I sold my MacBook Pro and bought an iPad. Posted: 28 Feb 2019 05:45 AM PST About a year ago I got rid of my iMac as it wasn't being used much and decided to get my first ever MacBook. I'd always had desktops and was so excited to get hold of my brand new 13" F-key MacBook Pro. But... I didn't use it. I felt scared every time I took it out of its sleeve. I treated it like I was holding a priceless Ming vase. Daft I know but I didn't feel comfortable with it. I stuck it on eBay exactly 1 year later and it sold for a good price - well it had had hardly been used after all. I bought a 10.5" iPad Pro with 256GB memory and LTE and haven't regretted it in the slightest. TLDR: Bought MacBook, scared to use it. Swapped for iPad love it. [link] [comments] |
The iPad is a magical experience (for a design student) Posted: 28 Feb 2019 08:54 AM PST Last night I was 3D modeling on my iPad Pro like it was no big deal for the sleek piece of aluminum and glass. It was so beautiful I had to call my father and tell him how magical it was to be designing without distance from my object, almost like I could hold it and mold it like a piece of clay in my hands. But I went to bed with one complaint: the app (Shapr3D) didn't have a polygon option. I went to bed with that tiny little rant of having to draw polygons line by line. When I woke up I just grabbed the device and got back to work before even getting up from bed. While working I noticed there was the polygon option I needed. I asked myself: "where you there all this time? It can't be, I've spent enough time here to not have noticed." I went to the AppStore and noticed the app updated overnight, adding the polygon option. The iPad is such a magical experience I wish I could shake hands with everyone who worked on making it and say thank you. The Post-PC era is here to stay and it's beautiful. [link] [comments] |
Is there a keyboard that uses the smart connector that ISN’T a case? Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:01 AM PST When I'm not typing, I don't want my iPad in a case, making it bulkier. I'm using the first gen iPad Pro (largest model) and I've been using the smart folio, but I'm on my second one and it has crapped out already. I just don't want a damn case and I don't want to use Bluetooth. Is there anything out there or am I a fringe case user? [link] [comments] |
Recommendations for a bag to store my iPad 9,7 2018 and accessories Posted: 28 Feb 2019 10:39 AM PST Hello. I'm looking for recommendations on a bag to store my iPad 9.7 2018 in a Otterbox Defender case, a Bluetooth speaker, Bluetooth keyboard. 20,000 mah power bank along with a few lightning cables, a pair of wired earbuds, a pair of Bluetooth earbuds and I'm expecting to add another Bluetooth speaker and a Steel Series Nimbus controller to my setup. What’s your gripe? What app or functionality keeps you from moving to the iPad full time? Posted: 28 Feb 2019 07:33 AM PST For the last year, I've been transitioning to my iPad as my daily driver, which it has been for about 5 months now. Just using the 2017, 5th Gen iPad too, and it's amazing in, I've never felt like it was underpowered for what I need to do. Started slowly, with email and messaging in the morning, and getting my tasks sorted out for the day, but over time I started experimenting and finding I could do more and more on the iPad, eventually I found workflows here that I liked better than on my Mac. Still, I have to go back to my MacBook Air for certain things, which doesn't bother me that much, but it would only take TWO apps to keep my on my iPad all day, every day: Google Docs and Sheets. And if my workload is heavy in either app on a given day, that means I'm spending more time on the MacBook than I'd like to. What is frustrating to me is that Google Drive on iPad is nearly the same as the web app, but Docs and Sheets are such garbage? I don't get it. They've clearly shown that they can do it. To be fair, spreadsheets on a touch screen are pretty bad, I've yet to see one that works as well as I'd like, but Numbers and Excel are head and shoulders above Google's offerings. And it's not just the iPad apps. From what I can tell, their Android apps stink too. Which is funny, because that's on their own platform! If they don't want to invest in the apps, make them available in the browser on the iPad, I'd be perfectly happy with that! Anyways, I have much more I could say, but it doesn't really add anything more to the basic issue which is that this is an example where an iPad app is not comparable to the functionality I can get on my laptop. So there's my gripe about what keeps me from using my iPad full time. What's yours? What app or tool is keeping you from working on an iPad full time? [link] [comments] |
Affinity Photo Performance in iPad 2018 Posted: 28 Feb 2019 02:17 AM PST Hi Guys, I have a 2018 iPad (The Normal one) with the Apple Pencil. I want a good photo editor to edit my DSLR pics (I have a Nikon D5300 and it outputs 24MP photos). Will my iPad be able to handle the photos and edit them well with Affinity Photos? I am just worried about the performance. I don't want to buy the affinity photo and regret the decision. [link] [comments] |

IPad Pro + IPhone + Apple Watch not as intuitive as I’d hoped. Posted: 28 Feb 2019 07:35 AM PST My Apple arsenal consisted of my iMac 2009, MBP 2010, iPhone 7 Plus and an Apple Watch (S2). I longed for an iPad since buying my parents one as a Christmas gift 3-4 years ago thinking that it would take my Apple experience over the top. Last week, I finally felt I was at a point financially where buying an IPad Pro wasn't irresponsible. I have to say, I'm disappointed with how the devices interact with each other. I was hoping for seamless transitions between my phone and iPad but so far the experience has been clunky to say the least. Out of the box, setting it up with an iPhone backup threw every app I've ever downloaded onto the home screen which took a good 30-45 mins to clean up. Pictures don't transfer via the backup or easily at all without paying for iCloud. Speaking of iCloud, I'm constantly getting "Finish setting up Apple ID" errors on both my phone and new iPad now regardless of how many times I verify my information. When playing a podcast on my phone then switching to my iPad, my watch will not control my iPad. With only about a week of experience having these devices synced, I already feel as though I could have tethered these devices better than the product development team at Apple did. I have a substantial list of annoyances already building. The communication between my Apple Watch and iPhone has been life changing quite frankly. I can't say enough great things about those 2 being paired. Adding an iPad Pro, however, has only seemed to convolute rather than add to the experience. Does anyone have tips or apps they use to improve this? As a stand alone device it's fantastic, but I really bought it to improve my overall Apple network. TL:DR - Bought an iPad Pro and as a stand alone device it is great, however, I am disappointed how it works with an iPhone and Apple Watch. [link] [comments] |
To my fellow university students, GoodNotes or Notability? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 09:30 PM PST Just purchased a refurbished iPad Pro 10.5. Attempting to go paperless. Besides a note taking app, are there any scanner apps you would recommend to aid in the paperless transition? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Using Apple Pencil to annotate purchased books? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:23 PM PST I'm going to be getting a 2018 iPad Pro + Apple Pencil 2 soon to take with me to college. I already have a MBP, so I'm hoping I can take all of my notes and read textbooks for class to go totally paperless. I also consume a lot of news, so I'm looking forward to the advantage of media consumption on the iPad. Is there any issue I should know before purchasing? Will I be able to annotate my textbooks, PDFs, and purchased books (love annotating in the margins) with the Apple Pencil without worry? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Setup to use iPad as a digital video frame Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:32 AM PST Hey r/iPad! I have a ton of videos from driving around Italy for a month with a camera strapped to the rear view mirror. I would love to be able to have these running on a continuous loop on an old iPad. I don't mind getting a new hard drive if one of the network connected drives would let me do this, but ideally I'd like this to be hands off and for it just to loop the footage on its own. Loading the videos on the iPad aren't an option as there are just too many. I do have a few options of raspberry pi's if that works too, ideally it wouldn't draw too much power! Has anyone come across a solution to this? [link] [comments] |
What are some good styluses to use on the iPad Mini 4? Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:11 PM PST I need a good stylus for notes and the occasional drawing. [link] [comments] |
Question about USB type c connections on iPad pro 2018. Posted: 27 Feb 2019 08:39 PM PST Tomorrow I am getting the 2018 iPad pro that I ordered. I want to be able to plug in my headset which is 3.5mm. I also want to be able to plug in an ethernet cable. I'm having a super hard time finding USB type c hubs that have both on it. Is it even possible? Can anyone recommend a hub that has both? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
