CarPlay running on a Fire HD 8 tablet [PSA Followup]

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 05:46 AM PDT

I posted earlier this week about the CarPlay dongle I got for my car's Android headunit (link below), and a lot of people asked me if this mean they can run CarPlay on an Android tablet, and to be honest I was curious myself.

    Quick answer - it does!

I connected my Amazon Fire 8 HD tablet to a micro-usb to USB (OTG) adapter and the dongle to it, and it just worked:

note: I did have to install the autokit app (from an apk) on the tablet, just like I did on my car's headunit, and I also already had Google Play and Google Services side-loaded to the tablet before (but I'm not sure if it's needed).

    Original post about the dongle:

Discussion: The biggest issue keeping iPad from being a true laptop replacement is RAM management for apps

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 02:23 PM PDT

Today, I decided to pair my iPad (6th generation) with my Magic Keyboard to use instead of my MacBook and the most frustrating issue is how often apps reload in the background.

On macOS, if I haven't closed an app, there is 100% likelihood that when I return, it will be in the same state that I left it. On iOS (iPadOS) it seems to be a toss up as to whether or not a webpage or app will reload when I return.

I was hoping iPadOS would improve this, but it seems to be the same as iOS always was in this regard.

Will a future version of Photos ever have the ability to convert your whole library to HEIF/HEVC?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 09:35 AM PDT

It would obviously be something that would take a lot of time and processing power. Maybe something that could happen quietly in the background when your Mac is idle and plugged into power. But it would be great as a lot of people have large photos libraries, and it would offer great reduction in space taken up.

Is this kind of conversion possible to do losslessly? If it's a lossy conversion, I could see why they wouldn't build that feature in.

To be clear, I'm referring to Photos for Mac. Having an iOS device do this would be crazy.

What do iOS apps receive when you allow access to contacts?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 07:25 AM PDT

When iOS apps ask for access to your contacts, what do they receive? I assume that they don't receive notes on contacts because they aren't shared when contacts are shared; but if an app that uses phone numbers gets access, do they also see addresses and contact links?

This sounds like a very Google-able question but I haven't had much luck. Sorry if it's the wrong kind of question for this sub.

    iPhone: Tick-Tock-Tock

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 09:20 PM PDT

I'm here before all of the YouTube reviews 2 months from now complain about the 2019 iPhone not having a redesign.

The tick-tock cycle is gone. The redesigns now take place every three years rather than every two years. The iPhone 7 kept the iPhone 6/6S design and added an extra lens. The 2019 iPhone will keep the iPhone X/XS design and add an extra lens. This pattern will likely continue well into the future.

Once the notch is removed, there'll be no significant strides left to take for redesigns. There'll probably be slight redesigns every 4 years like the MacBook Pro.

What does an unsupported iPhone ACTUALLY mean

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 06:14 AM PDT

I have an iPhone 6 plus. It will not be supported on IOS 13 but what does that actually mean in reality. Will things like my banking app stop working when the updates happen?

I might be optimistic but I'm hoping to keep the phone for 1 more year and have full functionality. Even if I can't have IOS 13.

[US] Great deal for latest Macbook Pro 13 at BestBuy

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 09:32 AM PDT

If you are a student, enjoy extra $100 off. You can sign up for student membership at BestBuy very easily. Link here

Here are the prices and links with student discount

    MacBook Pro 13, i5, 8gb ram, 128gb SSD - $1,099

    MacBook Pro 13, i5, 8gb ram, 256gb SSD - $1,199

The 256gb is probably the best deal. $200 lower than Apple.com price and no need to deal with selling the Beats headphone for those that don't want it. That's the one I just bought

    The 2020 iPhone

    Posted: 28 Jul 2019 08:43 PM PDT

Why is everyone thinking that this may be the major redesign iPhone year? If Apple were to continue the tradition, 2019 iPhone 11 will feature that ugly design then the 2020 iPhone is going to be an S model. Probably with 5G (they will even say the fastest iPhone yet), faster A14 chip (5nm), maybe 5/6GB RAM, and better cameras.

The next major redesign will probably be the 2021 iPhone 12.
