Macbook pro 13" early 2015 video freeze when playing h264 content with acceleration Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:05 AM PDT I have a strange problem that started a month ago, where every time I watch h264 video content with acceleration enabled (mostly in browser), the video on the machine freezes. I can move the cursor around, but nothing except the mouse cursor is rendered (all other windows and the topbar is frozen). Audio keeps playing, so it seems that the reset of the system actually still work, but I can't interact with anything. Only remedy is a hard reset. Most of the time I also get visible video tearing / glitches that has also freezed. My first thought was GPU overheat, so I did a thermal re-paste of the machine, but still didn't help. I am kind of surprised that both the CPU cores and the iGPU hits 100C+ easily under load, but that seems to be common for these machines. Apple diagnostics claims no error on the machine. Easiest way to reproduce it for me is to run Chrome or Firefox, with the h264ify plugin (to fallback youtube to h264 video instead of VP8/9), and play a video on youtube for approx 5-10 minutes, and it crashes in all attempts. I've also had it happen when playing video in mediaplayer apps (Plex), but it's not as prominent as in the browser. I'm running 10.14.6 and also did a reinstall over my current installation (not a clean install), in hopes that it was corrupted video drivers that caused it, but it didn't help. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't find anything similar on the web, but then again, most people I guess don't use the h264ify plugin and are happy with maxing out their CPU when watching youtube :) Or is anyone, with the same machine (and macOS version) as me, up for testing this out to see if it is isolated to my machine? Will Windows OS on eSSD on a macOS void Apple warranty’s? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 10:55 PM PDT I loaded Windows and Bootcamp on my Samsung T5 SSD and now using a Windows 10 OS on my drive. Just wondering will that void my warranty? If anything it's safer than just using it on Bootcamp. Kind of wondering if that was a smart move or not. I am new to laptops. Haven't used computers in years. [link] [comments] |
Strange Smudge on Screen of Brand New MacBook Pro 13" (2019) Posted: 26 Sep 2019 01:57 PM PDT I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" yesterday from the Apple Store and just noticed this weird "smudge" on the screen. I can only see it when the screen is off. I haven't used any type of cleaner on the screen that would have caused it. I've tried wiping it away with a microfiber cloth and it doesn't go away. I know it's trivial since it can only be seen when the screen is black, but this thing is brand new! Has anybody else had this issue? I'm considering exchanging for another one. [link] [comments] |
Some reasonably rigorous testing of throttling control on 2015 MBP Retina 15" with Volta Posted: 26 Sep 2019 01:07 PM PDT I'm been trying to squeeze the most performance possible out of my 2015 MBP Retina 15" 2.8gHz i7. Running Mojave 10.14.6. I use it most often for video editing, so the LOUD fans and constant heat issues are a problem when rendering video. After some googling yesterday I found Volta, which allows the user to switch Turbo Boost on/off, limit total wattage to the CPU, and undervolt the processor, among some other things. (It has a "Performance" toggle, but offers no information anywhere about what that toggle actually does.) I think the developer is a redditor... u/caa82437, can you offer any info? So I ran a bunch of tests yesterday to see if I might improve my render speeds. Here's what I tried - Geekbench 4, and Cinebench 20. And a FCPX share of a 1080p/60fps 5 minute video at H.264 and "Better Quality" settings. (I chose "Better Quality" because I understand that the "Faster Encode" relies more heavily on the Intel GPU than the CPU to process.) During each of the tests I monitored the CPU's clock speeds and temperature with Intel Power Gadget. The results were mixed. Turning the Turbo Boost OFF generally resulted in slower processing on all three tests. Makes sense. Temperatures hovered right about 99C and the processor often throttled down as low as 1.2gHz. Turning the Turbo Boost ON generally resulted in processing roughly equal to the normal setup on my MBP. Maybe it's just the baseline. Turning the "Performance" mode ON with Turbo Boost OFF kept the clock speed pinned right on 2.8gHz, but it seemed the core utilization would fluctuate wildly. Perhaps "Performance" just pins the clock speed at one spot and messes around with the CPU percentages to always keep it running at a single speed? I don't know. It isn't mentioned anywhere on Volta's website. In any case, "Performance" didn't improve any of my benchmarks. But no processor throttling was evident, anyway. Turning "Performance" and Turbo Boost both to ON kept the clock speed well above 2.8gHz. Usually in the 3.3 range. And it stayed up there the whole time. But the CPU utilization fluctuated wildly up and down. And the overall result was MUCH WORSE than anything else! So it appeared that the processor was running significantly faster, but whatever was happening under the hood wasn't helping anything. The benchmarks: Geekbench 4 test results (Higher=Better)
Cinebench 20 test results (Higher=Better)
Final Cut Pro Export (5 minutes 1080/60, H.264, Better Quality) (Lower=Better)
Conclusions:
Anyway, if anybody's found any good ways to help improve overall performance on this model MBP, let me know. (I did also experiment with Rugiarcarp's Turbo Boost Switcher, but wasn't able to get it to work at all with my system.) I've seen some videos showing that replacing the stock thermal paste on the CPU/GPU heatsink can bring about some small improvements, but I'd rather not disassemble the laptop until I have to do it someday to replace the battery. Is leaving my MacBook plugged in to the charger harmful? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 08:20 PM PDT Some nights I leave the charger in so my MacBook doesn't go to sleep while torrent client runs in the background. Is this harmful? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Sep 2019 07:32 PM PDT I just bought this macbook recently and its shut down randomly once or twice and not turning on until plugged in even with batter at 70% or higher since buying + updating, contacted apple support and whatever I did mightve worked but anyone else have this experience as it mightve happened earlier but I let my computer go to sleep first? Help with replacement process through apple costumer relations Posted: 26 Sep 2019 03:58 PM PDT How long did apple replace your MacBook? Hi guys I was wondering how long did apple take to approve a MacBook Pro replacement ? I live in Chile and I have been in contact with apple support through the phone after 3 topcase replacement I was moved to costumer relations and the whole MacBook was accepted to be replaced for a new one, after a month I don't have any news from it. The guy helping me said that the process has not been completed yet and it takes some time, that was send back in September 13th. Have any of you guys done a replacement through costumer relations ? If so how long did it take ?? Thanks and sorry for the bad english [link] [comments] |
Update 2010 Macbook running 10.9.5? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 03:45 PM PDT I currently have a 13" 2010 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.5. I've kept it in good condition, and despite some programs no longer being compatible with my OS, I haven't run into much trouble. I mostly use it to type papers and take notes for school, some iMessage, but no gaming or CAD software on it. Would it be a terrible idea to update to the current OSX? I had it looked at by a computer store a few years back for some minor hard drive issues and they recommended that I don't update the OS X any further, but recently even google chrome has been crashing frequently enough that it's been a pretty large obstacle just to open google docs to take notes. I know that my best option would be to purchase a new laptop, but as an undergrad student working only a few contractor positions a year, I can't really afford a new one at the moment. TLDR: Would updating my 2010 macbook pro from 10.9.5 to the current OS X brick my computer? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Sep 2019 08:57 AM PDT I am on the free trial for Parallel Desktop so I can use Windows. I downloaded the Netflix app on the Windows 10 and downloaded some movies and watched them offline but I noticed the fans ramped right up and my MacBook Pro started heating up and the movie was choppy. I heard Parallel is hard on macs because your laptop is in running 2 operating systems at once, where as Bootcamp I believe (not entirely sure) runs only 1 at once. So I've heard Bootcamp is the easier on your MBP and also faster because it only runs one OS at a time. Only thing is you have to reboot the MBP when switching (not that big of a deal). One thing also I heard it's smarter to install windows and only use Bootcamp on a external SSD? Any advice? Never really used Macs before or PCs in years for that matter. 2019 MacBook Pro i9 16 GB RAM 500 GB SSD Radeon 560x is what I'm running on. [link] [comments] |

Battery problem - 370 cycle count and it needs to be replaced Posted: 26 Sep 2019 11:14 AM PDT Hi, I have MacbookAir 2017 and recently have a problem with the battery. It shuts down at like 60% percent and mac is overheating. I run the diagnostic and it says that I need a new battery. I just want to check if battery is the real problem because i have only 370 cycle counts (in 2,5 years) and they say it lasts about 1000? Is there a way to make a better diagnostic and its overheating. I run the diagnostic and it says that I need new battery. I just want to check if battery is the real problem, I have only 370 cycle counts (in 2,5 years). Is there a way to make a better diagnostic? Thank you [link] [comments] |

How To Save Screenshots Directly Into Photos App? Posted: 26 Sep 2019 12:46 AM PDT Hello all, is there a way to save screenshots taken on the MacBook directly into the Photos App? I've only been able to save it into a specific folder eg desktop, documents, iCloud folder; but am trying to figure out how to save it directly into the Photos App. I work with both my MacBook and iPad simultaneously and what I'm doing now is airdropping my screenshots to my iPad. It works, but it's disrupting my workflow as it does take some time and airdropping it causes whatever app I'm using on my iPad to switch to the photos app. So I thought it would be easier to bypass this by saving the screenshots directly to the Photos App on my MacBook. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
