Now that Inbox is leaving, all I want is an app that can bundle mails in inbox Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:00 AM PST This is how I want to use my inbox. Example: https://i.imgur.com/4RhS9Fr.jpgI have been using it this way for two years now. Unfortunately Google is killing Inbox and this feature wasn't ported to Gmail. So far I tried Mailspring, Spark, Airmail, BoxySuite and Gmail web app and none of them is able to do this! It just displays a really messy inbox for my workflow. All I want is the ability to bundle emails in inbox. Any recommendations? Maybe there is an option I am not aware of in the apps I tried? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:15 PM PST I work for a medical device company and we recently had a computer update. There was a stack of 2013 MacBook pros that we could pick from for free and it is basically in perfect condition and I'm in need of a spare laptop. So of course I snagged two. My boss asked that we do factory resets on all of them since they are all locked with old accounts. I followed the instruction to clear the hard drive with Mac OS X Utility. Following this when attempting to reinstall Mac OS X, the version that it tries to install is El Capitan which is unavailable. The Mac was in storage for a while due to upgrades periodically as people got promoted. Please help! I do not know how to install Mojave...or any Mac OS at this point. Tl;dr Got a free MacBook Pro from my work that is about 4 years old. Wiped hard drive to do fresh install. Fresh install wants to install El Capitan which is unavailable. HELP Thank you [link] [comments]
Just say "No!" to subscriptions Posted: 27 Feb 2019 03:57 AM PST Unless I simply cannot live w/o an App, I refuse to be a sucker and shell out month after month, year after year, to use an app. Period. YMMV. If enough of us just walk away and refuse, the app developers will have to reconsider whether moving to the subscription mode makes economic sense for them. [link] [comments]
APFS sparse image has issues when created on/moved to FreeNAS AFP share Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:12 PM PST Hello all, Okay - so my issue / question... I use Carbon Copy Cloner on my Mac to do my backups. I backup to a sparse image that lives out on FreeNAS (via AFP sharing). For the longest time (as well as currently) this image is HFS formatted. My Mac is running the latest macOS, and my internal drive is APFS format as is the default now. No issues with any of this. If I need to restore, I can copy and/or mount the .sparseimage and pull files/directories over at my leisure. I wanted to try doing all of the above - but changing the destination sparseimage to an APFS formatted one. For testing, I used Disk Utility and created a blank APFS formatted sparseimage on my desktop. I made the size 1 TB, and copied some files into it. All of this worked as expected. If I copy this sparseimage over (I safely unmounted it first) to my FreeNAS share, and I try to mount from there - I get a 'no useable partitions" error in Finder. I also tried to create the sparseimage there directly from Disk Utility and this resulted in an error. Has anyone ran into this ? Am I doing something wrong or is this expected behavior ? Thanks in advance for any wisdom. FYI - I posted this over on the FreeNAS forums as well. The more I'm thinking about this, I feel like there is something fundamental about APFS that I'm missing. One thing that springs to mind is that when I create my blank HFS sparseimage - I choose "no partition map" for the image. With APFS this isn't an option (it must be GUID). I feel like this is where the issue is springing up from. [link] [comments]
Question on transferring files from Mojave to High Sierra. Posted: 27 Feb 2019 11:39 AM PST So today I made the choice of downgrading from Mojave to High Sierra because certain apps were not working with Mojave. However, I didn't realize that I can't transfer my files from a newer OS to an older one. Or am I wrong? So basically: My latest time machine backup was on Mojave. I downgraded today to High Sierra, and now I'm trying to files from my latest backup but it won't let me because Mojave is the newest OS [link] [comments]

Multiple monitors in MacOS Guest VM Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:52 AM PST Hi all, I'm trying to figure out if there's going to be a way for me to make use of multiple monitors on my MacBook Pro and with a MacOS VM. I work from home, and I was previously using a KVM to switch my mouse/kb/displays between my personal and work laptops. I decided I wanted to go a little more minimalist, so I bought a Magic Trackpad & Magic Keyboard. My thought/plan/hope is to use the main MacOS on my MacBook Pro as my personal, and run another Parallels VM of MacOS as my work image. Currently I'm on a 2014 MacBook Pro (soon upgrading to a 2018), and I have a 34" ultrawide, along with 2x 27" 1080 monitors. Right now, my 34" is in the middle, and a 27" on either side. This is working fine inside of MacOS. Currently, and as far as I've gotten, is that I have a MacOS guest running in Parallels, and during my work hours I keep this VM full-screened on the 34". Using gestures, I can easily flip between work and personal on the 34" display by simply 3-finger-swiping in and out of the Space (and to switch between work and personal). So everything's working great on the 34". What I'm trying to do however is utilize at least one of the 27" monitors, or both if possible, inside the MacOS guest. When I full-screen the Parallels app, it only fullscreens to the single 34" monitor. From what I keep reading around, it sounds like a Windows VM guest handles this all correctly, and actually makes use of the other external displays. I do a lot of WebEx'ing for work, and sometimes sharing the full ultra wide isn't ideal for the WebEx recipients on the other end. Aside from this, I'd just like to be able to utilize the screen Realestate of the 27" monitors for my MacOS guest. I have ran into a bunch of dead ends trying to get this to work. I have tried both Parallels and Vmware Fusion, along with playing with all of the setting combinations in these apps to get this to work. I've tried this all while also changing the "Displays have separate Spaces" setting in Mission Control, and have tried multiple combinations of the settings. I even went as far as to connect a USB-to-HDMI adapter, and have it connect to the guest OS instead of the main MacOS. When trying it this way, the other monitor that's connected to the USB-to-HDMI adapter's screen DOES display correctly, but Parallels won't actually allow my cursor to move onto this screen. I can start dragging a window to that screen and it starts moving onto that screen, but once my cursor hits the edge of the screen, it won't let me drag it anymore. At this point, I'm making due with using the single 34" monitor for my MacOS guest VM, but it's definitely not ideal and not what I set out to get working. Has anyone had any experience with this at all or happen to have any other wild ideas on how I may be able to get this working? Thank you! smesch [link] [comments]
Why is my start up disk always either full or almost full? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 11:17 AM PST And why the hell is 72GB full of "other"?!?!? How do I discover what this "other" is and how do I clear some space on here that will last longer than a week until my next "startup disk full" notification? [link] [comments]
USB SSD for BootCamp problems with USB keyboard and mouse after booting in Fusion Posted: 27 Feb 2019 10:36 AM PST Hi All, I'm not sure this is the place to post this question, please let me know if there's a better place for me to post: I recently purchased a 2018 15" MBP. My intent is to use this for work/school and then eventually get an eGPU to be used with bootcamp for some gaming. I have Windows 10 installed on a USB-C external drive (not thunderbolt, just USB 3.1) that I am able to boot on bootcamp. At one point, I wanted to boot the SSD in Fusion so that I could run Visual Studio under Windows. It seems to be that after I boot with Fusion, I have problems with booting "natively" with Boot Camp. I first couldn't get it to boot on boot camp after being in fusion, but I booted again in Fusion, shut down properly (though I think I did last) and then was able to boot in Boot Camp. The problem from there is that none of my USB-attached devices (keyboard, mouse, audio) work. My display which is also connected through my Thunderbolt 3 hub does work however. I've realized that if I go into the Intel drivers section in the bootcamp drivers directory and reinstall the Chipset drivers, I am good for that boot. At the end of the install, it asks me to reboot at which point I am no longer able to use any usb devices as soon as it starts back up. I would really like to not have problems with going back and forth with booting via Boot Camp versus Fusion and was wondering if anyone has encountered this before. I would be happy to go back to just using Boot Camp as long as I didn't have to reinstall all over again because it's a bit of a pain to get things to install properly on a USB drive. Anyone else not using Mojave because of font rendering? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 09:24 AM PST I feel compelled to post my experience with Mojave, and wonder if anyone else has gone down this road or feels the same way. Mojave's loss of sub-pixel antialiasing has been an interesting/annoying adventure, as I work all day on a 1080p monitor. Disclaimer: I tried all the terminal hacks, but even re-enabling sub-pixel AA in Mojave wasn't the same, as some apps were glitchy. So after the initial shock, I got used to the native font smoothing for a while. However, in the last couple weeks I noticed that the fonts rendered in Chrome, and then also Firefox, were much worse than the rest of the system (including Safari). I don't know why this is but I read somewhere that browsers had finally adopted Mojave's way of rendering fonts. In desperation I attempted to give Safari a try but found that the extensions are a mess, among other annoyances (I posted about this very recently). From here it seemed my options were to buy a high dpi monitor, switch to Windows (tested in VMWare to actually be better at rendering fonts in Chrome), or downgrade to High Sierra. I took the latter option, and forgot how much better things look in High Sierra. Every app just has beautifully smooth fonts. It worries me that Apple ditched this feature. It's just the trend I guess, phase out old tech one way or another forcing people to update hardware, etc. I guess Apple doesn't officially sell or support any low dpi monitors right now so it's justified? The whole thing just has an anti-consumer feel to it. It just stacks up with the loss of headphone jack, the new MPB keyboard, dongles, etc. These products are becoming harder to use, I know I'm the x thousandth person to rant about some of these things. But the competition doesn't seem better. Bleh! [link] [comments] |
