New MacBook Air (Retina 13in 2018 model) heavy fan use, 212 degree CPU core (XRG). Something wrong?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:04 PM PDT

Short version: twice in the last 2.5 days the fans on my MacBook Air have gotten noticeably loud for an extended period of time, and according to the XRG app I downloaded, both my CPU Cores were running at or very near 212 degrees which seems like maxing out. This hasn't happened at all until 2 days ago. Should I be worried?

Longer: I bought this MacBook Air back in early July. I've barely noticed the fan--I've been pretty amazed at how quiet it is. That is, until 2 days ago. I placed it on top of an RFID scanning pad on a desk at work because there was no space elsewhere. Soon the fans were going as hard as they could. I downloaded XRG to see the details and the CPU temps were maxing out it seems. I eventually had to shut down because the fans weren't helping.

I actually did a google search beforehand to see if an RFID pad (this device) would have any effect on my computer, but didn't find anything negative, so I'm not sure if it caused the overheating or not.

This evening I had the laptop on my legs for about 45 min - 1 hour and the fans once again started working their hardest. I'd done this before without significant heat build up, so I'm not sure why it got so hot this time. Is Chrome typically a culprit in this situation?

I'm nearing the end of my AppleCare, so I'm a little concerned that this has happened twice when previously it didn't happen at all. DAE have suggestions or insights?

Ways to turn on MacBook without the PowerButton?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:59 PM PDT

Ways to turn on MacBook without the PowerButton?

This is a request of a really lazy person, but I wonder is there some neat way to do it?

Quick google search return some option which I cannot call neat: some combinations of buttons on the built in macbook keyboard, using an old usb-wired mac keyboard with a power button, soldering your own usb power button... All that sounds like a more difficult task then simply getting out the laptop from the shelf...

To give you some context. I have a large screen connected to my macbook (macbook pro, mid-2012 version) with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. The days when I move I mostly use iPad and Macbook really does act like a desktop. So because it's normally on a table stand shelf (see the screenshot), getting down to the power on button is a slight nuisance... So I wondered if there are any lifehacks to make this easier?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 06:23 PM PDT

Hi I just recently purchased a MacBook air 2019. I've been a windows guy eversince. I'm always using Microsoft PowerPoint and fond of using the DESIGN Ideas when creating my presentation. Sadly I can't see that option in my macbook. I'm using Microsoft office pro plus. Anyone familiar with this?

Any word on keyboard failures with the 4th gen "new material" butterfly keyboard? I am hoping to pick one up before the education promo is over and I haven't heard any more news about the 4th gen keyboards lately.

MBP early 2011 15 inch sparks when MagSafe is unplugged from port

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 06:59 AM PDT

    Need some help:

A few years ago my aunt gave me her Early 2011 MBP that had a bloated battery. Uninstalled the battery and used it plugged into the wall for about 2 years. I recently discovered that the MagSafe she gave along with it was a really bad fake, the fact that it lights up instantly when connected and makes big sparks when connected to an outlet suddenly made sense.

I purchased a refurbished MagSafe from a very reputable seller and its been working great. Next I decided it was time to buy a battery for this thing, and went to a very reputable repair shop who installed an original battery into my MBP. Also swept my board with a brush to get a bunch of dirt off. They told me to calibrate it by bringing it down to 15%, then up to 100% while on, and repeat.

Brought it home and did all the steps. Was excited to finally get back to my projects and plugged it back in when it was down to 15%. I turned my back and heard a pop, the light on my MagSafe was no longer on. I tried reconnecting it to no avail. Seller honored the warranty and gave me a new one.

Got home and plugged the new one in and took a nap. woke up and it was 100%. Pulled the connector from the port and it sparked! I freaked out. I cleaned the port with a cotton swab, and tried reconnecting with a wall socket this time as opposed to my desk extension. Light turned on, but when i disconnected it from the MBP it made a larger spark and left a burn on one of the pins in my laptop. cleaned it up with cotton and did one last test by plugging MagSafe into the laptop first, then to the wall. Still works. unplugged wall first, then from port.

Has anyone encountered this before? I don't know if its the Magsafe or the MBP that is at fault. I'm hesitant to ask for another replacement. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Need a macbook for school. Looking for suggestions

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:56 PM PDT

So I start school in a few says and my course director sent us an email saying we need a "macbook pro 2019 or equivalent macbook" 80% of my courses will be done using software on Macintosh pro desktop machines.

I'm currently Taking Mobile Applications Development in a 3 year program and we will be using the following software so far, may be more than this:

    1. Adobe illustrator CC and Photoshop

    2. Mac IOS Development software (name escapes me at the moment)

    3. Windows/Visual studio Professional (using dualboot/boot camp)

    4. Unity

Now, Macbook Pro's are expensive in Canada. The cheapest one is $3000. I think my course director suggested the pro from the ram and graphics stand point. Even with government funding for going to school, I dont think I can afford a pro in any way. and even if it was optional, school is a 1hr bus ride on a good day one way, so going to school to work on projects most non-school days is not that feasible.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I definitely need to have a macbook for my program as I'll be using it every year for most of courses. Thanks.

How bad is it to keep your MacBook on sleep? How bad is it to shut it down every time?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 07:57 PM PDT

The MacBook Air I have right now, I'd always keep it on sleep mode. Rarely do I shut it down completely, which probably is because I am lazy and find it quicker to turn on when it is on sleep. Not sure if this is a cause to why my battery life is poor now, even though I've had it for 5 years and use it religiously for school.

I just got the latest MacBook Air and wondering if I should start shutting it down whenever I'm done with it.

TL;DR: How often should I put it to sleep? Shut down?

How much longer do I have left on my Mac (late 2011) before it stops taking updates?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:45 PM PDT

As the title says I've had her for awhile. I'm want to replace her but it's not financially feasible at the moment. When can I expect to no longer be able to do updates/to stop working all together?

    Which MacBook choose?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:54 PM PDT

I've never had a MacBook and I want to buy one. The MacBook Pro 2012 15" is upgradable and, if I buy It, I'll change the hdd with ssd, change the cd reader with hdd and add more RAM. But Is a 2012 notebook worth It?

USB-C to 3.5mm dongle not recognizing microphone? Headphones/Mic troubles

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:27 PM PDT

So ive been trying to hook up headphones and a separate microphone. I bought a headset splitter, its a 4 pole trrs to 2x 3 pole trs connections, split for headphones and mic. It works just fine with with my headphones/cheap trs mic. I bought a nice sennheiser lav mic, ME-2 II to be specific. The sennheiser lav mic is trs, but for some reason, the headset splitter will not work with the sennheiser lav mic.

I dont really like the splitter, so I decided to buy a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle. I figured, ill run my headphones with the headphone jack, then the mic with the USB-C dongle. I bought this trs to trrs dongle specifically designed for mic's

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OAXHXGM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

With this dongle, I can plug the mic into my onboard headphone jack and it works perfectly as an external mic. Now for the twist, I plugged the adapter into the USB-C to 3.5mm dongle and it does not work. It doent even recognize it as being plugged in. I know the USB-C dongle works, I plugged in my bose trrs headphones w/ mic and the headphones and mic worked flawlessly.

Any idea why the mic trs to trrs dongle works with the onboard trrs connection, but not the usb-c to 3.5mm adapter?

Right now im using my trs headphones with the USB-C dongle, which works, and im using my onboard headphone jack for the external mic, but im concerned about losing sound quality with my headphones connected to the USB-C dongle

    Halp

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 04:02 PM PDT

So I've had a, macbook pro 13 inch 2019 two thunderbolt 3 ports, for about a week now, and I love it its so convenient for school use in high school. However, I just started looking at the laptop requirements/recommendations for college. I am a tech NOOOB so I don't really understand processor memory storage whatever. But I read that I don't have the storage required for one of the colleges im applying to. I was wondering if I can modify my mac to meet requirements or if I have the money, get recommendations. Sorry if this is what y'all consider a easy answer found on the first page of google.

Repair shop recommendations in SF Bay area?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:08 PM PDT

Otherwise fully-functional 2016 MBP 15" took a little drink and set off One, only One liquid indicator. Apple store guy said they would have to completely gut it (policy) for $1400 but recommended I may be able to just get away with a replacement logic board. He mentioned KangarooMobile but research into them tells my gut it's not a good choice. Anyone from the Bay area have good luck with an 'authorized' repair service? Thanks in advance.

    Trying to decide MBP Specs

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 09:19 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm debating wether to get an i7 2.6 GHz or i9 2.3 GHz 2019 MBP. I don't game, but i'm looking for a workhorse for studying and productivity: A lot of apps open (multiple ebook apps, study apps, productivity apps notes/To-Do lists, and HiFi music streaming from Roon, Chrome with a shit ton of tabs open. etc.). I'm getting 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB HD, and I don't game, but like good image quality, so I might just settle for the RX 560.

Or hell, I might even wait until the 16" MBP comes out (I heard September?). The 15" is pushing it already in terms of portability for work, but I hear the 16" may not even be bigger than the 15".

By the way, I looked for a purchasing megathread but only see the one from 2017 that's archived.

Is it a bad idea to buy a MacBook if you don't have an iPhone?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 09:06 AM PDT

I'm planning to major in computer science, and a MacBook is extremely ideal for this field. However, I've always been an android lover myself (please don't kill me) and so I own a OnePlus 6 that I'm quite fond of. I know in the "apple ecosystem" having an apple phone and laptop is very useful in transferring files and general fluidity between the two, but I personally don't like iPhones so I wouldn't change my phone because of it.

Would it be dumb to get a MacBook if I don't have an apple device? Would I be missing out on so much that it won't be worth it?

13inch MacBook Pro 2019 getting extremely hot after 2 minutes of using Safari

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 01:51 PM PDT

As the title says. It's brand new. Also, the fan is going crazy, it's actually scary loud. Activity Monitor shows hardly any activity.

    Any idea why that is?

Need help deciding which refurbished/renewed MacBook to get for basic college needs+simple leisure

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:19 AM PDT

A few things: -This is my first time buying a MacBook

-I'm not going to need to download any high end programs on it, like I said it's for basic needs

-I own an iPhone XR. OS integration is a big reason why I'm buying a MacBook. Does the release year of the MacBook itself matter when factoring in integration? I assume it only has to do with the macOS but just wondering.

-My budget is ~$400. I don't mind spending a little more only if it means a very significant upgrade in performance and/or longevity.

-I'm leaning towards an 11 inch MacBook Air. It'll be easy to carry around and I'd rather not have anything larger on my desk in class.

If anyone can help I would GREATLY appreciate it :) this is a big investment for me and I'm very unfamiliar with Apple products

Battery in my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:24 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) and the battery information has changed from "service" to "replace soon."

Typically, how urgent is this sort of warning?

What happens if I don't replace the battery?

Will it just become a desktop, or are there other safety and functionality issues to consider?

I'm currently overseas and would rather sort this out back in the US, but I don't know when I'll be back. I work online and travel constantly so I just want to know how urgent this is.

I contacted a certified Apple shop in the next country and they want to charge over $600 to replace the battery. Is it very risky to go with another shop not officially certified by Apple? Seems like it could be dangerous.

I have no problem using it as a desktop for a few months, if it's not going to explode or anything.

    Thanks for the information!
