple should punish its loyal customers with families for purchasing movies instead of subscribing to services. [link] [comments]
Fox Sports App crashing on startup Posted: 26 Sep 2019 11:08 AM PDT Tonight is the first 4k NFL broadcast and its only available via streaming on the Fox sports app on Apple tv 4k and some roku 4k boxes. My problem is every time I open up the fox sports app (not fox sports go) on my 4k apple tv running tvos 13, the app crashes immediately. I have reinstalled the app and restarted the apple tv. Is anyone else having this issue or know of a workaround? I would like to watch the game tonight in 4k. Edit: /u/mjrengaw figured out a workaround

[Help] Apple TV 4k OLED C8 HDMI Flickering Fiasco Posted: 26 Sep 2019 02:34 PM PDT Hey all, Having problems with Apple 4k TV and OLED C8. I'm at my wit's end right now and messaging as a last resort since I can't seem to find the same exact problem and solution online. Hopefully this will help others. I'm currently using Monoprice certified premium cables: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GCGKI3O/ ATV4k is connected to 3' cable to Denon x1400h which outputs a 6' cable to C8. Firmware for everything is up to date. ATV4k's UI is set to 4K 60 SDR 4:4:4, match content and frame rate set to on. I'm experiencing random bursts from time to time of HDMI signal loss -- to the picture frame showing the 'no signal' screen -- to quick screen flickers to which when the signal comes back, the small right hand window indicating HDR/Dolby vision turns back on for the content. When I say random, this issue can happen 20 minutes in watching something Dolby Vision related or just seconds after turning on the ATV. What I've discovered: Chroma 4:4:4 is unstable with my current set up. When I drop the Chroma down to 4:2:0, it's completely stable. Never encountered any of these disturbances. No problem with DV, HDR viewing. Even when 4:4:4 seems stable, one of the major factors that may cause the flickering debacle is when (1) it comes back from DV to SDR. Another, (2) maybe during a watch of something on Netflix in DV, it'll just start with a flicker or two, stabilize, or have just flicker fiasco until I switch the chroma back to 4:2:0 or restart ATV. So if I wanted to stay at 4:2:0, it's fine, sure, but I'm missing out on extra bit depth and for what I have, should have no issue with it. I've come to the conclusion that Dolby Vision isn't the problem. Since this issue can still occur just by turning on 4:4:4 in SDR. Either just in the ATV settings or eventually on viewing those beautiful aerial screensavers. So, the problem is Chroma 4:4:4. With these HDMI cables, 4:4:4 should be no problem for it. What else I've tested: This issue was occurring through my receiver, so I checked a direct connection from ATV to TV and was still happening. This leaves 3 possibilities: (1) HDMI cables, (2) ATV itself, or the (3) TV.
In the time of all this massive testing, the ATV has been powered by a daisy-chain of power surge protectors. So maybe power could be a problem since we're talking 4K 60 4:4:4 for such a little box. This morning, I removed it from the daisy-chain (I mean, I do get the fact that daisy-chaining is not the best idea anyway for clean power). Now the ATV's connected to the dedicated battery back up. I have yet to test how well it performs now since I'm at work. What I plan to do soon: I don't have a dedicated 4K player yet. That's on it's way to me but can't test anything until next week. In this test, I'll check to see how these cables work on 4K Dolby Vision 24hz. I'm assuming that with DV enabled, the chroma shifts to 4:4:4 but please correct me if I'm wrong. I do realize 4K 60 4:4:4 is much beefier than 4K 24 4:4:4 so it may be ineffective to check with other sources. I understand that with 4K 60 4:4:4, it nearly maxes out the HDMI bandwidth at around 17 something Gbps so maybe the cables themselves are being throttled too much while on those ATV settings. Thanks for taking the time to read through my week's first-world misery. Any and all help is massively appreciated. [link] [comments] |
