Posted: 22 Sep 2019 05:03 PM PDT I don't even know why I'm writing this, but I feel like a lot of people can relate to the shock they felt when they saw how well old MacBooks run. A little backstory: About two months ago, my Windows laptop (maxed out Dell Precision M3800 from 2014), started having issues with the wifi. It would constantly disconnect, and in the end it flat out stopped working. I used it with an ethernet cable, but for portability, it really wasn't ideal. Then I remembered that we still had my mother's 2012 MacBook Air. She had planned to use it for work and bought it brand new, (also maxed out; i7, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD) but she never really ended up switching to MacOS for work. She mostly used it to web browse. After a few years of use, the battery went completely flat. It wouldn't run unless plugged in, and it ran unbelievably slowly. What was happening was that the system didn't detect a battery, so it was throttling the machine severely. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when my Dell laptop's wifi called it quits. I decided to order some crappy off-brand battery from eBay for my mom's MacBook and give it a spin. It came a few days ago, and I replaced the old one. I half didn't expect it to even turn on, because a. it was probably a knockoff battery, and b. I'm not the handiest of people. To my surprise, it came on. Now, my mother had not once in her whole time with the computer updated the software, so it was still running OS X 10.7 Lion. As wonderfully as it ran, I could not possible use the computer with that OS today, so I installed Mojave. After Mojave was installed, the thing ran like it was fresh out of the box. System apps launched instantly, the touchpad and all of its gestures were silky smooth, the UI ran without a single frame drop. I'm even getting over 5 hours of battery life, consistently. It was just amazing. This 2012 MacBook that cost half of what my previous machine from 2014 had cost, was making my old computer look like a clunky, jittery mess. I've been using this computer for about a week now, and I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed with Apple's dedication to supporting older machines, and not just supporting them, but keeping them snappy. I'm sure that as long as I can at least patch a recent OS onto this computer, I will keep using it. Thanks for reading my pointless spiel. [link] [comments]
2018 MBP trackpad feels "hollow" compared to 2019 Air Posted: 22 Sep 2019 04:46 PM PDT Hi MacBook fam, Wanting to get back into the MacBook family, I got a 2019 Air a few days ago. I ended up needing more horsepower, so I exchanged it for the the 2018 4TB Pro. Immediately, I felt like the trackpad on the 2018 didn't have as much "oomph" as the Air did. Are they supposed to feel the same? The 2018 feels and sounds hollow, definitely different than the Air. I found a thread about this same issue from earlier this year where a sound comparison was made between their 2018 Pro and a 2018 Air, and mine sounds exactly the same as that one did. Should I switch it or is this normal? Thanks for reading! [link] [comments]
Has anyone used an eGPU on a 2016-19 MacBook Pro for gaming? How is it? Posted: 22 Sep 2019 09:57 PM PDT Yes, I know. "Don't game on a Mac. They're not meant for that." I recently sold a gaming laptop that I couldn't reasonably use for school (too hot, too power inefficient) and I'm looking to buy a 2016-2019 MacBook Pro 13" and an eGPU with an RX 480 in it. That way, I can have the thin, portable design of the MBP with good battery life and the power of an RX 480 when I come home and fire up Boot Camp. Has anyone been using a setup like this? Any warnings, tips, etc? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments]
Using Macbook Pro 13in while charging Posted: 22 Sep 2019 09:16 PM PDT This may sound dumb but is it safe to use the laptop while charging? Just got the laptop and don't wanna damage it. [link] [comments]

2019 15" MacBook Pro left speaker is rattling Posted: 22 Sep 2019 07:21 PM PDT Im not completely sure when this started but I have only had the laptop for about 2 months and now the left speaker is rattling when listening to stuff. It almost sounds like a loose screw or something inside the laptop but I am not sure. The speaker may be blown out but that wouldn't really make sense since I've rarely used the speakers. Has anyone else had this problem with the 2019 MacBook? [link] [comments]

[Question] Macbook Air 2017 Battery life Posted: 22 Sep 2019 04:56 AM PDT I'm only getting around 6h out of a full charge. My battery life is still good (96%), and the only tasks I'm doing are: Word, Internet (Chrome) and WhatsApp. Background programs are: f.lux and OneDrive. I see some people getting 10-12h out of there machine. Is there a way for me to optimise mine for a longer battery life? [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Sep 2019 10:59 AM PDT Hello, Hoping someone knows what a going on with my macbook! I just gave my screen a clean, and the spray that didn't hit the screen raind down on the keyboard (my fault, stupid I know) The keyboard now doesn't work at all and the screen is opening up apps on it's own and the speakers are playing that sound for the delete key over again. It was only the smallest bit of spray, how could it have messed up this badly??? What do I do? Many thanks [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Sep 2019 06:57 AM PDT Hey all, I just bought a late 2008 Macbook unibody, and I swapped the optical drive for an SSD. I used the Macos Mojave Patcher to install Macos onto the SSD, and it installed perfectly. But, when I go to set up my computer, the trackpad or keyboard do not work. I also have El Capitan installed on my hard drive inside the machine. The trackpad and keyboard work perfectly fine everywhere else. Any recommendations? Thanks [link] [comments]

MacBook Pro Stuck on "Starting Internet Recovery" Screen Posted: 22 Sep 2019 08:24 AM PDT So, I have a Macbook pro that has been on this screen for over 30 minutes. At this point, I would just like to restart the computer and boot it regularly. Is there a way to get off of this screen? Is it safe to just press the power button while it's on the screen? Thanks for any help. [link] [comments]

Macbook Pro battery stickers (A1398, EMC 2881) Posted: 22 Sep 2019 03:22 AM PDT Hey r/macbook! I have replaced my battery after 5 years of use, but the first replacement battery didn't quite work out from iFixit, so I asked for a replacement for the replacement (lol), and they gladly sent me a new one. I'm charging it as I'm writing this post (first charge, just replaced it). The battery has two transparent stickers on it, one on the bottom over the glue strips (should be removed before installing) and the other on the top, which holds the cells (6) together, which makes it easier to install into its place. After having had problems last time, I am somewhat hesitant to glue this one in before I see it if works correctly. My question would be the following: Does having both stickers on while using the computer pose a fire hazard / safety risk? TG Pro reports battery temperatures around 30 C now (27 C at the moment), which makes me think it should be okay for a week or so. What do other, more experienced members think of this? Also, at what temperatures does macbook pro batteries usually operate? Thank you for your patience and answers in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Sep 2019 03:05 AM PDT I have a Macbook pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) 2,9 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and I want to get a SSD to be the main disc with my current HDD to be used a storage. I dont really use the CD-ROM and can use the space to have the SDD. Is this something I can do myself? Or should do myself? Or any other advice? [link] [comments]
