I bought a Macbook with a destroyed Retina display for a very low price and used it to make the first ever iPad Pro/Macbook hybrid! [Video in description]

    Posted: 04 Sep 2019 05:00 AM PDT

It's done! Following up on a recent post that I made on this sub, my iPad/Macbook hybrid is complete. The method involved defusing the broken LCD screen and backlight from the upper portion of the MacBook's clamshell, modifying the retina display driver, attaching a magnetic iPad case in-place of the retina display and putting everything back together. In regards to software, I'm using Catalina's 'Sidecar' to wirelessly (bluetooth) mirror the once-existent Retina display and 'keyboard maestro' to establish the initial connection to the iPad upon booting up.

Not in the video below is a demonstration of 1keyboard being used to re-route the Macbook's keyboard as an input device for the iPad when Sidecar is disabled.

I think I'll make a video documenting the full process soon.

Any ideas for a name for the hybrid?

Here's a link to it in action:

Apple should create a privacy focused search engine.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2019 04:33 PM PDT

(Saw a comment about this earlier) As Apple switches to a more heavy software focused business approach, I think Apple has a fantastic opportunity and position to make a privacy focused competitor to Google (something like DuckDuckGo but developed with the resources of a bigger company like Apple).

It would be nice for Apple to offer iPhone Upgrade Program incentives to Apple Card customers

    Posted: 04 Sep 2019 05:31 AM PDT

It's that time of year again! We're less than a week away from the unveiling of this year's collection of new iPhones. For the last two years, I've used the iPhone Upgrade Program (iUP) to get the new iPhone. There are many perks of iUP, but my favorite perk has to be the pre-approval process for returning iUP customers that allows for a speedy, two-click preorder process when the clock hits midnight PST.

My biggest problem with iUP is the annual hard-pull on my credit report for my new iPhone. It seems extremely excessive to have a new hard-pull EVERY SINGLE YEAR for a new iPhone, especially when you can avoid this by upgrading with your carrier. This year it's particularly irritating when many just received a hard-pull for their new Apple Card.

It would be great to see Apple offer special incentives for iUP for Apple Card customers. I'm not well-versed in the world of finance, but this incentive could possibly be offered a few ways:

    1. Current Apple Card customers: Allow these customers to add the interest-free iUP loan to available credit on Apple Card. (I know that many would be unhappy with this loan taking up a significant portion of their available credit — however for those with higher credit limits this might not be as big of an issue).

    2. Begin financing iUP loans through Goldman Sachs and offer no hard-pull for existing Apple Card customers

    3. Offer an Apple Card + iUP package for customers looking to get Apple Card and iUP with a singular hard-pull

Regardless of Apple's strategy, I think it's time for Apple to recognize the burden of yearly hard-pulls on customers' credit reports and offer a system where returning iUP customers could be pre-approved for their new loan with less of an impact on their credit. The benefits of iUP are great (can order through Apple every year, AppleCare+ included in loan, hardware service options directly from Apple, etc.), but I definitely think there is room for Apple to improve.

Would love to hear any other ideas in the comments!

Switched to Safari from Chrome about 5 months ago. Here is my feedback.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2019 12:34 AM PDT

I ended up switching my default browser from Chrome to Safari in an effort to secure my data and in addition to privacy concerns with Google as a company and browser. With Safari as my new default browser, I'd like to provide some feedback that would make browsing the web more enjoyable for me. These are a few notes that I have captured during my use with Safari:

    • Lock icon being centered in input allows for accidental clicks; move to left most area in input
    • If a tab is pinned and a new tab is created with the same URL, Safari will just return the pinned tab. A new tab is not created.
    • Add right-click option for duplicate tab
    • Down arrow navigation on autocomplete drop down option followed by right arrow does not populate query into input
    • Down arrow navigation on autocomplete drop down option followed typing does not add the highlighted option into the input; does not allow for continued addition to query
    • When typing a URL, the first option should be the main domain and then history containing long tail URLs
    • No gifv (webm) support

    The State of Siri

    Posted: 04 Sep 2019 06:24 PM PDT

With Siri's 8th cake day coming up, I think it's time we had a discussion on her current level. As of iOS 8 , Siri finally learned the answer to 2+2, and how to respond to her name being called.

Fast forward 5 generations of software, and Siri is still under performing to Google Assistant by a mile. Is this due to Apple playing it safe once again, or is there just a lack of creative drive? Because there sure as hell is not a lack of data.

Hopefully Shortcuts is a step in the right direction. I would let Siri have full automation. It's simply giving commands, "Hey Siri open up Weather, take a screenshot and send it to my brother. Tell him we can't go out on the boat today."

TDLR: Siri should be better. Please give your best thoughts on new features and fixes!

    USB-Lightening Design Concept

    Posted: 04 Sep 2019 11:38 PM PDT

So I recently got an Apple HomePod this past week and I absolutely loved the design! I was thinking how cool it would be to have the same design concept (mesh fabric) from the "Power Cord" for our USB-Lightening cables. I'd imagine they would be much more reinforced and durable unlike the current design ! Any thoughts on the matter?
