[Tip] Keep MacBook awake when closing lid

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:36 PM PDT

    1. Open Terminal
    2. Type sudo pmset disablesleep 1
    3. Enter password
    4. Enable sleep w/ sudo pmset disablesleep 0

Useful when uploading/downloading stuff, streaming media, keeping a connection online, etc & don't want to worry about the lid being open.

DO STEP 4 WHEN YOU'RE DONE or else your MacBook will drain battery & heat up (stored in a sleeve, etc).

Reinstalled twice, SMC, PRAM, etc. resets. No luck. Checked the logs nothing meaningful there either. I have all the Mohave updates. Read this is a known issue, what is the fix? Called Apple all they want to do is have me reinstall AGAIN!

Completely Frustrated with Apple and their crappy keyboards

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:18 PM PDT

I bought a 2016 12" MacBook at the beginning of 2017. It is my lifeline because I work from home and use it every day. This is one of the models that was recalled because many of the keyboards had keys that would start sticking, which happened to me. I took in in around October 20th of last year and it was sent off to Apple to be fixed. I was told it would take 2 weeks. I didn't get it back for six weeks. Luckily I was able to borrow a machine to keep working. Now it is happening again! I can't use the keyboard because the keys are sticking again. I called Apple customer service and it was just "you have to take it in again" blah blah blah and I was furious. It should have been fixed the first time. The agent had the gall to tell me to just "go buy a new machine" so I asked him if the $1600+ dollars was going to come out of his ass because that is a big purchase for me. I feel like because it is a known problem that isn't being solved with just one fix I should get a replacement from Apple. If you know something is defective and you can't fix it, do right by your customers. Has anyone else had to send in their laptop multiple times and get little actual help from Apple? I am a damn loyal customer, but now looking into other options.

Instead of buying a new 15" MacBook Pro I plan to just upgrade my 2015 and use it til it dies

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:51 PM PDT

The original plan was to give my current 2015 15" MBP to a relative, but now I'm reconsidering and may urge them to buy the cheapest MacBook (they only need it for email/browsing).

Just about everything on the 2019 MacBook Pro models is a turnoff—from the keyboard issues, to the needlessly oversized trackpad, that horrific monstrosity that is the touch bar (I like actual mechanical touch feedback thank you very much), and the soldered SSD. I'd buy a Thinkpad if I didn't absolutely need flawless OS X operation for work (mostly Adobe CC). In fact, the only real positive I can see with the new model is the ability to squeeze in a bit more RAM, but that alone doesn't seem worth the price.

I may just upgrade my 2015 MBP's SSD, or just grab one of these bad boys and a little microSD expansion. Not much I can do about the RAM but I may get another couple years out of it.

    Am I crazy?

    Thoughts/feedback/agreements/disagreements?

Which macbook is right for me?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:28 PM PDT

So I am second year stats major and looking for a macbook.

I code in R a lot and also do research papers. I do not like the new butterfly keyboards so I have to go pre 2016 and lose type c rip. I will just do general productivity so I want a very nice monitor to look. Any thoughts

Wait to buy MBP and iMac?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 10:42 AM PDT

    I currently have a late 2018 Air, 2015 13" Pro, and a 2012 15" Pro.

I use these all for work.

My work would also be willing to let me get an iMac and a newer 15" Pro with probably a $2500 budget on each, but I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for the next iteration. Especially for the iMac.

Is there any news about when the next big facelift might be coming to both the iMac and the MacBook Pro's?

Debating between Macbook Air and Macbook Pro w/Touch Bar

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 08:38 AM PDT

Hello! I'm looking to upgrade from my current mid-2012 MacBook Pro (pre-retina, 2.9 GHz, 8 GB memory). It still works just fine, but my dad (a designer) is interested in buying it, so he has something portable, and I'd like to be able to sell it while it's still usable. I initially purchased the pro since I was in school for graphic design, but my career has shifted a bit so I'm debating on if I should still go with the super powerful machine or be more cost-conscious with the Air.

I'd like to keep CS6 on the new laptop, as I do some design work for a local haunted house every year and occasional projects for friends/friends of friends. I'm not a huge PC gamer outside of Sims 4 (which works well enough on my current mac, even with mods installed), so I would like something that could still run it with little issues.

Part of me wants to get the pro for "whatever life may bring," but the more realistic option might be the Air. I'm looking for something primarily casual, but still powerful enough to handle the few things I want it to do (and maybe some extra down the line) when I need it. Any advice would be great!

Best usb-c Monitor for MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 08:28 AM PDT

Hello my dudes, I have a 2018 MacBook Pro 15 and I am looking for a nice usb c monitor that can both charge my Mac and display content no problem.

From what I saw online there are a few monitors that transfer far too low watts which doesn't charge the batter instead it drains slower, also I ve hear the monitor can itself act as hub for other usb accessories such as a keyboard and mouse, is that correct? Kinda like I connect the monitor to the Mac and usb/keybord to the monitor and it will work on the Mac. I AM a total NOOB when it comes to USB c monitors and monitors in general, I don't mind if it is 1080p I just want decent quality and 27" or maybe a bit bigger, also it should charge my Mac no prob and act as hub for usb/kb connection. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY INFO

Is there a MacBook Air that has an Intel core M3?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 12:00 PM PDT

Is there a MacBook Air that has an Intel core M3?

I'm looking at doing a course through Global Knowledge and they are currently giving you a free MacBook Air if you signing up for an eligible class.

My issue is this. Where it states the specs of the MacBook Air, in their terms and conditions, it lists this as the specs of the device: Apple MacBook Air 13in display, Intel Core M3, 8GB Memory, 256 GB Flash Storage, space gray, 2

But when I google around, it shows that the only MacBook that comes with an M3 is the 12" MacBook...not the Air.

Am I right on this or is this possibly an older MacBook Air they are giving away?

Can I make a bootable externals hard dive without an internal hard drive installed?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:28 AM PDT

I put a new SSD and RAM in my 2011 MBP last year and it's been going great but a few days ago I got the white/grey screen during the startup. Recover/safe modes won't even start. They just boot to the grey screen. But when I put my flash drive with my os install (high Sierra) on it and hold option that works. But I don't want to install to my drive because I want to try to salvage that data. A guy at work told me he would bring me a hard drive I can try to boot with to see if mine was the problem or something else. So I took my hard drive out and came to work to realize his hard drive wasn't a sata drive and won't work.

So my question is if I buy an external HD and plug it into my MacBook (that doesn't have an internal drive in there) and have my os install flash drive and boot it while holding option can I install my high Sierra onto that external Hd or would I have to format that external hard drive with another computer first? I want to boot from an external drive so I can use my computer and plug my old HD in using a separate reader in hoping to salvage my old data. If that's the case copy my data to external drive then format my ssd then start over.

I'm typing this on mobile between numerous phone calls so I hope this rambling made sense

Installing Windows on an external drive on my MacBook Pro 15 2018 256gb

I need windows for a .net project. What's the best way to install windows on an external drive? What's the best external should I buy? My budget is around 100$. Would it run fine on a Samsung t5? are there any successors of t5? Thanks.

What level of privacy can I expect if I use a MacBook given to me by my employer for work purposes?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 07:58 AM PDT

I am impressed by Apple's efforts in privacy, but I'm not sure how that works when the device is managed by a third party, such as an employer.

Temps touching 100 degrees on the 2018 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 07:44 AM PDT

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro 2018 model (i7-8750-H, 256 GB SSD). The performance so far has been really good. The fans turn on very rarely. Even if they do, they are very quiet. Noticing temps using intel power gadget, I observe that the temps were jumping up to 98-100 degrees Celsius while uploading files to OneDrive/unzipping a tarball. This was around 20 GB of data consisting of small files, thus high clock speeds were expected (if no thermal constraints were present). The processor did touch 4.00 GHz (while sustaining 3.90 GHz for most of the time). IMO, the temperatures are too high and at these temperatures I expected the fans to be as loud as an airplane taking off to Miami.

Note that the laptop killed 25 percent of battery power in this task (in approx 30 min). Ambient temperature is around 27 degrees.

I am concerned if this is by design or defect. I know that I can control the fans myself using 3rd party apps, but I would like to report this issue to Apple customer service if this behaviour isn't normal. (I've heard about heating issues on this laptop, but this seems to be a bit too crazy. Microsoft OneDrive killing Apple products, lol.)

    Migration or Manual transfer

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 07:08 AM PDT

Just bought a new MBP upgrading my MBA 2011 Model. I'm wondering if people recommend I manually transfer files/ apps or do the migration. My concern with migration is that any junk files I have on my MBA will also come along and slow down the MBP.

    What do people recommend?

    Thank you!

Screen distorts when i plug MacBook into tv

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 05:18 AM PDT

Ever since owning my macbook i have had this strange issue where if i plug it into my tv using the hdmi port the screen on the macbook completely distorts, (kinda like this, https://www.reddit.com/r/macbook/comments/bti728/something_is_rather_wrong_with_my_2013_macbook/ just it all looks the same.) but it goes away after 1 second once my tv is recognized. Anything i should be worried about?, i got 6 months left on my cex warranty .

    The macbook is a late 2013 15 inch , 2ghz ,8gb, iris pro ,256gb.

    2018 MBP vs 2015 MBP

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 03:56 AM PDT

    Hi,

So i've been browsing a lot these past few months and i'm kidna set on buying a MBP. I'll be using it mostly for development and multimedia purposes with maybe the rare hearthstone/ warcraft 3 reforged game here and there. Though its main use will be web development (Vue, Polymer, React and all the associated tooling that comes with using them.

I can't really decide between this 2018 one (price is around 2450$) https://www.pcgarage.ro/notebook-laptop/apple/133-the-new-macbook-pro-13-retina-with-touch-bar-coffee-lake-i5-23ghz-16gb-256gb-ssd-iris-plus-655-mac-os-high-sierra-space-grey-int-keyboard/ and refurbished 2015 one with the following specs:

    CPU i7 3.1Ghz,16GB DDR3,Intel IRIS 6100,SSD 512GB,Wifi,BT,SD,USB 3.0 and around 200ish battery cycles (price is around 1600$).

As a side note, i think 256gb should be enough for me since I make use of google drive quite a bit and i really don't mind the touchbar (played with a friends mbp with touchbar and i find it ok)

    Any help would be appreciated.

MacBook SDD Upgrade vis Apple Service

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 03:19 AM PDT

I know the SDD isn't upgradeable via DIY or a third-party but wondering if Apple offers the service and how much it is. Anyone have any insight? Cloud and/or external storage isn't a viable solution.

    Thanks!

Single Thunderbolt 3 bolt connection to two demanding monitors

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:25 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I just got a new MacBook Pro 15 inch and have a 27 inch 1440p 144 Hz monitor and also a 27 inch 4K monitor. I would like to connect my MB Pro to these two monitors through a single Thunderbolt 3 connection. Is it possible without compromising any performance? Ultimately, I would want to have a triple monitor setup, two external and of course the monitor on my MacBook Pro, and would not want the two external monitors to be mirrored but to be independent of each other ! Thanks in advanced !!
