[Tip] Keep MacBook awake when closing lid

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 11:34 PM PDT

    1. Open Terminal
    2. Type sudo pmset disablesleep 1
    3. Enter password
    4. Enable sleep w/ sudo pmset disablesleep 0

Useful when uploading/downloading stuff, streaming media, keeping a connection online, etc & don't want to worry about the lid being open.

DO STEP 4 WHEN YOU'RE DONE or else your MacBook will drain battery & heat up (stored in a sleeve, etc).

Why would Apple remove 3D Touch?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 08:46 AM PDT

From the lack of 3D Touch on the iPhone XR and the further rumours spreading around the latest beta release of iOS 13, it seems like Apple is at least considering the removal of such a great and exclusive feature. No matter how much thought I put into it, I just cannot comprehend the logic behind this.

I mean, this Force Touch technology was developed (and I believe patented) by Apple themselves, and they implemented it into the Apple Watch, MacBook trackpads and the second-gen Magic Trackpad -- all of which are a joy to use simply because it adds so much more functionality to the device and, when coupled with the amazing Taptic Engine, becomes something I just cannot get enough of. It's been almost two years with my MacBook and I still find myself completely dumbfounded when I shut it off and realize the trackpad is literally just a solid sheet of glass that doesn't physically "click".

Devices like the Apple Watch also wouldn't be as functional as it is today if it didn't have Force Touch, and the iPhone 3D Touch features are something that's become a part of my daily life; especially the control panel UI, peek & pop, live photos, and varying line thickness in creative apps (the Markup app has become second nature to me). It's also one of those little convenient easter eggs that make Apple devices different from the competition, by perfecting the user experience through haptic feedback.

I know Apple as a company who is not afraid to remove otherwise good features in favour of the alternative, then dedicate themselves to improving the alternative as best they can. Keeping that in mind, there's literally no physical alternative that would effectively replace the practicality and ease-of-use of 3D Touch on iPhone. Haptic Touch is just a fancy name for press & hold, and let's face it, it'll just make it feel like we're using a boring old Android.

So if they've already put so much money and effort into advancing Force Touch into the incredible technology that it is today, why would they bother removing it in the next iPhones? It just doesn't make sense to me. It shouldn't matter if 90% of iPhone users don't know/care about it, Apple should cater more to their loyal fanbase and stick to the features that make them stand out from the crowd. "Think Different", huh?

The icon grid on iPadOS remains the same in landscape and portrait. No more shifting rows!

iOS 12 and before was 5 x 4 in landscape, 4 x 5 in portrait. Now we have 6 x 5 in landscape, but also in portrait.

Thoughts and discoveries on the new Music app in Catalina

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:51 AM PDT

Here's a set of screenshots of iTunes 1.0, iTunes 12, and the new Music app in Catalina:

    https://i.imgur.com/BdqgMhK.png

Here's what I've discovered is missing as far as music goes in the new Music app as compared to iTunes:

    • Multiple Library Switching (I believe libraries could still be switched by swapping directory names).
    • Column Browser (somewhat of a redundant feature).
    • Automatic XML Generation (can be done manually, and for many/most situations it's not needed anymore).
    • Media folder now must be kept organized (I consider this a good thing). Edit 1
    • Files now must be copied to media folder (again a good thing). Edit 2

Here's what I've discovered that has been retained (but isn't getting press coverage):

    • Spreadsheet view (see screenshots)
    • Smart playlists
    • AppleScripts (some scripts may need to be edited if they refer to iTunes instead of Music, but the script library is the same)
    • Editing of metadata
    • You can organize your media folder yourself and spew files all over the place, however the options to do so won't appear until after Music has finished initial indexing. See:

    https://i.imgur.com/CGlcyW4.png

Here's what new (and not being covered much):

    • Lyric pane
    • There's a Search field separate from the Filter field.

    Also noticed:

The Music Library file is actually a package which contains the following files:

    • Preferences.plist
    • Application.musicdb
    • Extras.itdb
    • Genius.itdb
    • Library.musicdb

    Overall impression:

So far, I'm very pleased with this. Those of us who depend on iTunes for heavy lifting and need more advanced features are likely to be content with what's in the new Music app. This very much is not the "Aperture -> Photos" scenario many of us were dreading. Instead this is iTunes with everything not music stripped out and a general refresh of the UI including the return of color to the sidebar in a pretty attractive way.

Anyone doing any really extensive fringe stuff with iTunes is going to find that they most likely can do the same thing with Music. There are a ton of little things like being able to copy from iTunes and paste into Excel that still work with Music. Some of what is missing may be added in subsequent betas. I'd imagine multiple library support will be added back, but who knows.

The best new feature of all?

No longer hearing people bitch about how bloated iTunes is, even though splitting it up really didn't do much other than have you switch apps instead of switching modes.

BTW: Just a reminder that this is beta 1 level stuff. Don't install this on a Mac that you need to use or with a library that you need to have and isn't backed up independently. I'm not going to comment on the speed, reliability, etc... because beta.

EDIT: Music can take a long time to do initial indexing. After this is done, options to manage your media folder and spew files all over the fucking place appear in preferences:

Best thing about iPadOS 13 beta is that I can now reliably scroll text fields on web pages

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 06:57 AM PDT

Fields like this comment area were always a problem on the iPad as scrolling within the field was unpredictable and mostly unusable. With the 13 beta this works perfectly.

Why isn't there an Aperture X?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 08:16 PM PDT

I got curious about it after I read that Aperture won't work in Catalina and everybody still using the app should move to Lightroom, etc.

Here is my question, Apple in the latest WWDC goes ahead and says: "Pros we love you, here is the machine for it" and they demo this incredible monitor and machine with superlatives attached to them. Then they go ahead and show just how much better Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X are going to be working on this new Mac Pro. Musicians, we got you, videographers, we got you, photographers, ehh not so much.

If they have the monitor display and this beast of a machine, and they go out of their way to showcase the hardware capabilities with their creative apps, why isn't Apple re-launching Aperture?

iPhone 7 on iOS 13 is amazingly powerful

    Posted: 06 Jun 2019 03:50 AM PDT

Noticed a speed increase and smoothness with the first beta update, and for benchmark lovers, I scored on Antutu 143,763 points, and just now after the update I got 190,698

    I'm impressed, well played Apple.
