For over a decade I've been a diehard Google fan and have been exclusively android since the G1. This past weekend I embraced the "dark side" and went and got myself an iPhone XS Max, never looking back!

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 11:50 AM PST

I was first introduced to the world of Apple in early September '18 for work, all they used were Macs. I was digging how simplistic everything was and just how everything just, worked. I work in tech as a developer and bought myself an older MacBook Pro to mess around with and use for personal projects. I dabbled in a few of their things in the ecosystem but only having a Mac I wasn't getting the full experience. After doing a little bit of research on iOS, I was beyond interested and decided to give it a try.

After setting everything up and doing a bit of research on some helpful tips and tricks I must say that this is hands-down, the best phone I've ever had. Said goodbye to my S9+ and hello to my XS Max and don't plan on going back! The ecosystem really is just awesome and everything just works so perfectly and harmoniously together. Both companies have their pros and cons but I feel that with Apple's tight grip on both hardware and software really allows for it to have just the best user experience possible. I can't believe I've been missing out on this for so long!

My two favorite things so far are iMessage and FaceTime so far. I'd say over 90% of my friends use an iPhone and 100% of my immediate family uses an iPhone. Being able to FaceTime with my long distance grandparents or just getting daily pics of my cute-as-a-button niece being a little cutie is the best and something I've been missing out for too long! I think my next purchase will be an Apple watch when I start running more.

One gripe I do have so far is that the home screen is so cluttered with all the apps I have it's really annoying. I've tried to setup groups as best as possible but I use so many that not all can belong to the same group.

TL;DR: Apple makes being an uncle a lot more awesome. Plus, FaceTime is the best. Also, if you have any app recommendations, paid or free, let me know please!

Switching from an iPhone 8 to iPhone XR - my thoughts!

    Posted: 05 Feb 2019 01:04 AM PST

Ok, i've actually been a loooong term android user from the early HTC Hero days, to Galaxy S - S II - S III - S IV, to Note III - S6 - P10 and lastly the Galaxy S8. I really loved that phone, a screen size comparable to my Note 3 in a small enough packade. It ended up stolen, so when deciding a new one i was curious to see how IOS was these days. I've used my friends iPhones obviously but i wanted to try for myself. The last Iphone i owned was the iPhone 4 when it came out for a few months, but during that time i really wasn't getting along with IOS, it felt way to restricted and behind android in a lot of ways at the time.

So, i ended up choosing between the iPhone 8 and the X. Ultimately my choice fell on the 8 since the X was way too expensive after my new s8 just got stolen.

And wow - IOS is nothing like i remembered. It's clean, fast, intuitive, easy to use and just an all around great os. I have a Macbook for school and i love how integrated everything is.

But the screen size, ugh. After using bigger screens for years the tiny 4,7 inch display felt cramped and small. I loved how easy it was to use with one hand though, but yea - the screen is a bit on the smaller side for my taste. So after almost a year with the 8, my local carrier had a really good student deal on the iPhone XR and the Iphone X (not XS). Basically with selling my 8 i would end up paying a minuscule amount. The X would have been the logical choice, but the XRs battery life is a huge selling point for me. I really missed my Note 3 days where i could go two or even three days without charging. Good times all around. I also really loved the red color, but felt the it was a little to big for my hands. In the end i chose the XR (but can still return it for the X for a few more days… we'll see how i end up doing. My thoughts:

You can start here if you don't care about my life story:

    ____________________________________________________________

Screen: Being a sub-1080p display my expectations was low. But lo and behold, the screen is great! It is color-accurate, sharp and really bright. Is it in the same league as my friends XS? No, it's not. Yes it's noticeable when comparing them side to side. I understand apples decision to not go with OLED, but still feels like a 1000$ phone should have 1080p at least.

Build quality: It's apple. The XR is beautiful, well built, feels premium and not cheap at all. No surprises here.

Performance: It performs flawlessly, as expected. While it "crushes" my 8 in benchmarks it's really not something that translates to real world use. It's fast folks.

Camera: The camera quality is a noticeable step up from my 8. Im not a big camera person, but the pictures are great! Love the portrait mode as well.

Lack of 3d-touch: This one was initially a bit of bummer for me. I didn't really use 3d touch except for one thing: On the older iPhones you could hard press on the left side to bring up the app-switcher. Me being left handed this was a bliss. After learning this was no longer possible on the X-models (why apple??) it was no longer a deal breaker. Otherwise i mainly used it for peeking on instagram feeds, but i found out it was still possible on the XR. Yet still, for a 1000$… yeah.

Lack of touch-id: I was really worried this was going to be a problem - but WOW! Face-ID is GREAT! It doesn't care if my finger is wet or dirty, it works with hats, glasses, caps, in strange angles and even in dark rooms. And it is FAST!

Size: It is a little bit bigger than i expected. I have trouble using it with one hand, but would prefer if it was a little bit smaller. Still, i like the screen size. I am getting used to it though.

Battery Life: Holy shit, it is AWESOME! I've been using it all morning and im still att 100%! It's crazy. Full-filled all my expectations and more.

All in all, a great phone, albeit a bit too big. I am getting used to it and think i will grow to like it.

TLDR: It's an 8 but better.

    EDIT: Spelling.

Can we all agree Apple screwed up with naming the iPhone X?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 12:47 PM PST

I swear I've heard more people call it "iPhone ecks" or "iPhone ecks-R" instead of iPhone 10. Is it just me?

And what about the iPhone 9?

    Radio Station Management

My biggest hope for the next iOS would be for Apple Music to provide the ability to edit your radio stations. I have these stations that were created for me, and stations that I have created which I would love to be able to edit. At the least, delete stations I no longer listen to.

Wish the TV app for iPhone would allow you to download episodes over mobile network instead of limiting you to wifi...

    Posted: 04 Feb 2019 04:22 PM PST

I have 50gb per month on my mobile plan and my mobiles internet is definitely faster than my home wifi.

I just wish Apple would give the option to allow larger downloads without wifi.
