PSA: So CarPlay dongles actually work. Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:22 PM PDT While browsing AliExpress, I came across a dongle that's suppose to add CarPlay support to my no-brand (Chinese) Android headunit. Now, while they also wireless version, since I was skeptical this thing will even work, I didn't want to risk too much money on this experiment and ordered the wired version ($47, but it goes for less when it's on sale). Long story short - I got the dongle today, installed the apk they provided on my headunit and to my surprise - the thing works perfectly! It's super fast/responsive connected to my iPhone X (running the latest iOS 13 dev beta), and I haven't experienced any major issues so far. Totally recommend it if you have a cheap android headunit in your car (just maybe go for the wireless version). tl;dr: https://i.imgur.com/7wNDm0V.jpg (I'm not attaching any links since I don't want to promote anything, just search for "CarPlay dongle" and get one with good reviews.) How do you clean your MacBook screen? Posted: 25 Jul 2019 02:43 PM PDT I have been using Clorox wipes and a damp mircofiber cloth. Is there a better way to do it? [link] [comments]
What device is actually doing the processing for CarPlay? Posted: 25 Jul 2019 08:05 AM PDT When you connect your phone to the deck, which device is actually running iOS? Is your phone the one doing all of the processing and the deck is there to display the information like a monitor? Or does the deck have a CPU running its own instance of iOS, in which case you would need to replace it every couple years in order to run the latest version of iOS? [link] [comments]

The revival of a poor abused mac Posted: 25 Jul 2019 12:44 PM PDT so a little backstory. i am a tech nerd, i've been taking things apart and putting them back together since i was five. i was recently browsing the aisles at my local goodwill computer store and saw in the scraptop (scrap laptops generally missing ram, hdd/ssd, and with some other issues) bin a macbook pro retina. it was only 80 dollars but was in a sorry state. missing all the original pentalobe screws with just 4 philips screws in the corners to keep the bottom plate, missing the feet, on the bottom. it was also missing not only the ssd but the caddy for it, being a first gen early 2013 retina and having a caddy under the mouse holding the proprietary ssd. i scooped it up and took it home right away. i happened to have one of apple's sata ssds from a macbook air that i found in a dumpster dead so i ordered the caddy on ebay, the proper screws and feet from amazon as well as an 802.11ac wifi card also from amazon and it all arrived today. i put everything together and crossed my fingers. to my uttermost surprise the system not only booted up but everything worked. the specs are an i5-3230m, 8gb of ram, 256gb of storage, 2015 macbook pro wifi card, and a battery that still has 90.1% capacity. the screen is immaculate, and the keyboard is a little worn but seems to work fine. the outside of the case was the dirtiest i've seen. but a little 91% isopropyl alcohol, and all the stickers and dirt/grime were scrubbed away. all in i'm at about 120 for a beautiful little computer that should work great for college. i've been using lab computers so it'll be nice to finally have my own to do stuff at my dorm instead of walking to the computer lab. iCloud Account Privacy Concerns (Apple and the Gov's Continued Accessibility of Your iCloud Data) Posted: 25 Jul 2019 09:24 AM PDT When will Apple allow their customers to decide if they want to store their iCloud account keys without Apple holding a copy? Apple continues to talk about privacy this and privacy that at the application level, but they still hold the master key to the majority of your iCloud data which, in my eyes, is unacceptable. Who thinks this privacy concern needs to be addressed? Why hasn't Apple done anything to address this concern? [link] [comments] |
