[Review] Ditched Logitech Slim Folio Pro for Zugu Muse Case + Anne Pro 2

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:07 AM PDT

    Hello,

About a month ago, I posted my new iPad setup with a Logitech Slim Folio Pro keyboard case. I've been using it since then regularly and loved the case, but ultimately decided it was less than ideal overall. Instead, I purchased the Zugu Muse Case (Navy Blue) which I am using alongside my Anne Pro 2 keyboard.

    Current Setup

    Logitech Slim Folio Pro

The folio was great in helping the iPad progress as a laptop replacement. However, it nearly obliterated my ability to use the iPad as a tablet. The built-in keyboard was fantastic, including the additional function key row and the backlighting, typing was easy with little adjustment, and the keys had a decent amount of feedback when pressing down. However, the case was noticeably bulky and heavy, although it was very protective.

My biggest gripe, however, was the lack of viewing angles. The folio had 1.5 viewing angles. The normal view had a slightly tilt backwards to allow it to be seen from above as would be done when using a laptop. The back of the case could be pushed inwards and propped up slightly, making it nearly vertical but with only a few degrees difference (hence 1.5 and not 2 angles). The nearly vertical screen position + the keyboard sticking out front made it near impossible to take handwritten notes, draw, or use the pencil in any meaningful way. The lack of viewing angles was the primary reason I got rid of the Slim Folio Pro.

    Zugu Muse

Enter the Muse case - this so far has been as close to a perfect (non-keyboard) case as I think one can get. It is very lightweight and thin, yet offers a good amount of protection, is sturdy, and is well built. This alone gives it a solid edge over the folio. However, where the case really stands out is the ten viewing angles. The iPad goes from nearly vertical to a very comfortable partly flat angle. It feels sturdy throughout each angle, with magnets helping to secure it, and it remains well in place despite pressure from drawing or handwriting. The case is also comfortable to hold with the front cover flipped backwards. With the Zugu Muse case, I feel as if the iPad is a true tablet and not just a laptop with a touch screen.

The lack of built-in keyboard took some time for me to come to terms with as it is slightly less convenient to carry around two devices (this is actually what pushed me towards the folio in the first place). However, the trade off has proven to be a good one. Being able to move the keyboard out of the way to draw or handwrite is wonderful, and being able to take just the lighter iPad when not typing is nice.

    Anne Pro 2

For others who are into mechanical keyboards, I've found the iPad + AP2 to be a wonderful mix. Although a bit heavier and bulkier than other portable keyboards, the AP2 is still small enough to carry around in a soft case and fits nicely in my bag alongside the iPad. All of the function keys work well (including media keys, home, end, Pg up/down, tap arrows, Fn1/Fn2 settings) and all the regular benefits of a mechanical keyboard remain. The fast BT device switching is also great when using both my laptop and iPad, and switches devices within 1-2 seconds.

I hope this was somewhat helpful in comparing the two cases! Let me know if you have any questions.

Using new iPad Pro with new Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:53 AM PDT

For those who use a iPad Pro in combination with the Macbook Pro for work, do you find that you use your iPad for more than you thought you would? Does your iPad fill gaps in uses that your Macbook doesn't fulfill, or does one seem to routinely replace the other?

Is Apple news plus worth it?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:34 AM PDT

Anyone here subscribe to Apple news plus? I'm most interested in WSJ and New York Times articles but I've heard you really don't get access to all the articles when you subscribe. I'm most interested in financial and business news. I enjoy magazines but once again Apple doesn't have my favorite magazine the economist. Not sure it's worth the $10 a month. I tend to read more magezines on vacation since Mags seem to be more for entertainment purposes than being informed with the latest business and financial news.

Advice connecting iPad Pro 2018 with PC Monitor, Keyboard, and Mouse

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 11:10 AM PDT

    So here's what I have:

    1. IPad Pro 2018 (USB-C) with iPadOS installed
    2. Two VGA/DVI PC Monitors for work.
    3. HP PC for work.
    4. USB Keyboard & Mouse.

The keyboard, mouse, and monitors and currently hooked up to my work PC via USB & VGA respectively.

What I want to accomplish is to be able to connect the keyboard, mouse, and one of the monitors to my iPad now that iPadOS has mouse support. I also want to be able to switch the three accessories between the iPad and my work PC.

I know I'll need at least 2 adapters, a KVM switch to connect the keyboard, mouse, and monitor to both the iPad & PC and a USB-C Multiport that has VGA & 2 USB-A ports.. I can't use wireless anything because of work restrictions. It's already a complicated deal working with multiple adapters so I'd like to accomplish this as simply as possible.

Questions: 1. Has anyone accomplished this setup before? 2. What adapters do you recommend? 3. Is this even worth it?

    Thanks!

Lighting Flash Drive support for iPad Pro 12.9" 2nd Generation?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:18 AM PDT

Hello! Thinking even more about selling my gaming laptop for an iPad Pro, but because of my $700 budget I can't get the 3rd gen with the keyboard add-on, not too worried about the pencil. So, I found a good deal on the 2nd gen 12.9". The only problems I see is that it's older than the second gen and still uses a lightning port instead of USB-C. Do lightning flash drives work with the second gen for file support like videos, pictures, and documents? Or could I use an adapter from USB c to lightning? Thanks for the help!

Sandisk external SSD will not function with lightning iPad with USB3 camera adapter

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 01:54 PM PDT

I just bought the USB3 Camera adapter from Apple to test out my Sandisk Extreme 510 SSD and it does not work even with auxiliary lightning power.

The source of the issue seems to be insufficient power as the SSD isn't recognized at all, much like what happens when you try to plug in an external HDD. There isn't even an 'insufficient power' warning message like what you will get if you try plugging in a flash drive without auxiliary power.

This is an expected problem when you consider that Lightning wasn't designed for this usecase but still somewhat disappointing.

Does anyone else with the iPadOS Beta think widgets are severely lacking?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2019 02:42 PM PDT

Let me start by saying I KNOW that this is the beta and there's still a lot to go, but during my initial messing around with trying to find what widgets I'll prefer on my home screen, I'm noticing a lot of them seem to lack the ability to customize and display what I want/need.

Other than that I've had relatively smooth sailing with the OS as a whole, and definitely like it. Just wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were now that widgets will be more "in your face."

    Old school question

    Posted: 26 Jun 2019 10:30 PM PDT

Hey everyone, so I have an old school question. I have an Ipad 2 which I think I got from Oman (Middle East). Back then all apple products came with Face time restrictions on the governments request.

I've been living in the US now and I was wondering if there is a way to get Face Time back on the iPad. Someone told me it's a software thing and not hardware.

Does anyone have any info regarding this. Thanks!!

    Mouse Support changes iPad entirely

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 03:53 AM PDT

I've always advocated for mouse support on iPad and have often been told 'Just buy a MacBook' (Which I already own...) but, the issue with that is - implementing mouse support on iPad (a feature I need for certain things), is much easier than putting pencil support on a MacBook (Also a feature I need). I always wondered how they'd do it - but what's most interesting about Mouse Support on iPad OS 13 is that there's been hardly any changes and it feels really good.

I'd love to see a fully fledged supported mouse that isn't just hidden in accessibility - and I hope with the usage of it over the beta, that happens. But I thought it'd feel clunky and unoptimised but even when using Word documents, it feels natural and normal to a Mac/PC. That flexibility is what will make iPad become more and more usable for a wider range of people.

I just love it, and I think I'm finally at a point where once I've got the 11 or 12.9 Pro (I'm still questioning which is best for my needs...), I'll be able to hardly ever use my MacBook - more than likely sell it once the app support for iPad OS is there.
