TIL that the Apple Pencil 2 is water proof

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 12:03 PM PDT

Today, I accidentally learned that my Apple Pencil 2 is water proof. At first, I thought I lost my Apple Pencil 2 because it doesn't show on the widget of accessories connected to the Bluetooth. I was looking for it for like half an hour, and its not detected by my iPad Pro. It turns out, I dropped it on the toilet (I placed my iPad Pro earlier at the towel rack above the toilet bowl).

When I saw it, I felt like my heart sunk, thinking I just wasted my $129. I was afraid to use it again because it might short circuit. I spend an hour searching the net, to see if the new Apple Pencil 2 is water proof but to no avail. No one seesms to have an information. After 6 hrs of contemplation , I decided to use it again (after wiping it thoroughly with alcohol), and voila, it still works!

TI(also)L that Bluetooth does not connect under water.

    My thoughts: Notability vs Goodnotes

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:13 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I know a lot of you still go through that annoying decision when it comes to finding the right note-taking app and I came to make it even more annoying.

For context: I'm a pre-service teacher (10 months away from graduating as a Science Teacher), so I'm in University and I also do tutoring on the side so I use my iPad Pro 11" (With Apple KB) alongside my MBP for both Work and study. I originally started with OneNote many years ago .. Then moved to Notability when I got my iPad Pro, used it for a while and gave Goodnotes a try. So I figured I may as well give my thoughts/experiences to help those who are maybe trying to find the right one out of these two. Also to highly suggest checking OneNote, Noteshelf 2, Zoomnotes, Bear etc (I haven't yet but heard their great).

    Notability

    What I liked:

+ I love the smoothness of this app. It just glides through everything.. It feels so snappy and even when I import large PDFs it just feels like butter.

+ The split screen view is really handy, I don't find it as appealing on the smaller sized iPads ( <11") since it can feel too crammed but I imagine with the 12.9" iPP users it would be epic.

+ Very simplistic to use. Anyone can figure out how to use Notability and start writing.

+ The writing ink engine feels natural and really nice to use.

+ The gestures are so fluent and easy to use like swiping left for the note switcher.

+ The automatic backup as well as the different platforms (Google, Dropbox etc).

+ The Mac client is decent.

+ Typing in Notability is really good, you have bullet points, tabbing, favourite fonts etc.

+ Recording audio notes was surprisingly useful!

+ Being able to text and hand-write at the same time !!

What I didn't like so much:

    - I really dislike the interface of Notability. By interface, I mean the entire organisation system.. When you have a few notes its perfectly fine, but when you start to pile up a lot of notes it can get messy very quickly. I hate how I'm limited to only Divider --> Subject.. and I can't make any subfolders or anything. I just have a stack of subjects on the left and it gives me anxiety.

    - While the Mac client works, for the money they are asking for - I kinda expected it to be slightly better especially compared to the iPad app. It's not bad, it's just not the greatest.

    - The simplicity is a double edged sword - its great that its so easy and simple to use, but the limited customisation can sometimes be frustrating when you need/want it such as more inking options.

    + The highlighter.

    Goodnotes

    What I liked:

+ The organisation is REALLY nice (if you like it this way), you can make folders and sub-folders to your hearts content - it was a pleasure organising my notes this way. The design also felt very 'apple-like' and matched my Macs folder icons, a nice touch.

+ I found ink writing felt more natural and with the extra options that were offered I was able to find the right one.

+ I prefer the design interface overall of Goodnotes 5. I posted a link earlier and someone thought it was MS Word.. Which I really like. Goodnotes feels like I'm using a Digital notebook where as apps like Notability feel like I'm using ..Well an app.

+ Little shortcuts that made a difference to everyday note-taking .. Having saved different pen options, easily dragging in photos and what I LOVED was the "disable eraser when done" option - this is such an underrated feature.

    + The highlighter is great.

+ The customisation is unreal, you can download whatever template you want from the internet and use it, the amount of different styles of papers, covers etc is just crazy! It truly does let you make it feel like your own digital notebook.

+ The tabbing system is really nice and easy to just switch back and fourth - I preferred this over the split screen that Notability offers when using it on a small screen like an 11" as I prefer to use one note on the entire display.

What I didn't like so much:

    - The typing experience in Goodnotes just felt so disappointing. Every time I had to type (which is a lot), I would have to select a text box which isn't locked in the page and often when I'm scrolling down I'd accidentally move the text box and have to rearrange it every time.. I found it very distracting and basically ruined the experience for me. There is also no built in tabbing, bullet points.. It feels very "handwriting only".

    - The lack of a Mac app. GN4 was removed from the App Store as it was getting a re-design and the developers did put out a developer beta option for the Goodnotes 5 App.. It was decent and did the job but you could not even edit text on it !!! Also they have terminated the plan in favour of Project Catalyst (Apple's new app program).

    - It can sometimes feel laggy/jerky especially when scrolling through large PDFs.

    - Not being able to text and hand-write at the same time. Typing away - then pulling out the pencil, clicking on the Pencil icon to write then tapping the Text icon again and tapping the screen on the spot I was writing on. It takes a few extra seconds but it makes a difference when you do it so much.

TLDR: Honestly they are both such fantastic apps and you can't go wrong with either. If I didn't use my KB and just used this simply for note-taking ONLY then I'd stick with Goodnotes5. However, I use the KB and type a lot alongside with my Apple Pencil for taking notes.. In this case I found Notability just easier to use and more efficient, despite me much preferring the overall design, inking engine, organisation and customisation that Goodnotes 5 has to offer.

Question regarding video files on iPad (iOS 12 & iPad OS)

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:41 PM PDT

Hey guys! I recently got my iPad and want to know what the current best practice to watch video files on my iPad which I currently store on my PC is. I assume you would do it with VLC currently. For the people with iPad OS on their iPads already: is there any chance to go over files and use the built in videos app without using iTunes or something to sync?

    Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know of a CHEAPER alternative to this? Perhaps a way to reverse engineer it? For those unsure what this is it’s a charging stand for basically all iPads with the smart connector as it uses that to charge the iPad.

This happens only when charging my ipad.

    iPad College Accessories

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:05 AM PDT

Hey y'all! It seems like everyone is touting the same accessories these days. I was curious if anybody had some lesser known options or things that are useful. I am a college student and I also run a business, so I use my iPad all the time for all kinds of things.

My current set up is a Brydge keyboard (seems like our redditors hate it, but I love it), Apple Pencil with a silicon case, and a tempered glass screen protector. I also have 3 20,000 mah battery packs with usbc connection.

Now in the coming days, I plan to get a Lenovo yoga mouse, a Kanex iAdapt usbc hub (I love that it hugs the corner... I'll probably never take it off). I know I need to get an external hard drive of some kind.

Any advice for an external hard drive? Any mouse or usbc hub preferences apart from what I have mentioned? any lesser known accessories that you find useful?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I also have a water repellant neoprene laptop case that fits my iPad just right for when I'm carrying it in my backpack. Came with a neoprene bag that fits the charging cable, plus the lightning cable for my phone, and the backup batteries

Edit: also curious if anyone knows of a thin clear plastic case that is thin enough to fit with the brydge. Wasn't a deal breaker for me with the brydge, but in curious if there is something out there to help add protection

    Greenlaw Keyboard for iPad Pro?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 10:03 AM PDT

I've seen quite a few posts about keyboard suggestions for the iPad Pro 11", but I haven't seen anything about the Greenlaw keyboard. It seems like the perfect blend between the Logitech (good typing experience) and the Brydge (unlimited viewing angles, but without the worry of scratching on the clamps). It's also super cheap compared to the two described above. Anyone tried this keyboard?

Anyone having good results using the Lightning to VGA adapter for iPad 2018?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:36 AM PDT

I'm seeing very mixed reviews, most of them saying the iOS 11 update causes it not to work. Anyone have any first hand results for the more recent versions of iOS or iPadOS betas?

    Files/iCloud pdf organization (academy/science)

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 01:09 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am trying to organize my PDF files (papers/books) to be accesible on Mac and iPad. I really love finder/files for creating folder structure and tags. One problem which i have is that iPad files are not able to remember last opened page in pdf. Is this situation any better on iPad os? I am trying to avoid external software for organizing, but i am thankful for any general tips/experiences.

What Apple Watch, Airpods, iPad to get? Or wait.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 08:23 AM PDT

Big longtime Apple fan here. I'm tryna find out if I should go ahead and buy an Apple Watch 4 as of right now.

If so, what would be the all the differences between Hermes, Nike and regular one. Is it just the straps? Because I'm craving the Hermes' but I'm not sure if its worth it to shell out 1k for that. I saw many Hermes straps on eBay so if they're interchangeable I don't really see the point.

Also wondering, are straps between all series and models interchangeable?

Additionally, are we getting the 5th gen anytime soon, I know there's nothing official but any rumours, speculations, gossip, leaks about it? If we're getting that before next year I might just go ahead and wait it out.

I'm currently on an iPhone 4s on iOS 8.4.1 and no PC (Time to step it up, I know) and will be upgrading to the 2019 iPhone whenever it launches (Sept 22 I heard) and just recently bought the Touch Bar MacBook Pro. Looking to get AirPods as well but I do not know if AirPods 3 will release anytime soon as well.

Finally, regarding iPad, are there really many reasons to get an iPad nowadays? I believe I can do everything on the MacBook and new iPhone very comfortably, right? (Hpmf, I'm even doing everything from photo, to social media, to homework, etc on my 4s) I wouldn't really be willing to shell out for one of the newer iPads if really needed.

I researched and found that the 1st gen iPad is stuck on iOS 5.1.1 and has pretty much no apps, I read iPad 2 on 9.3.5 is hella slow. Not really looking for an iPad mini since its going to be pretty much the same size as 2019's Max / Plus version. What iPad to get?

Thanks for your help and tips!

Has anyone ever noticed cosmetic damages upon opening their brand new iPad?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 08:02 AM PDT

Just opened my new iPad and there are scratches on the back. Like fine etchings in the metal. And the cellular bar is wonky. One side isn't completely flush with the iPad. I can get a refunded discount but I'm worried this one's a lemon. I've purchased several Apple devices in the past (a few MacBook pros, two iMacs, one prior iPad and multiple iPhones) and they were all cosmetically perfect.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

The 2019 iPhone will have Apple Pencil Support. This probably means we will be seeing a new 2019 iPad Pro + a new Apple Pencil.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 03:14 AM PDT

I mean, the Apple Pencil will also be thinner or something. I cannot imagine using that big of an pencil on a tiny phone.

    Ipad applecare+?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:51 AM PDT

I am in the market for a new iPad Pro. Based off the expensive repair costs I am considering getting applecare+ also. However as a broke student I am unsure whether it is worth it or not? So my understanding is you are entitled to 2 replacement devices in the two years due to accidental damage. So hypothetically, after a year and a half of use the device is bound to have picked up some wear and tear...can one hypothetically break the screen on purpose and avail of a replacement for the required 50 euro?

Is the 2018 ipad worth it?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:59 PM PDT

Hey! The last ipad I had was an air when it came out and 4 months I sold it! Is the 2018 worth? I plan to take notes, play games, read some stuffs here and there. I was thinking about getting the iPad mini 5 because of the specs, but, the size is something that really concerns me!

Is it still worth buying an iPad Air (2013) in 2019?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:59 AM PDT

I'm reconsidering the idea of buying an iPad Air 2013. Lack of budget is the main cause why I'm not looking better models. I read about Apple support cancelation (there's not gonna be iOS13; iPadOS13 will be actual in September). So the last version of iOS is 12.4. For how long this device will still be usable? Jailbreak, would it help? Finally, I would appreciate some reviews of iOS 12 experience. Cheers!

Headphone Jack Adapter for iPad Pro 12.9 2018

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 05:17 AM PDT

As I heard so many bad reviews on Apple's own headphone jack adapter for iPad Pro (USB C) I ordered the Xiaomi alternative which seemed a good choice for the price based on reviews. Today I received my Xiaomi adapter and it's not working on the iPad. Does my iPad have a problem or there must be a requirement on the adapter to work with my iPad?

What adapter do you recommend to use?
