How can I stop my MBP from auto-connecting to a Bluetooth device? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:21 PM PST Looking for whatever works. I want to choose when I want a Bluetooth device to connect. Just because I turn it on doesn't mean I want to use it on my MBP. I prefer a terminal solution but I'm willing to dig through some GUI settings. The last thing I want is to install a 3rd party program (unless it's a CLI application). [link] [comments]

What exactly is going on with Safari extensions now? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:39 AM PST I'm not quite understanding what's going on with Safari extensions these days. It seems they are required to be installed from the App Store? Yet some are not? Or is that just some kind of workaround that will get patched? My experience so far is that I recently switched to Safari from Chrome a week ago and installed LastPass. Yesterday LastPass said the extension was no longer supported and I need to install the App Store version. I could already tell this was going to be a negative experience and 24 hours later I find there's so many bugs it's unusable. Yet, I still have the regular Wipr extension installed, not through the App Store. Is this the kind of experience we can expect from Safari extensions moving forward? I'd hate to go back to Chrome again as the font rendering just look like ass on a 1080p monitor. [link] [comments]

fixing bird process (a.k.a., a stuck iCloud sync) Posted: 26 Feb 2019 09:43 PM PST The bird process can really take over CPU (if you look at Activity Monitor). This almost always means that iCloud is stuck in an infinite loop, which you can see of you go to terminal and type:
I wrote a script. Save this in "fix_bird.sh", then Save this in a file (like I said above), and make it executable (like above).
Run with Restarts automatically immediately after. [link] [comments]

Posted: 26 Feb 2019 06:27 PM PST Ever since I read an article on using Notes instead of Evernote I've been Notes more and more because I've always had some dissatisfaction with Evernote and was wondering whether to renew my premium membership or not this year. Recently I found a bug with the latest version of Evernote. It seems if you copy text from Evernote and then paste it (e.g. into a database, or BBEdit) it adds an extra linefeed. This didn't happen before, and I was seeing weird things happen in my FileMaker database as a result, and it took a while to figure it out, but I traced it back to Evernote. I reported the bug to them, and they said they knew about it and were working on an update. Still waiting for that. The same issue doesn't happen with copy/pasting from Notes. Then last night I created an Evernote note with some photos of the electric meters on the side of my house. I did this from Photos on my iPhone and expected it to sync right away with Evernote, but it wasn't showing up for a long while, either on my Mac or at Evernote on the web or Evernote on my iPhone. While waiting I tried the exact same thing in Notes and within about 1 minute it had synced to my Mac, where I added my text comments to the note, which also synced back to my iPhone right away. I was about to contact Evernote support when finally, about 1 hour later, it did sync in Evernote. But the photos came in sideways! I know there are limitations to Notes. There isn't tagging, I don't think. And I don't know how well the search works yet. And it's not cross-platform, though I am a Mac/iPhone/iPad user. Notes also has advantages. If you have a Mac, iPad and iPhone you don't have to pay to sync between all the devices. I was teaching it to my volunteer class for seniors that I do on Sundays. They all have iPhones and/or iPads. I was trying to move them away from paper notes on which they'e been writing all their passwords, etc. The scanning is super simple in Notes, and the editing of the resultant PDF scans works really well; you can add pages, delete pages, rotate pages, re-arrange pages, etc., really easily. And the sharing features for created documents works well. And the sync works great between everybody's devices. I think in one afternoon I got everybody in my class to give up paper! I might try moving to Notes and letting my subscription with Evernote expire and see how much I miss it. I still retain my Evernote notes in case I want to subscribe again after all. High Sierra w/ NAS running iTunes server Posted: 26 Feb 2019 03:56 PM PST Aight I'm stumped, but that isn't hard, I'm new to OSX. I'm running a QNAP NAS TS-251+ and have the iTunes server on it running. That service is Firefly Media svn-1696. My Mac is on High Sierra with the latest iTunes install, 12.8.2.3 I can connect to the NAS through Finder as an AFP share and SMB (using Go). (just giving context) iTunes on my Mac can see the NAS(iTunes) Server. However, Finder cannot. **Problem** In iTunes I can switch it to NAS(iTunes) and it plays songs and sees songs....but after 30 seconds to 3 minutes it craps out and iTunes tells me there is no music on the NAS(iTunes) server. I'm guessing unstable / lost connection? Thoughts on a fix? [link] [comments]
Screen Sharing app over NAT disconnects in one second Posted: 26 Feb 2019 02:46 PM PST This is a weird one. I can use Screen Sharing to connect directly by IP to another MAC on my LAN no problem. If I attempt to connect using the Apple ID of the user of the machine (which uses iCloud) the connection happens and I see the remote desktop for exactly one second - then it disconnects every time. The router for the LAN uses NAT, so this is in play. Makes no difference if I initiate the connection from inside the LAN or from the WAN - disconnects after one second every time. The firewall of the machine I'm trying to connect to is off. There's a few hits on Google for this problem but no solutions. Anyone see this before and knows the fix? [link] [comments]
Having trouble creating installmedia for MacOS High Sierra for a late 2009 iMac. Please help! Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:39 PM PST So I did verify that High Sierra is supposed to work on a late 2009. That's the cutoff. First, I tried internet recovery but it asked for an Apple ID sign-in....I tried a couple different accounts but kept getting an error. So then I decided I was going to have to create a bootable USB. I successfully was able to create a bootable usb for Mojave but when I tried to use it on the Mac I got an error. So on to High Sierra. I noticed when downloading the High Sierra installer, it takes two seconds so must be a very small file. In the terminal, it will not let me create install media. It shows an error saying "does not appear to be a valid OS installer application." I know that I do have the correct code: sudo /Applications/install\ macOs\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/usb_1 Where can I find an older installer that will work?! Please help. Edit: I found the installer for Sierra on the App Store so hopefully this works. [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:21 PM PST I don't know the technical way to say this, so apologies if I'm stumbling over my words. I have 2 screens -- a Macbook Pro 15" + a 30" 2560x1600 external display. I have the 30inch "above" my macbook in logical layout. When I mouse between them, the two line up but the MBP is "smaller" -- there are edges on the left and right of the 30inch monitor that don't go down to my MBP's screen. Is there a way I can "stretch" the mapping between the two monitors -- so that if I move from the corner of my 15" MBP, it'll appear on the corner of the 30" (instead of like 75% of the way across the 30")? Here's a quick sketch of what it looks like LOGICALLY from current state (left) to what I want it to be (right): https://i.imgur.com/UCrbCax.jpg Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Where can I buy the wall connector bit to my charger? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 12:04 PM PST https://i.imgur.com/BMG5Jef.jpg Looking for the piece that plugs directly into the outlet rather than the extension one. Blacklist Facebook in Safari 12.0.3? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 10:49 AM PST I specifically do not visit Facebook in Safari, but I keep getting getting tracking stuff on my computer anyway. It's limited to cache and local storage (not cookies!), but it's still irritating. Is there a preferred way to blacklist FB, and similar sites? I've even installed Ka-Block, and it hasn't helped. Should I do a fresh install of OSX on my iMac (2017)? Posted: 26 Feb 2019 04:44 AM PST I have owned two MacBooks (that I have now retired and given to my parents) and now an iMac. I started my second MacBook via a backup of all my stuff on the first MacBook. I started my iMac off with a backup of all the stuff on my second MacBook. I'm far more computer savvy now than I was when i got my first MacBook, and I've done some hunting through my files. I'm realizing that I may have been carrying crap forward to every Mac I own by starting them via backups and never fresh installs. Namely, I found a folder called "iLifeMediaBrowser" in ~/library/ApplicationSupport. I googled it and it claims this is malware. I don't see any other remnants of this program but It's troubling that I've had this around for so long. Similarly, I installed my own LaPack C library back in college for projects. It's somewhere deep in the root of my hard drive and I don't remember where it is, and I'm hesitant to delete stuff willy-nilly down there. This all said, my paranoia might just be overstated. Doing a fresh install will have a lot of work/overhead on my part. I will have to manually backup the files I care about and then figure out how to resync all my stuff once it's set up as a new computer. Is it worth it? [link] [comments]
