    iOS Gaming no. 20: Towaga

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 10:03 PM PST

    Introduction

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen! I return once more in a blaze of light (and, I hope, glory) with a review of Towaga, a beautiful defense shooter which follows Chimù, a masked defender of the Temple of Towaga in on a quest. What kind of quest, to where, and at what end? Who knows! But we can certainly enjoy the ride!

As usual, you can hit me up on the Trinity Force Network Discord server, or on the r/iOSGaming server @Syger#2331 to tell me in real-time how great these posts are, or give me any and all criticism you feel is deserved. I'll take it all! Alternatively, you can shoot me a message on Reddit.

    Details & Summary

Towaga is a fun, fast-paced game well suited for people who enjoy fast-paced defense shooters. It gets to be quite difficult, and since there are no difficulty scales, a great deal of practice or skill is required to progress. The graphics are quite solid, and the soundtrack is fitting.

    Game: Towaga

    Developer: Sunnyside Games

    Price: $0.99

    In-App Purchases: None!

    Device used: iPhone XS Max

    The Review

If you've ever played the old Atari Missile Command, you'll have an idea of what I'm talking about when I say that Towaga is a challenging shooter defense game. Okay, it's not exactly like Missile Command but hey—who's counting, right? Regardless, Towaga is visually stunning, offers tight controls, and a solid soundtrack. If there's a deep and moving story, I haven't found it—but the theme and what plot can be inferred from it, as well as the gameplay, is pretty neat!

From the get go, nothing is more immediately apparent than the absolutely gorgeous art. While certainly not to everyone's taste; it utilises a colourful palette, emphasising the difference between the masked protagonist Chimù and the creatures of darkness he vanishes. The backdrop of stars, moon, and changing temples is illustrated with the same intent, but it provides a vibrant background for the vanquishing of dark blobs. Animations, while not especially varied, are buttery smooth and a welcome accompaniment.

There is a warning right at the beginning which advises that Towaga is best played with headphones. To be quite frank, that is underselling it. Put simply, soundtrack is fabulous. It is at times alternately eerie and mystical, accentuating the pace of the level in a rumbling staccato of drums before returning to a more leisurely hum. I tried to come up with a flaw but, honestly, there isn't one. Just use headphones—you'll thank me later.

Combining visuals, soundtrack, and gameplay Towaga delivers a grim theme: you, Chimù, are racing to save the world. From what, by what, and to what end is unclear. What is very clear, however, is that something will happen if you fail, and the palette choices, musical tone, and fast-paced gameplay all serve as poignant reminders. So, while there is no story, overarching narrative, or described storyline to speak of, certain things are implied which develop a vague, ephemeral plot. It is vague enough for players to ignore entirely and focus on gameplay, but it is still there if you look for it, which is something I quite appreciate.

The gameplay itself is also quite solid. While there is no adjustable difficulty, there is a smooth (although not entirely linear) scale from the first level, which is quite easy in comparison to later levels, to quite challenging requiring at least some degree of accuracy and a familiarity with unexplained game mechanics by the fifth. Such game mechanics include the enhanced laser (toggled by the second button on either the left or right of the screen, depending on control scheme), freezing, and the different monster types.

To quickly touch on those mechanics, the enhanced laser doubles the width of the base laser as well as dealing more damage, and freezes enemies it touches. Frozen enemies take additional damage and cease movement for a short period of time. Smaller enemies are usually faster than larger enemies, but larger enemies are harder to kill—although freezing them helps greatly.

Additionally, in an interesting twist there are two separate game modes: Classic, and Exalted. While Exalted offers what feels like a smoother experience by separating the health and laser bar, Classic seems to be more fitting in regards to theme, merging the health and super bar and introducing a mechanic I'm still not entirely sure the nature of. In effect, the things you kill aren't actually removed, instead it seems they are put in some sort of stasis until the laser button is released. Personally, while I prefer Exalted at the moment, that may change in the future with more play time.

Despite the tense gameplay, however, the controls are actually slightly disappointing. They're smooth enough, and there aren't any glaring issues. They just feel… a little off. It's difficult to say exactly what it is, exactly, but I think it is the aiming. This very much feels like a game that would be perfect with a joystick (while I do not know for sure that it supports MFi controllers, I suspect it does) but, since it is played on an iOS device, there are none. Again, this is a fairly minor quibble and the controls are entirely satisfactory in every other way—they just feel a little off to me, and not quite as accurate as they could be.

In short, Towaga is a solid, if rather short, premium game. I have very few issues and those I do have are very minor. I cannot, of course, recommend it unilaterally—not everyone is interested in this sort of game, after all. However, to those who are looking for a game with gorgeous graphics, some seriously difficult levels, and a killer soundtrack, I say that Towaga is it. For $0.99, it is a steal.

    Conclusion

That's it this week folks! As usual, I would love feedback and criticism. I'm not perfect, but I'd like to know in what ways I fall short. You can, as usual, reach out to me at the usual sources findable way back up at the top, or in the short paragraph a little below.

In regards to news and news related things, I think I will bring this series to an end at edition no. 24. I have the games selected, but the reviews unwritten—some needs a bit more playtime, I feel. I will, I think, continue to write reviews in the future on older or less noticed games, but they will be far more infrequent.

For those fine fellows who would like to chat me up, you can do that very thing me on the Trinity Force Network Discord server, or on the r/iOSGaming server by tagging me @Syger#2331, or by messaging me directly. Alternatively, you can reach out on Reddit.

As always, thank you for reading. Have a fabulous week!

Are any of the Angry Birds sequels or spin-offs any good after AB2?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 07:05 PM PST

The original is a bug-ridden mess on iOS, and AB2 s just underwhelming, with no real penalties for a poor performance and endless safety nets.

Do any of the other games in the series balance it better? I'd like another AB game to fall back on so long as the original isn't workable on iOS.

    Suggestions please

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 12:11 PM PST

Hey all, I recently got an iPad for work cause it's super helpful for presenting and what not, but I'm also trying to find games to play in my downtime. I used to play Infinity Blade back in the days of my iPod touch, but sadly that's not around anymore. Any suggestions for games that are either free or $2-$5 would be much appreciated! I struggle deciding whether to actually buy an app without having played it yet, so I haven't been brave enough to buy any games yet. Thanks in advance for your help!
