I am looking at tutorials so that I can get caught up but many are just the standard surface level stuff. Does anyone know of a good in depth MacOS tutorial for people that understand computers? Please save me from looking like a moron!

Also if you care. The job I accepted is support for wireless mesh hardware for small businesses. So I never had a reason to about apple.

Stop Safari from constantly asking for my password to autofill usernames and passwords on macOS

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:18 PM PDT

There it is in the title.

10.14.4 introduced this asinine requirement to constantly ask for my password every time I want to use autofill, which is precisely why I use autofill, so one doesn't have to constantly type shit in.

What the fuck, Apple? How do I get rid of this bullshit?

Edit: As usual, I solved my own issue.  -> System Settings -> Touch ID. Uncheck: Safari Autofill

Can my 2012 MacBook Pro (non Retina) work with a 4K 144Hz display?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 12:32 PM PDT

I know the GPU doesn't support the resolution (Nvidia GeForce GT650M), but my monitor is dying and I need a new one. I thought I might as well upgrade to a 4k, for the future, but in the meantime I would use it with my current 2012 MacBook Pro, hopefully outputting at 1920x1080 and 60Hz.

    I wondering if :

    - typical 4K displays (which are typically 144hz) can reduce their rate to classic 60Hz (without Freesync/G-Sync, which my old Mac doesn't support)

    - the Macbook won't be put off by being connected to something that is natively 144Hz resulting in no picture at all, full incompatibility.

    It's 2019 and I don't feel like buying yet another 1080 monitor...

    Wisdom appreciated.

Turning an 8-year old iMac into a media center - crazy idea?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 11:50 AM PDT

My SO has a mid-2010 iMac (think it's an Intel i5, no idea how much RAM it has) sitting in her closet. She said it stopped working about 5 or 6 years ago because of a hard drive failure (or so she was told by someone at the time). I haven't tried booting it up because I need to find the power cord, but let's assume it's just a failed hard drive.

Since it has an SD card reader, can I get an el cheapo SD card, install a current version of Mac OS on it, and run Mac OS from the SD card exclusively? Apparently you can get 128 GB SD cards for like $20. I don't know how much space Mac OS requires, but that should be more than enough, I imagine, since I've had MacBook Airs with only 256 GB SSDs.

The idea would be to put it in the bedroom and use it to stream Netflix, Hulu, or whatever.

If so, is there media center software for Mac that has a good "10-foot interface"? And that supports popular services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.? Apple used to have Front Row bundled with Macs, but that's long since discontinued.

And is there some version of a remote (or maybe iPhone software) that will work with such an interface?

Is this a crazy idea or did I have a stroke of brilliance?!?

What does it mean if on my iPhone my message sent as green but on my MacBook, the message is blue and shows a read receipt?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:52 PM PDT

Sorry if this is the wrong sub. I sent someone a message and for a few minutes, since they have an iPhone as well, the message was blue but never delivered. About a minute or two later, I checked again and the message turned green and sent. I checked my MacBook Air and not only did it show on my laptop that the message sent as blue, but the person read the message immediately.

I read somewhere that you could tell if a person blocked you if an iMessage on your MacBook does NOT show as delivered. But not only does it show that it delivered, it shows that the person read my message immediately. What does this mean?

Uncertain If I Wiped Broken XS?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:09 PM PDT

The phone is pretty much totaled and I wanted to make sure I wiped it with an update. Wanted to make sure that it went through, is there any way to tell? I could get the phone to lock before, but now when I push the button no questions for my passcode but I also can't get it passed the setup screen going through the "Hello's" of different languages.

I would have to connect the phone to WIFI to finish which is impossible due to the damage, but I just want to have some reassurance that all went accordingly. I need to send the phone to the insurance company for the claim and I don't want to have to worry about my information being stolen along with the disappointment of getting a refurbished phone that notes a warranty sooner to expire than the one that was broken.

Risk Factor: Purchasing a  Watch Series 4

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:05 PM PDT

Hello all! I saw an Apple Watch Series 4 GPS 40mm for sale at CAD $530 (retails for $585 taxes in). I got the price down to $515. It's BNIB - does this completely mitigate the risk of it being stolen or iCloud locked?

My new cable and new iPod Touch 6th gen suddenly stop talking to my computer

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 09:39 PM PDT

Right now, I have my day-old replacement iPod Touch 6th Gen and brand new cable and all day I've been getting "Do you trust this device" prompts when it's plugged into my laptop - 2009 HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 - to charge.

It, the drivers, and iTunes are both up-to-date.

Any idea what's going on? Or is it just a 10-year-old USB port that is possibly, finally, about to die?

Iphone XS max 256gb recurring glitch— has anyone else experienced this?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 01:23 PM PDT

Hey everyone, so i've had a glitch since the first day I got my new phone (around December), where my phone screen will lock up, buttons become completely unresponsive & when I attempt a reset it doesnt work. My phone will stay this way for 2 minutes & eventually show the little circle signaling a shut off & then go right back to my lock screen where face id works. Is this normal? Like, does this happen often to the xs max phones? Or should I head to an apple store and hope they take my word on the glitch occurring?

I'm currently running iOS 12.1.3 but this has happened with previous iOS versions as well.

Apple Pay person-to-person no longer supports credit card payments

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:17 AM PDT

I just tried to use Apple Pay in messages to pay someone back. Normally, because my balance is $0, it would ask to charge my credit card with a fee. I do not own a debit card, so I was fine with the fee. Now, it no longer accepts a credit card, and I called Apple Support to confirm.

If you would benefit from having the ability to use debit or credit, please join me by providing feedback: https://www.apple.com/feedback/apple-pay.html

Merging imessages from both iphones and Macbook

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:33 PM PDT

Hi guys! I'll try to make this as concise as possible.

I use my iPhone XS everyday to message people as well as my 2013 macbook pro. I have my old iPhone 6s that automatically receives messages as well (I still have it connected because I use it for testing apps).

Anyways, I accidentally fucked up and deleted all my messages off my iphone XS/macbook/icloud. For some reason, it didn't delete any of the messages on my iPhone 6s. I went ahead and restored my iPhone XS from the last backup I had in March..but I want all the messages I've sent since then to be on my iPhone XS.

Is there anyway I could merge messages sent from March - now from my old iPhone 6s to my iPhone XS and my Macbook pro. I've tried multiple times to upload the messages from my 6s to the icloud and merge it to my XS but it's been useless. Maybe I'm not doing it right?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time!

Good monitor for a mid-2015 15" Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 07:25 PM PDT

I have the Intel Iris Pro graphics version of the 2015 Macbook Pro and I was wondering if anybody knew of some good monitors to use with a refresh rate of 60 Hz? Ideally I want to stick with a resolution of either 3840x2160, 3840x1600, or 2560x1440. I'm having trouble deciding based off what I've looked up so far.

I've also struggled to find with certainty if anyone managed to get a monitor to work at 3840x1600 @ 60 Hz or 3840x2160 @ 60 Hz (excluding the LG UltraFine 5k monitor).

Which is the best iMac (second hand) to run Logic Pro X for heavy use in a studio, for as cheap as is feasible without just being not good enough?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 04:09 AM PDT

Would also consider Mac Mini. I've got a 2017 Macbook Pro touchbar and I would ideally get something as powerful or better for studio use. Just not sure of all the options out there for iMacs and Mac Minis etc which would cut the mustard.

Would spend $1500 in an ideal world, but would spend more if that meant getting something that would work and would last a while.

Upgrading from a 6+ to an 8+ - what are the biggest, not so obvious advantges?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 01:47 PM PDT

    Hi there!

I'm still using my good old iPhone 6+, but I think it's finally time for an upgrade. I'm pretty sure it's going to be asignificant upgrade in every aspect, but since most comparisons take the two conscutive phones into consideration and in this case I'll be upgrading to a device that's 3 generations newer, I was wondering what are the things I should look forward the most?

I know the obvious things like a much better camera, overall speed of the device, wireless charging, no headphone jack (I use AirPods so that won't be an issue), and 3D touch, but what other new functionalities should I be aware of? Both hardware and software-wise?

macbook pro, mohave, 'system' section on storage is 65 gig huge

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 05:23 PM PDT

Hi. My 2013 retinal MacBook pro, 251 gig flash hard drive, 8mg ram, latest mohave osx....just wondering...when I click 'about this mac', storage, there's now a large section (the last one) which says 'system' and is about 65 gb large. I still have about 60 gb remaining, unused, but wondering why the 'system' thing is bigger now. I don't recall it being that large earlier. thank you

    Walker Talkie Issues

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 05:18 PM PDT

Does anybody else have issues with the walkie-talkie app? What I've noticed is that if anyone walkie-talkies me, it kills Siri on the watch for two minutes. This is true whether you're saying hey Siri or holding the button. I just got a new set of second generation AirPods and have now noticed that if I get a walkie-talkie it kills them for quite a while. The double tap on the earbuds quits working and hey Siri also quits working. I spent several hours on the phone with Apple Support about this and they had no idea. This is a completely recreatable issue, that I have re-created on both my wife's watch and my watch.

Any one else having these issues? Any ideas on how to resolve?

"backup was corrupt" error message for iTunes backup of iPhone after redirecting backups to an external drive

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 01:17 PM PDT

My MacBook is low on space. I haven't been able to do a backup of my iPhone through iTunes for a while because there's not enough space. I went through the steps to route my backups to an external drive. After copying the backup folder to the external, renaming the old backup folder on my MacBook, and entering the Terminal command, the rerouting icon showed up on my MacBook in the MobileSync folder, which is supposed to mean the backup redirect worked.

When I went to back up the iPhone in iTunes, it gave me the corrupt-backup error message: "iTunes could not back up the iPhone "[name]" because the backup was corrupt." It tells you to delete the backup for that iPhone in iTunes Devices Preferences. When I went to do that, I noticed that neither of the backups (for 2 different iPhones) that used to appear there—and were on my MacBook before starting the backup-redirect process—are there. I looked into the error message, but I only found instructions that aren't specifically for backing up to an external drive. The process might be the same; I don't know.

I then tried to rename the backup folder for the specific iPhone I'm backing up where it's now located on the external drive. Tried to back up again but got the corrupt error. Then I tried to delete the backup for that phone from the external, which was in the instructions I found. Still got the error. After these failed attempts, I renamed the folder for that iPhone's backup on my MacBook. I still got the corrupt error.

I need to back up the iPhone because I haven't in a while and I'm getting a new phone. It is backed up to iCloud, but I want to be able to restore from a backup in iTunes when I get the new iPhone.

    So, main questions:

Why were the backups no longer listed in iTunes after I redirected the backup folder to the external? Is that normal?

I kept the backups on my MacBook after doing the redirect because I didn't think I needed to delete them—and I wanted them there in case the redirect didn't work (they're also in old Time Machine backups). Do I need to delete that specific backup for the phone?

Can I create a new backup for the iPhone (that will back up to the external) without restoring it? Restoring would defeat purpose of doing the external-backup process because it would restore from a fairly old backup.

Any other suggestions to fix this?

3 month old battery now at 53% capacity!

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 01:11 PM PDT

I replaced my iPhone 6 battery in December 2018 and now I have 53% capacity. I just learned how to find that number today so I have no idea what it was when they gave me my phone back after the replacement. I'm not sure what to do now. The battery lasts about 20 minutes and sometimes not even that. They won't replace it as I tried that. I'm not in the position to buy a new phone. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm not really tech savvy as I got my first iPhone/smart phone at 57 but absolutely don't want to be without it now. Hooked. Thank you.

MacBook Pro mid 2012 - Service Battery warning

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 10:13 AM PDT

I just got the service battery notice on my MacBook Pro. I have just under 700 cycles. It's charging normally and doesn't seem to be dying any quicker than usual - I use it plugged in most of the time. Not noticing any abnormal heat coming off the unit.

Now my question is - should I rush to get it fixed or is it okay to wait? The warning says it's fine to continue using it until I get it serviced.

However after searching here and online while some posts are confirming they've left it and it's fine, other people say to change it immediately.
