Best use of combined work/ private MacBook

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 02:36 PM PST

For the past year I've been using my MacBook for work and private use on separate accounts and it's been an ok experience. The issue I have is I only have 1 phone (because when I had a business phone I was getting calls on both so I got rid of it once the contract ended.) and I want to be able to use some of the handoff/ cross device features, especially with iMessage and calls.

The main reason for separate accounts is security but, also to stop Siri suggesting work related stuff all the time etc. On my work account I have Citrix to access a Remote Desktop so it's not even like I need the local system but, I like to make use of it whenever possible because of things like Spotlight searches and swiping between desktops.

Ideally, I would just have my personal iMessage and FaceTime signed in on my work account if there was an option to do so. I have considered going all in on Citrix and running it on my personal account so that I get the best of both worlds but, I then lose the benefits of Spotlight and swiping. I've also considered a mixed combination but, I don't want all my work stuff cluttering up my personal space. My work involves managing a lot of spreadsheets, documents, and images that I don't want to see unless I'm working.

I would like to know how people cope in my situation and what works for them? This is all my own hardware so there is little issue with my personal stuff being visible etc. as the only things the company I work with can control is a windows server Remote Desktop via Citrix and a MS 365 account.

Is there any benefit to using an encrypted vault app, if I'm already encrypting my drive with filevault?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 11:57 AM PST

I saw this app called Hider that will encrypt a small subset of files like your taxes or medical records. Maybe it would be convenient for organizing those certain files, but is it really any safer than just storing them on my already encrypted hard drive? Assuming I'm the only one that uses the computer and they aren't being uploaded to iCloud.

Btree error? Please help, I’m screwed...

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 03:46 PM PST

Just got off chat with apple support. I don't want to believe it's true but they may be correct, my macOS (running Mojave) was freezing while running the kernel task loader. After restarting from the most recent system updates and trying to login. Seen here

After talking with apple support and getting this error after running first aid in recovery mode they told me the only thing i can do is erase the drive and start again.

I haven't backed up in awhile and i really don't want to lose some recent files. Is this really the only way to fix this corruption? I can see the files when selecting restore and looking through my hard drive but i can't move them seen here Is there a way to get them to an external drive?

Any and all help is appreciated.

MBA unusably slow for several minutes after resuming from sleep.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 03:54 PM PST

I have a mid-2013 MBA running 10.14.2. For several weeks when I bring it back from sleep, it has been incredibly slow for up to ten minutes. Key strokes may take 20s to register. Malwarebytes shows nothing amiss. When I eventually get control back I can see that the CPU was under heavy load, but whatever was causing the problem has gone by then, making it difficult to diagnose the problem. Any ideas?

What is the "Complete" menu item in Messages?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 09:19 AM PST

In Messages, under the Edit menu, there is a menu item called "Complete." (I'm not even sure what the keyboard shortcut is - it shows option key plus something I've never seen before, a circle with an arrow pointing out.) Selecting Complete doesn't seem to anything. What is it supposed to do?

Why is an encrypted disk image (DiskUtility) so incredibly slow compared to a TrueCrypt Volume (both Mac OS Extended Journaled)?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 10:50 AM PST

When I made an encrypted disk image through DiskUtility (formatted to MacOS Extended Journaled) and tried to move 200 GB from a TrueCrypt Volume into the new disk image, it was so agonizingly slow (2hrs - USB 3.0). Why is that? I have 700+ GB to move, that would take me more than 14hrs ... do I have any other options (VeraCrypt)?

Switching Desktops - Quick Blur On Top Right Side of Screen?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 11:20 AM PST

    Hello Everyone,

I am running MacOS Mojave on a 2018 MacBook Pro 15", and whenever I switch spaces, I get a quick blur near the top right of my screen. It only lasts about half a second, and only comes on when switching desktops. Besides that, things look normal and as they are supposed to without any issues when I "stand still" if that makes sense.

Anyone else experiencing this issue and have resolved it? TIA.

Change Drive type from Removable to fixed?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 03:44 AM PST

I've got a Mac Pro 5,1 and I've installed Mojave on a NVMe drive in a PCIe slot. Works great, but one quirk that bothers me is that my NVMe drive shows up on my desktop as a orange removable drive. In disk utility as well.

Is there any sort of flag I can change so the OS recognizes that the drive is fixed? It doesn't cause any problems, but its irritating lol.

    Got Stuck Updating to Mojave

    Posted: 03 Feb 2019 01:58 AM PST

First time updating a mac as I'm a PC user. I tried to update the OS and it's stuck at around 25% with nothing but an Apple logo and an all black screen. Any ideas? Anyway I can recover my files? Didn't use the Time Machine to back up so is there any solution that won't affect my files?
