I've set up bootcamp on my mid 2015 MacBook and now I have no access to my MacOS, I can only boot into Windows 10.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 04:04 PM PDT

I've tried restarting to OS X (via the boot camp app on Windows 10) yet nothing I've tried worked.

Can you guys please tell me what to do?

    Air vs. Pro?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 06:02 PM PDT

Hello! This is my first time posting on Reddit and I just need some advice. I am entering college this fall and am looking to buy a new Mac within the next few weeks. I currently have a 2011 Air that's still kickin' but I just need something new for school. It is worth noting that I also own a 10.5" iPad Pro but still prefer a laptop for many tasks. Trying to be a paperless student!

    My choices are: MBA (+256gb SSD)/AppleCare - $1,398* MPB (+256gb SSD)/AppleCare - $1,614*

*(Note: prices based off of the current Back to School/Education pricing. Does anyone know exactly when this is ending?)

Basically, spending an extra $200 would get me a Pro which sounds like a no brainer but I'm incredibly indecisive. $200 is $200. I'm not sure if I'll even like using the touchbar. And is a Pro overkill? Most of my tasks consist of using the Google Suite, general web browsing, and playing The Sims and Minecraft (both of which, while slow, run on my 2011 MBA!).

Considering that I have the powerful iPad, the MBA is more than enough for me. But again... it's only a $200 difference between the Air and Pro and I am expecting either laptop to last me for four years of college and beyond.

If you read all of this, thank you so much! I have the tendency to be far too wordy sometimes. :')

Got a 2019 MacBook Pro. Is the trackpad supposed to feel extremely shallow?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 11:55 PM PDT

There's almost no travel at all when clicking on the trackpad, maybe quarter the travel distance the keyboard buttons have if not less. It is an extremely unsatisfying feeling. Also just a little above the bottom right and bottom left edges seem to be non-clickable. Is this normal or did I receive a lemon?

    Which MacBook Pro for college?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 11:35 PM PDT

Hi, long time windows user looking to make the switch to Mac. I'll be majoring in business but I am very interested in getting into video editing and music production down the line. I was wondering which MacBook Pro model would be the best for this? I can spend up to $2200, but would prefer to save money if I can and not go overkill on a 15" if I don't have to.

    MBP 1.4 vs 2.4 2019

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 11:26 PM PDT

I couldn't find a topic about this so remove if there is a similar one.

I can not decide which of the two is better suited for me. I wan't it to be a Pro version. The processor power is not the issue for me.

    The main question is:

Is 2 more Thunderbolt 3 connectors, better speakers, faster SSD, better cooling system and better internal GPU worth the 280e price tag.

    Force Touch with iTunes/Music App

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 01:01 PM PDT

I was skipping through songs recently and noticed that the force touch was a lot easier to click and gives a different feed back than a normal click. Its only when I skip forward or backwards in a song, anyone else notice this too?

Issues with my new 2019 MBP 15 i9...

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 06:41 PM PDT

First of all I fucking love this device--I was the same person who praised the butterfly keyboard hours ago. However, I am experiencing a few issues:

    • Popping sound coming from the logic board (I think right side of keyboard) when the device is stressed. I do not think this is due to the CPU not being cooled enough. I tested it with Prime95, all 8 cores at 100% while being at around 80 C--fans were pretty loud. I am using a package called osx-cpu-temp to monitor temperature (not sure about its accuracy though). So, the issue is not when the CPU is at full load, but when there is a sudden change in load. The pops happen the most between 50 C and 60 C, right when the CPU is ramping up and ramping down. I will test this a little bit more. First time I noticed this issue was when I git cloned a repo.

    • Screen flickering. I am not sure if this is related to the pops but during the popping is when I've only experienced the screen flickers.

    • Hinge creaks a bit when opening the device. Maybe the hinge is too tight. I can live with this though.

This is really unfortunate since I really love the device. Its performance is insane! I literally installed Docker within a few seconds! Like holy shit, my 2013 i5 HP laptop at work took me around 30 minutes to do this the other day--although it is Windows and a pretty old laptop, but still... I haven't tried building/compiling a huge project but I can see myself benefiting a lot from this device.

Oh well, trip to the Apple store I guess...

EDIT: Just found videos on Youtube with similar problem. Apparently, it happens when device temperature changes. F

What should I be aware of when taking my Mac to an unauthorized third party for repair?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 06:16 PM PDT

So the apple closest to me is... very far away and I can't ever schedule an appointment, besides, I'm also wary of them and their tendency to overcharge for services.

A while ago my speakers broke (note this is a 6 years old Mac that never had any problems) and I'm looking to getting this fixed. I went to a shop and the guy there seemed trustworthy enough.

He told me he would first clean everything and that might solve it, I mean, after 6 years there must be a lot of dust inside there. I'm thinking about taking my Mac there for repair but I want to know if there's any red flags I should look out for.

Besides paying close attention to what the guy is doing what can I do?

    macbook recommendation (software development)

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 05:23 PM PDT

I am looking to buy a macbook air / pro for college (starting my master's degree.) i am looking to get into software development for computer vision and machine learning stuff (especially in autonomous vehicles).

I dont have a problem with the storage space. i really like the design and feel like i'll be happy programming on it. Gaming laptops have less battery back up and hard to carry around... but yeah i don't really know. i'm confused. if someone in this field can give an opinion that'd be great.

MBP mid 2012 - which one in 2019?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 12:23 PM PDT

Hi all! I have a MBP from mid 2012. 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Macintosh HD Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB SSD 500 GB SATA disk

My computer is really slow and very heavy to carry. I have no idea which model to choose from. I mainly use it for school and maybe in the future for some video editing. I'm really conflicted whether to spend money on extra ssd storage, RAM or just go for the base MBP 2019 (I can't afford both RAM and extra SSD). Also I've no idea how I'll manage with 128GB when I'm used to 500GB. If I buy the new computer, should I just install it as a new computer and don't back it up to get all my photos and documents? Hope that makes sense? Because what's the point if I get a new computer and suddenly all my files and photos are converted too.

Also I want it to last for a couple of years. So should I invest in the MBP or MBA based on what I've told you?

    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

SSD Upgrade for MacBook Pro 13 2015, which SSD (m2/nvme) did you go with?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 09:25 AM PDT

I'm trying to figure out and narrowed down to Sabrent Rocket and Samsung EVO 970. The Rocket seems to be the overall performer from the thread posted on Macrumors with low power usage and cost. Any suggestion? Should I just go with the rocket and save up the extra cash as well?

Is there any difference in quality in Apple Keyboard 2 for the two variants?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 09:02 AM PDT

I am looking to purchase an Apple keyboard 2. Outside of the size difference is there any difference in quality between smaller and larger variants of the keyboard?

Hello! Is this some kind of factory defect or something? I am 100% sure nothing sharp caused this to happen as I have been handling this device with meticulous care since day 1. I just bought this 2 weeks ago.

FileVault encryption and selling a broken laptop - safe enough?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 12:32 AM PDT

I've got a 2018 MBP that had a bad day recently, suffered not only a cracked screen but also liquid damage. It powers up but never goes anywhere, and an external monitor just shows it booting to a grey screen with a cursor. I tried booting with T held down and a Thunderbolt cable to my new MBP to see if I could boot off the drive that way, but the new laptop just wants to use the old one as a source of battery charging.

Anyway, I'm planning on selling for parts for whatever I can get, but there are some files on my desktop and in my Documents folder that I'd rather not have floating around (tax forms, etc). I enabled FileVault encryption on day one. I know the ideal thing would be to format the drive but I don't think there's a good way to do that at this point. Given that the drive is fully encrypted, is there any real risk of selling the laptop as-is? I figure it's no worse than if I lost it or it was stolen.

Purchasing Dilemma: MacBook v MacBook Pro

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 10:04 AM PDT

Hey y'all. I've got a decision on my hands that I'd love some external subjective insight on.

I'm in the market to replace my current 2016 base 12" MacBook. I love everything about this laptop. It's the best machine I've ever used from a functional perspective and the form factor is incredible for me.

For a replacement I'm considering either a new entry-level MBP or a refurbished MacBook that upgrades me from an m3 processor to a dual-core i5. Idea there is that it will significantly lengthen the life of the machine I love but at a premium ($200) compared to buying a new MBP.

Whadya think? Is there something I'm not considering? I don't anticipate my needs changing in the next few years.
