AirPods are Amazing…Around 75% of the Time

    Posted: 03 May 2019 08:38 AM PDT

I've had the first-gen AirPods for about four months and wonder if I'm missing something. When they work, which is the majority of the time, they are phenomenal. I get the love. But their glitch rate seems...high?

Sometimes they just don't connect, gotta connect them manually. Sometimes only one will connect so everything is in mono; disconnecting and reconnecting sometimes fixes. Sometimes they show connected but then audio blasts through the iPhone speaker. Sometimes I answer a phone call with a double tap on the AirPod, only to have the call go to my phone and no one can hear me until I frantically fish the phone out of my pocket. And flipping open the case to check battery life? Takes anywhere from 30-60 seconds for it to show up on the display.

Maybe I got a bum pair but I suspect it's more likely that AirPods are overhyped as this magical "they just work" device.

LPT: Accidentally tap the top of your screen and scroll to the top of your Tweetbot feed? Tap it again to go back to where you were.

So I'm sure we have all been there. Scrolling through your twitter timeline and you accidentally scroll to the top.

Well I just figured out that a second tap will take you right back down to where you were.

How iPad Pro has eclipsed my Macbook Pro - workflow, user experience and general thoughts

    Posted: 03 May 2019 11:52 AM PDT

I've been an iPad user since the Air 2, but I've always had a computer. For writing and for editing and watching movies on a big screen, torrents etc etc - you *need* a computer. But there were a few things iPad did better - namely, something very specific to me, live manipulation of drums via an array of apps and interfaces - example . It was a bonus to have it be a capable media consumption device to boot.. But all my video editing, writing and "pro" work got done on my "pro" machine.

But writing was a no no... everything about the Air 2 felt anti writing. I got a bluetooth keyboard thing, it was cramped, it disconnected all the time, selecting text was a nightmare.. just everything was bad. So, I cracked on with writing on whatever computer I happened to have, either pc or mac (currently have a 2012 macbook pro) and kept upgrading my ipad when I could.. Got the 9.7 pro, and with it came new music apps, and processing power.. I started using it on stage, I felt like it would work without letting me down in a live situation.. and it did! Still no writing though..

Most recently though, I got an iPad Pro 2018, First one i've had in a while. I got the pencil, which was just too clunky for me first time round, the whole lolipop charging thing felt dumb. Anyway, it's a game-changer. I've done every single bit of writing on it using a logitech bluetooth keyboard. I have written all my outlines in pages, and scripts in Final Draft.

I can screen record hand written text in Procreate, import it into Luma Fusion and key out the background and have custom hand written titles. I can animate my illustrations, do full blown animation with Animation Desk - on top of all the things i used to use an ipad for - all the music production and liver instrument manipulation, using apps that cost 5-10 pounds.. I just don't find mac intuitive anymore. I'm writing this on my macbook and not only do I find the typing experience less good, I keey reaching out to touch the screen - something I was very against when I thought about computers with touch screens.. Basically, I'm not quite a 'pro' user, i don't have hard drives filled with video and images and stuff, but i used to be.. and I'd still use the iPad if that happens again. I'd make it work.

ok, so, that's that... here's a run down of things I use ipad for.

video editing: something i never thought I'd use it for, but Luma Fusion is powerful. And the processing power of the ipad pro makes it quicker than using my macbook. It can do green screen, speed ramps, this version can only do 3 layers of video but 2.0 will have 6, which is more than enough for me.

Art: procreate and a few others, combined with apple pencil - I'm currently feeling more creative than I ever have in terms of art and the experimentation these apps and devices allow me is invaluable. Also just discovered combining procreate illustrations with green elements to key out in luma fusion to animate illustrations, its awesome.

music: my main thing - currently not so much, my band are on hiatus, but I use Audiobus 3, Turnado, LiveFX, LoopyHD and a few others to do what I do and its a user experience that I simply can't find on macbook, at least not as straightforward with such amazing results...

writing: i use a logitech keyboard that can connect to three devices so I use it to switch between my ipad and macbook as necessary and use the Final Draft app (which syncs with iCloud drive and thus the desktop Final Draft) along with Pages for outlines. I have zero complaints about this. The pencil allows me to sketch in pages and add visual ideas or storyboards, Final Draft works fine, it could be better but so could most things...

Media consumption: Mainly on my computer.. ipad has stupid borders on a tv and can only mirror. hoping this changes in later releases of ios.

overall - currently on about 90/10 in favour of iPad.. just thought you guys might be interested.

Do you use Apple News app or a RSS reader like Feedly for your information?

    Posted: 03 May 2019 10:11 AM PDT

Just curious what everyone else is doing.

I love the look and feel of the Apple News app, especially on my iPad, but the inability to add custom RSS sources kills it for me. I keep finding myself jumping back to Feedly, my friend of many years.

I saw an article from 2016 that prematurely got my hopes up, saying you could add a RSS source to Apple News via the Safari "add to News" sharing shortcut, but that's apparently no longer an option.

What do you guys do? Do you put up with the shortcomings of the News app, or do you choose function over form and use a RSS reader of some type?

“Right to Repair” activists should understand their warranty is voided and should not seek support

    Posted: 03 May 2019 07:29 PM PDT

There have been countless leaked videos of iPhone screen repairs. Apple even bragged about their new "machines"'in store to help do it faster. Yet YouTube videos show people doing it with simple tools in minutes.

The youtubers aren't "doing it right". As soon as you open up your device your warranty should be dead. Hear me out.

Newer iPhones have some sort of liquid resistance, whether it be for 30 minutes to an hour at a meter deep. If you don't reapply those sealants properly you're weakening the device.

So if you crack your screen 3 months in. And repair it yourself. And then get liquid damage that's your fault. There is a reason, in my opinion, Apple does it properly. The same is true for almost any device out there. If you repair it wrong, you're in the wrong. And most people aren't trained properly to do it the right way.

(In case you're wondering, I would upgrade my Mac's ram, or hard drive, or fix my screen myself on my own devices. But I do so knowing that Apple will never touch my device after I do)
