Don’t you think the brightness HUD should get revamped in iOS 13 as well?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 05:17 PM PDT

I know the brightness HUD like this doesn't get used nearly as often as the volume one, but don't you think it's a bit of an oversight that it didn't get revamped as well?

My best friend and I made a better trip planner with a drag and drop itinerary. Introducing Tour.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 06:45 AM PDT

    Hey /r/apple

My best friend, Maxim /u/2001kraft and I, Jenn, developed a new cool trip planning app called Tour that we wanted to share.

You can get Tour on the app store here.

Last year, when I tried to plan a trip for my family, I found was that the whole process of planning a trip was more difficult and tedious than it had to be:

    1. You have to go and find a flight, find one that fits your schedule, dig through 5 websites and apps trying to find the best price, and then finally book a ticket.
    2. Find a hotel and sift through all the even crappier sites and apps who love to stuff ads and 'ONLY 2 ROOMS LEFT!' in your face and gauge your wallet for as much 'booking fee' as they can.
    3. Find some things to do, dig through travel blogs that spend way too much time talking about irrelevant personal stuff rather than just giving you things to do.
    4. Finally, where do you put it all together? I looked to the app store because in the past I just planned my trips by memory, some notes and bookmarking the travel blogs. This time, I tried Tripit and Google Trips but I found that having to manually enter all the details of each activity yourself, along with having to memorize and manage the time was just annoying.

I texted Maxim about how overly difficult and annoying this whole process was. We both thought we could make a better one. When I came back from the trip I just played around with some UI designs on Sketch and Origami and came up with a new interface where you can just drag and drop an activity into a slot, and it automatically calculates the times, location, and position of the activity for you all the while all you have to do is just search for stuff. However, my original idea of dragging from a search section to an itinerary section in one screen was impossible to do on mobile due to the small screen (Still looking to make a web app or a desktop version of Tour that has this direct drag-drop) so instead I then came up with the 'dragger' concept you see in Tour right now.

Here's a quick demo of the planner and the dragger.

Right now, Tour only fixes step 3 and 4 where it helps find things to do and makes planning easier. You can also find and book hotels in-app with a handy map and hotels via Booking.com (To be perfectly honest, I don't like them either, they do exactly what I state in step 2 but it's the only one we can afford, for now, we're looking to have an in-house hotel booking system in the future if you guys can help us get big enough). We're currently working on a brand new update that should come out very soon that allows you to add travel/transportation to your plans such as flights, trains, and buses.

We also have our own subreddit /r/officialtourapp if you want to keep up with us.

If you do run into any bugs or have any feedback please do tell us! We're looking to fix all bugs ASAP and are very happy to take feedback on what you think of the app or where you think we can improve it.

After all, we just want to make Tour the best trip planning app out there. Looking forward to seeing what you guys think.

Apple Engineering Interview Process? (Help Please)

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 03:32 PM PDT

Hey there! Let me tell you about where I am with Apple. I'm shockingly proud of my interview performance, yet dying of curiosity to know what they're thinking. Any input or guesses are appreciated!

I applied online to be an Engineering Intern (nothing software engineering related, but hardware related). The position was aimed at grad students who can commit a full year. I'm only an undergrad that can commit one summer. They already knew that. I submitted an application and resume anyway because I told myself, "What's the worst that could happen?" Then a few days later, I received an email saying that a team viewed my resume and was interested in interviewing me. Huh? I was then emailed a proposed date and time of an interview and the name of the interviewer, who happened to be an Apple Engineer. I said to myself, "What in the world are they thinking wasting their time with me."

I thought I'd be informed of "stages" of whatever interview process they had. I thought the first interview was typically done with a recruiter - but I "skipped" straight towards someone on the team I'd be working with. The very first thing he asked me to do was to describe myself for 3 minutes. It was a very technical interview in nature overall. The questions were open-ended, broad, yet technically complex. There were a lot of things I didn't know how to answer, but the interviewer sort of "guided me." He asked me technical questions in such a way where he first asks something very broad, then somewhat helped me think of solutions bit-by-bit. An example question was (and this hints at the position I applied for), "Walk me through how this is manufactured, from raw components to being shipped out to vendors." I had no idea how to answer, but he helped by asking "Well, what do you think happens in this stage or that process?"

It seemed like a test to see how well I can approach solutions with little to no guidance. Of course he asked about my previous experiences. Whenever I mentioned things I discovered by researching how Apple does things, he followed up by asking "What do you think happens after Apple does that?" The last thing he said was "You'll be hearing from insert recruiter's name here for 'next steps.'"

My best guess is that there may be something Apple might want me to do for them as an intern (that's not mentioned on their job listings). Or, they may be tapping into meeting students that aren't yet quite fit to become a full-time intern, but want to know who they are for future reference. But this is very unorthodox for a corporation, I think (this is my very first internship interview by the way).

    What do you think?

Ghost Reader, an RSS feed reader app powered by AI

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 02:57 AM PDT

Hello everyone! Today I'm here with a new app for RSS readers. It's simple, fast and powerful.

Most of the RSS feeds are partial these days, where you will have to click the link and open the article in browser with ads and tracking. It's really annoying!

Ghost Reader uses AI to find full-text feeds of a known websites that offer partial feed. Also all the feeds text are cached offline for better reading experiences.

We are also the only app with support for cloudflare protected sites 😎

    Free version: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ghost-reader-full-text-rss/id1474344412

    Sample video: https://streamable.com/90j09

    Few screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/63geR9d

If you enjoy using the app don't forget to rate the app 🙂

    Get pro: https://ghostreaderapp.com

Please note that, unlike other feed readers Ghost Reader Pro doesn't charge you a monthly fee!

Too bad Apple didn’t make the Facebook Portal

    Posted: 03 Aug 2019 08:54 PM PDT

I think it could've easily been a hit if a company as privacy conscious as Apple would've created the device. Its very sleek and futuristic and the smart camera framing is genius.

I think Apple's next product should be a smart display. Just something to think about.
