4 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 21)

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 07:07 AM PDT

Welcome back, fellow mobile gamers, to this weekly roundup of the 4 best games I played last week. If you're new to these posts, welcome, hope you'll enjoy - and if you're here for the 21st time... well, I hope you still have more room on your phone for a few more games, because here are my mobile gaming recommendations of the week ;)

This week, with a fun turn-based strategy RPG with tactical combat and roguelike elements, a fun indie sandbox RPG adventure, a twin-stick top-down shooter with controller support, and a turn-based strategy card game that mixes Chess with Clash Royale-like deck-building.

Disagree with my opinion? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 20 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get started:

Hoplite [Game Size: 12 MB] ($3)

    Genre: RPG / Turn-based / Strategy / Tactical combat – Offline Playable

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

Hoplite is a popular turn-based strategy RPG with tactical combat and a few roguelike elements, such as randomly-generated levels. And it's simple core gameplay but painstaking difficulty is what makes it amazing! :)

The game has us move around one step at a time on the hexagon-tiled map, as we take out all opponents by throwing our spear at them, using our shield to knock-back bombs, and jumping to avoid getting killed, until we eventually get to the end of the floor.

At the end of every floor, we get to pick a single upgrade, which will last until we die, which also ensures that every playthrough will be slightly different. It's a game that doesn't look difficult on the surface, but that will take some real brain-power to master.

Deiland Tiny Planet [Game Size: 139 MB] (free)

Genre: Adventure / RPG / Sandbox - Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Deiland Tiny Planet is a sandbox RPG adventure game where we slowly build up our home on a small spherical planet by gathering and crafting new items.

I like that the game's tutorial tells us very little, leaving us to explore the world on our own - and in addition, the UI is non-bloated, the controls are simple, there are no forced ads, and whenever we level up, we get to pick which attribute we want to upgrade, which is where the RPG element comes in.

The progression is rather slow, however, as we have to wait 10-15 seconds every time we chop down a tree or mine some ores to finish that task, unless we buy the $6 iAP that removes this system. Not a deal-breaker, but you may want to consider this game a $6 premium title if you really want to dive into it.

John on Fire [Total Game Size: 444 MB] ($4 - free version in-the-works)

    Genre: Shooter / Top-down / Indie / Controller Support – Offline Playable

    Orientation: Landscape

    Required Attention: Some

    tl;dr review:

John on Fire is a top-down indie shooter with a story-driven campaign and no less than 4 additional game-modes to dive into once done with the 40 story missions.

Although taking a bit to get used to, the dual-joystick controls work decently well, and fits the game's overall rather wonky style and gameplay, and there's even bluetooth controller support built-in.

There are no less than 30 guns to unlock in total, and although the game has its small glitches here and there, it offers a rather unique gameplay experience.

An ad-supported version is coming to iOS and already exists on Android, which includes the entire campaign unlocked for free, with a $4 iAP to unlock all game-modes and guns.

Stormbound: Kingdom Wars [Total Game Size: 187 MB] (free)

    Genre: CCG / Card / Strategy / Turn-based - Requires Online Access

    Orientation: Portrait

    Required Attention: Full

    tl;dr review:

Stormbound is a multiplayer turn-based strategy collectible card game that mixes a Chess-like board with Clash Royale-like deck-building and unit upgrading systems (except no wait-time lootboxes, thankfully!).

We start with 3 energy and 4 cards, each of which has a mana cost. On every turn, we deploy cards which then proceed to attack any nearby opponent, and whichever units are left at the start of our next turn then move one tile forward towards the enemy base, which we have to get down to 0 HP.

The UI is simple and great, and game is fun and easy to get into, without sacrificing depth and strategy. But the monetization that has us level up cards from 1 to 5 by gaining multiples of the same card makes the game very pay-to-progress-faster, which some will certainly not like.

However, Stormbound is one of those types of games where the core gameplay is so well-made that many will most likely still enjoy the game despite its monetization - not unlike Clash Royale or Hearthstone.

What’s with the ads for games that completely lie about the gameplay?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 08:31 AM PDT

I've seen this a couple times now and it really baffles me. First one is that remodeling game that shows a point-and-click adventure type setup where you have to match the tool to the repair, but the actual game is a Match-3 affair. I actually fell for that one and played it long enough to remodel the first room, so maybe it's not that stupid of a tactic.

Second one is about prisoners escaping from prison while zombies attack. One ad shows an adventure game type setup, while another is a tower defense kind of game. I wouldn't be completely surprised if neither one is actually the core gameplay element.

Why do they do this? Seems like it's more trouble to make a misleading trailer only to get people clicking through and getting disappointed by the results. Sure, they get people to download the game, but then what? I'm not going to buy IAP to get better at playing a game I didn't want to play in the first place. I did watch a few ads, but no way they made more off that than they paid advertising it enough that I downloaded it in the first place. What's going on here?

Good Idle Mobile game to play while at work?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2019 06:23 AM PDT

I have a nice job where my desk is pretty secluded where I set my pace. I am looking for a nice idle game that has a good amount of content where I can play passively/idle.

I've played Idle heroes and I prefer other gacha games to it.

I've been looking at city builder/sim/civ type games and they look pretty good.

Any suggestions? I'm open to pretty much anything.

Why do people hate mobile gaming?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 08:06 PM PDT

It seems like mobile games are the butt of the gaming industry. Clearly, you guys disagree. Where do you think this perception comes from?

    My best guesses are:

    • The frequent use of micro transactions and manipulative practices to squeeze money out of users
    • Unfamiliar or unreliable controls
    • Limited capacity for depth or complexity
    • Gaming culture's inability to accept change

Personally, I love mobile games. And there are really great ones out there that are all exceptions to the list above.
So why aren't those the story of mobile games? Why does it seem like mobile is synonymous with poor quality?

Anyone on iOS/iPadOS 13 notice that the Steam Link app no longer works with PS4/Xbox controllers?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 11:07 PM PDT

The most recent update a few days ago seems to have broken controller support. When you launch the app, it asks you to map all the buttons, but of course can't map the guide button and then the app crashes on the final button. Tried it on a 2017 10.5" iPad Pro, and my brother tried it on his regular iPad, both with the same result.

I know iOS/iPadOS 13 is beta software, but still--controller support was working flawlessly until now. This is something Valve changed with the app in their update, not Apple.

For those waiting on iOS 13...it's awesome having support for these controllers. You should definitely look forward to it!

    Personal Hidden Gem games?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 12:38 PM PDT

I'm not talking about popular hidden games like Pirate Outlaws or Pixel Dungeon, I mean the kind of ios games that wouldn't show up in an article because they're not worth writing about, but you love them anyway & play them almost daily.

For example, a few of mine are: - Sheeping Around - Miracle Merchant - BuildUrPalace

What iOS RTS is most similar to Age of Empires 2?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 09:07 PM PDT

I'm looking for an iOS RTS similar to Age of Empires 2. A game where I can command large armies, build up my own lands, invade other areas, expand my empire, etc. I would prefer it to have the option for single player, but multiplayer is fine. I don't really want a play to win game, or one where you have to spend money on "gems" and shit to make the game playable.

I'm not really interested in building up a city/kingdom as the main focus, I'm more interested in the combat between armies. The military campaign aspect, the large scale battles, tactics, and strategy. The building of my empire/city/kingdom is a feature that I want, its just not the main focus.

I'd like the "best" one of course, but I'm willing to try a few to narrow down my preferred one.

Edit: there are so many options when googling and watching YouTube vids. I can't find any real advice or reviews because everything looks sponsored. All of the screenshots and vids are pre rendered cut scenes.

Tip of my Tongue type post: Trying to find a very old spaceship game

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 03:12 PM PDT

    BACKGROUND INFO

The game had an aesthetic that is extremely rare to the ios store. Instead of the more popular pixel or vector graphics, the game is more akin to sky force, but everything has a diffused surface texture. The assets are still in 2D, but the aforementioned aesthetic makes the look of things reminiscent to a painting. There was no direct light, it was all diffused with minimal contrast.

I had a difficult time trying to find the game on my own given its relatively generic name. It's something along the lines of "Space Odyssey" or "Rocket Odyssey", something that might includes words of space, rocket ships, and adventure of some sorts. That's the very best I can remember and it is very fuzzy.

I had this game back in circa 2010. I had an ipad 1 (the one discontinued in like 2012) before I stopped playing next to the first Metalstorm game. Both I presume are long gone (if there is a way I can play lost mobile games, that would be appreciated).

    MENU SCREENS

So you download the game, tap on it, then a loading screen came up. The game has you holding your device long side horizontal. The loading screen was an image of the player's red rocket ship, which was the familiar vertical football shape with a circular window in the center with a single engine exhaust and four black fins that appeared to also act as landing gear. The rocket is landing (or taking off) the surface of an terrestrial blue planet (think artist impressions of alien planet landscapes but color corrected blue). The ship is on the right side of the image with the rest of the space being the very vast landscape.

Then you get to the level select screen (I don't recall a main menu, but I guessing it's just a Mandela effect). The levels are into sections, each with (16? 25?) levels in a (4x4? 5x5?) grid. The level buttons are just smooth spheres labelled with their respective numbers. After completing a level, you get a rating out of three stars, the first awarded for actually completing the level, the second and third dependent on speed and health remaining. The levels had to be completed sequentially and would remain locked if otherwise.

The background of each section is the planet landscape like the loading screen. The first section the planet is blue, then in the next section it's a green planet, then red (I don't know if there was more sections).

    GAMEPLAY

The first level is the tutorial. You control the red football rocket ship with a blue background of clouds and the landscape for parallax. Your ship is affected by gravity; if you don't do anything then the ship will fall "downwards". The camera is directly locked onto your position and will follow you as you venture into this unknown land as if the game was 2D. Despite having gravity, the level design is of a vertical maze (like you were looking at a maze from a top down view), meaning that there was floating walls, "floors" and "ceilings" while still fighting gravity.

If you press the left button circle button, the ship with fire its engines while leaning left. You press the right side circle, the ship will do the same but leaning right. If you pressed both circles simultaneously, the ship simply moves directly upward.

You mission was to simply find the exit, a floating glowing circle that led you the results screen and lets you continue to the next level.

I am unsure if the ship had a fuel bar, but it definitely had an "energy" bar (it was really a health bar). Any and all contact or impact with anything in the level that wasn't pickups or the exit penalized you with minus one point of health. The bar was divided up into sections of a pyramid, with the first few bars blue or green, then yellow, then red to indicate low health.

After the next few levels of moving around in a vertical maze trying to avoid moving walls, the game then throws turrets at you. The turrets had slow firing rates, slow turning rates, and the bullets were usually big with very low velocities. Some turrets down the line would fire homing rockets. All turrets were attached to the walls with a certain range.

If the player got hit by bullets or projectiles, they would lose one energy section per hit. They had no method of directly retaliating against the turrets. What they did have was a shield, slow mo, and possible an EMP blast. These tools also drained energy, so the player had to decided whether it was best to use a shield and lose some energy or directly eat fifty projectiles at once. At certain levels the exit would also act a pick up to give the player more energy bars, which would prepare them for the coming levels that continuously ramped up difficulty.

One very memorable level was the last one of the blue section (the first one), where the player had to navigate a long narrow horizontal corridor with turrets lining up the floor and ceilings almost back to back, then the player would go "under" to continue going the opposite direction before reaching the exit. The level was effectively just a "rush to the finish" design.

Despite the circumstances, the game was quite soothing and relaxing to play thanks to its sound design. Everything was very calm, the turrets firing projectiles were simple muted mechanical sounds towards your ship as it flew by with the mild hum of the engine with a very abstract soundtrack playing in the background. Not unusual noises, but the most I can remember is maybe slow piano and/or simple calm synths.
