PSA: Calibrate your steps/distance for improved fitness tracking

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 03:17 AM PDT

For those who have setup their watch from new or this is their first Apple Watch you need to calibrate it so it knows how big your stride is, both walking and running. This will give you improved workout accuracy.

    From https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204516

Calibrating your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy

You can calibrate your Apple Watch to improve the accuracy of your distance, pace, and calorie measurements. Calibrating your watch can also help it learn your fitness level and stride, which improves accuracy when GPS is limited or unavailable.

    Check your settings

To make sure that your Apple Watch can get the information it needs, check these settings on your iPhone:

    1. On your iPhone, open the Settings app.
    2. Tap Privacy > Location Services.
    3. Make sure that Location Services is turned on.
    4. Scroll down, then tap System Services.
    5. Make sure that Motion Calibration & Distance is turned on.
    6. Continue with the steps below.

    Calibrate your Apple Watch

    1. While wearing your Apple Watch, go to a flat, open outdoor area that offers good GPS reception and clear skies.
    2. If you have Apple Watch Series 2 or later, you just need your Apple Watch. If you have Apple Watch Series 1 or earlier, bring your iPhone for GPS. Hold your iPhone in your hand, or wear it on an armband or waistband.
    3. Open the Workout app. To start, tap Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run. To set a goal before starting, tap 📷.
    4. Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes.

If you don't have time to finish the workout, you can complete 20 minutes over multiple outdoor Workout sessions. If you work out at different speeds, you should also calibrate for 20 minutes at each of the speeds that you walk or run.

Whenever you walk or run outside using the above steps, your Apple Watch continues to calibrate the accelerometer by learning your stride length at different speeds. Calibration can also improve the accuracy of your calorie calculations in the Workout app, and the calorie, distance, Move, and Exercise calculations in the Activity app.

Improve your Workout and Activity accuracy

Your personal information, such as your height, weight, gender, and age, is one of the things your Apple Watch uses to calculate how many calories you burn and more.

    Reset your calibration data

Here's how to reset your calibration data:

    1. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
    2. Tap the My Watch tab, then tap Privacy > Reset Fitness Calibration Data.

    AirUnleashed Review

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 04:43 AM PDT

(I also posted this on the Apple subreddit)

Like a lot of you folks, I was very excited by, and ultimately disappointed to discover, that Apple cancelled its AirPower product earlier this year. Soon after I was watching a review channel on Youtube (Unbox Therapy) and discovered this product, the AirUnleashed. When I upgraded my iPhone 7 to the XR, it felt like a no-brainer to me, so I picked up this product and have been using it for a couple of weeks. Here's my experience so far:

    Pros

As an owner of an iPhone XR, 2nd Generation AirPods, and an Apple Watch 2, my travel bag tends to get pretty tangled with all the cables and chargers I lug around. Especially because, on long trips, I also tend to bring my MacBook and iPad Air. Having a three-in-one charger has reduced the number of plugs I bring, and if I ever upgrade from an iPad Air to a Pro, I can probably get away with only bringing the AirUnleashed and a USB-C on trips with my devices. (I fully expect some people to take umbredge with how much technology I bring with me on trips, but I tend to use different devices for different purposes, so, please don't judge too harshly!)

The Watch and AirPods connect easily and instantenously when placed on the charging pad of the AirUnleashed. The Unleashed comes with a little divet in which you can place the Apple Watch, and has two coils on either side for either two iPhones or an iPhone and AirPods. However, the right side is a smaller coil, and to be honest, at this point I've never even tried to charge my phone on that side because it fits so well on the left side of the Apple Watch.

While I'm under the impression that inductive charging is slower than with using a lightning cable, I've not noticed any slowness with charging my devices. On the contrary, they are fully charged when I'm ready to use them. I've also not noticed any heat issues - the reason the AirPower was cancelled - except to say that I can detect faint traces of warmth on my watch and AirPods if they've been charging for a while. However, when they reach 100%, they stop receiving such a strong current and feel cool to the touch when I pick them up off of the charging pad.

Lastly, I consider the look to be a big advantage. AirUnleashed looks very much like the cancelled AirPower. It is unmarked on its surface (no "+" sign to tell you where to put your device) and the bottom is made of grey felt which presumably keeps it from sliding off the table as easily. It looks and feels like an Apple product, which is certainly nice.

    Cons

As a few people have noted, it can sometimes be a challenge to get the iPhone to charge when you put it down on the pad. It needs to be placed in a specific area, or else the coils won't begin to do their work. I've found that putting my phone down on the pad tends to be about 50-50 in terms of starting to charge. However, what I normally do is place the phone high up on the pad and then slide it downwards until I feel the telling vibration that indicates a charge is occuring. In other words, I find that it's actually way, way easier to charge my phone when putting it on the pad while lying down in my bed next to where I charge my devices than I do when I'm standing up. However, my little slide trick works very nearly every single time, and I no longer worry about misaligning my phone and failing to charge.

That said, there have been a couple fo times when it has taken 3+ attempts to get the phone to connect. I would suggest that anybody who uses this product should tap their screen to make sure the charge is actually occuring.

The only other "con" I would describe is the wait in receiving the device. I opted for the free shipping option, and watched through the tracking website as the AirUnleashed slowly made its way from Hong Kong to Canada, and then across the country to my home in Toronto. I could have paid for faster shipping, though, so I'm not really complaining.

    Overall

I am very satisfied with this purchase, especially because I registered on their website before I ordered the device, and was pleasantly given a pretty decent discount offer in order to complete the transaction. I have reduced the clutter of my bedside table, and I no longer have to pack as much when I go on trips. While it is certainly not "Apple level" in terms of what it does and how it works, it looks great, and it does what I paid for it to do.

Honestly, I like this product so much, I picked up a second one a week later for my wife. Anybody who has clutter issues, and who owns the right devices, would likely enjoy this product.

    Note

I just wanted to add one more thing… I know that lately there have been a bombardment of these kinds of posts from shady Redditors who are probably shills for the companies that make the products. Please feel free to stalk my Reddit history - I am a teacher and a tech enthusiast who lives in Toronto, definitely not a shill. That said, your mileage may vary.

    AppleWatch Notifications not popping

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 07:27 AM PDT

Hello, after updating to watch OS 6.0 I've experienced that my messenger/messages notification doesn't show or vibrate on my apple watch series 3. In addition, if and when they pop up they are usually delayed on my iPhone, meaning I will receive a message on my apple watch but at the same time after checking my phone to respond it doesn't show straight away but after 5 seconds delay. I've re paired my apple watch to my iPhone and I have the same problem.

Anyone else experiencing these problems and is there a potential fix to this?

edit: Grammar fixes, English is hard okay.

Facebook Messenger app do not display notification since WatchOS6

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 04:30 AM PDT

Someone can relate? My phone still receive notification as usual but I do not receive them on my watch anymore. I tried deleting the app from the phone and made a fresh install, I verified the notification section on my watch and everything is fine, it's the only app not showing notification (also the watch app work just fine).

    Series 3 vs 4/5

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 05:46 AM PDT

First post here :) So I'm interested in buying an Apple Watch but I don't know which to get. The series 3 costs 290$ in Canada right now and the series 4/5's are more around 500$. Any advice? Is the 4/5 worth it? I'd use it for tracking workouts, music, all that. Thanks in advance !

    Pinned faq?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 01:36 AM PDT

Mods, any interest in a pinned faq? Stuff like:

    • Activity badges not visible after upgrade
    • watchOS6 not yet available for lower series watches
    • restarting phone and watch to fix issues (notifications etc)

    Etc

    Thanks.

Does the uneven backlight (light bleed) have been fixed (S5)?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 03:45 AM PDT

Last year it was all over this sub with the « light bleed » on the S4. I understand that light doesn't bleed on a oled screen but it looks very similar to it on dark background (not black) in a dark room with the brightness pretty high.

As this been fixed on the S5?

Edit: for reference, here an example of the S4 I found in a previous post: https://imgur.com/gallery/RLI9LyS

In old news to the rest of you, this little wrist comp is surprisingly useful.

    Apple Watch S5 Burn In

    Posted: 23 Sep 2019 09:50 PM PDT

Hi guys - I just received my S5 today. What are the chances the 'always on display' will eventually burn in. Any idea if the software does anything to minimise this?

My mom's Apple Watch screen became detached from the body due to an expanding battery. Apple is charging her $200 for the repair. Do we have any options?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 06:26 AM PDT

As the title says, the watch screen detached from the body due to an expanding battery. So, even though the watch is outside warranty coverage (it was bought in March 2018), the issue is obviously not something she's at fault for.

I just want to hear from other people who've experienced the same thing. If she's to argue and insist that the repair should be free, what are her odds of actually getting it repaired for free?

Watch OS 6 iphone alarms don’t go to watch and text messages always goto both phone and watch

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 06:23 AM PDT

Basically what the title says. With the new iOS updates and watchOS updates, my iPhone alarm no longer rings on the watch giving me the option cancel or to snooze.

Additionally text and calendar alerts always go to both devices roughly at the same time instead of only one as before.

    Is anyone else experiencing this?

I've tried cycling the various settings on and off and power cycling of the watch and the phone.

    Charging on the go

    Posted: 24 Sep 2019 06:21 AM PDT

I occasionally travel for business and I have been honing my carry-on device charging kit, which nowadays is basically some lightning cables and the power adapter for my MacBook, but I don't want to carry an entire cable just for my watch for the rare times when I will need to charge it on the go. I've seen a few battery packs that have a watch charger on them, but I don't know if they're any good. Has anyone out there found a good solution to this?

Fixed my series 5 battery drain - Here's how i did it

    Posted: 23 Sep 2019 07:04 PM PDT

So my series 5 apple watch was draining like 1 present every few minutes and knew something was wrong. So I factory reset the watch without restoring the backup, turned off the noise app because I heard it drains the battery, turned off the walkie talkie app because someone here heard it drains the battery and only installed apps I actually used instead of having every app on there. I was worried something like ETA could be killing the battery or something.

I Left it with the screen off paired to my phone for 9 hours last night side by side with my series 4 and both had a 12 percent battery drain. Charged it up to 100 at 9:40 am to 100 and it's 10pm now at 43 percent. I used the watch like normal with raise to activate screen and stopwatch complication and very satisfied with the battery life now!! My series 4 would normally be around 50 plus percent by now, so I know there's no more battery draining going on with my watch. I have no idea if the noise and walkie talkie app are draining the battery and I'll probably turn them back on after a future update comes out for watch os. No indexing needed :)

For the first time, with watchOS 6, I feel like I can't decide on a watch face because of so many options. Curious to know what most people use & why

    Posted: 23 Sep 2019 10:11 AM PDT

I've had my Apple Watch since the Series 2 came out and upgraded to the S4 back in the spring. I settled on Infograph for daily use and found it to be great, especially with using green as the color. Then watchOS 6 came out. Colors are gone if you use anything besides white or black on most faces, but now there's a lot more faces added! I'm sort of paralyzed by indecision.

I've been giving Meridian a test run for the past week. I like it, but feel like it's missing something? Modular Compact doesn't do it for me. I feel like it is short a complication slot. I like California but I think it's more of a 'formal' face and I'd like to reserve it for special occasions. Anyhow, I know I'm overthinking the entire thing, but it led me to wonder what the general feel is in the community.

What face are you using, why, and if it's limited in Complication slots, what is your #1 complication you picked? For me it's Carrot, followed by Date / Fantastical, and Messages.

    AOD faces

    Posted: 23 Sep 2019 08:41 PM PDT

Anyone else think it would be great if we could have separate faces for the AOD? For example, I use Siri face, but would love a simple clock face for the AOD. Maybe a future feature for WatchOS 7?
