Opinion: Apple Pay Deals Should Be Promoted More

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 09:21 AM PST

At the moment, I only receive Apple Pay deals via email. I wish Apple had a dedicated page for Apple Pay deals.

TIL that AirPort Extreme has a built-in WiFi network scanner

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 01:47 PM PST

You can activate this feature by going to iOS' Settings —> Airport Utility and selecting "WiFi Scanner". Then go back to the Airport Utility and a WiFi Scan button appears in the upper right part of the screen.

[TIL] Netflix blocks screenshots on the app

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 10:13 PM PST

By that I mean taking a screenshot while watching a video on Netflix shows up black. Interesting how they do that and I wonder if Snapchat can do that for snaps as an option?

There should be a max volume feature in parental controls

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 10:15 AM PST

My kid loves to watch Fireman Sam (Norman is literally the worst). Anyway, he'll occasionally turn the volume up way too high and we'll get into a back and forth in turning the volume up and down. I'd love the ability to set a maximum level for the volume so he can't put it so high it makes my ears bleed.

Edit - This makes it sounds like I just let him have it at a high volume. I don't. If he turns it up again we just take it away. My point of having a max volume setting is to avoid the issue entirely.

Some perspective from a recent Apple adopter

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:39 AM PST

So after growing up in the Microsoft ecosystem, owning about 15 systems since an 80086 IBM clone with Hercules graphics, up to a i7 4700 laptop, i finally decided to jump ship. Reason for me was my experience with iOS and how it prevents me from screwing up my device (i have this crazy urge to dump Linux on every device i own, just for fun). At work it was time to replace both my laptop and my phone so i went all the way:

    • iPhone XS
    • MacBook Pro with touch bar

Of course i was already familiar with iOS so no surprises there, but it was MacOS that really opened my eyes. For the first time in my life i didn't feel like my OS was dragging along 325 processes that i don't use. It feels so nimble, light and well thought out. Combining that with a touchpad that actually works (normally these things just give me RSI but i actually prefer it over my Magic Mouse 2), and a keyboard that feels tremendous, i am literally smiling every single time i take it out of my BookBook sleeve, thinking how i should've switched 15 years ago. I did not expect that i could have these feelings for tech anymore, but holy crap!

Since then i've bought myself a pair of AirPods and an Apple Watch, completely diving into the apple ecosystem, and boy am i loving it! I've been binge watching Steve Jobs interviews and keynotes, and learning a lot about how MacOS came to be.

Now i know there are a lot of people now complaining about Apple, their lack of innovation and recently made choices, but i wanted to share this with you all, as i think some of you might have "forgotten" how it is without Apple products, and are a little bit spoiled. Try and switch back to a random consumer-grade Windows laptop for a week and i'll guarantee you'll find renewed respect for the quality of Apple products.

Why does Apple Music separate one album into various albums when there are more than one artist in the same album?

Our $29 iPhone battery replacement lasted 10 months.. yours?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 07:05 AM PST

My wife and I both had our batteries replaced as part of Apple's $29 battery replacement offer last year, and it really did breathe new life into both our phones. Lately, my wife has told me that her battery isn't lasting that long like it normally does. Generally, she is a fairly basic user, and she gets my old phone when we upgrade, since she really doesn't use a ton of apps (literally, phone, text, email, web, and an app from her employer). I have a 7 for comparison. Her battery normally lasts a day and a half. I check out the battery app, her battery health in the app is showing peak performance and 93% use over since we had the battery replaced in April, not bad at all. I can see though that the graph has a quick drop-off though, something is definitely off.

We take her 6S into the store while we are killing time in town before seeing my family since it's about a 45 min drive to the nearest one. Got a walk-in appointment with only a 5-10 minute wait which is pretty damn impressive considering the store is always packed. Apple store tech runs the diagnostics, and I visually confirm with the tech that the battery has a physical issue with it. I'm aware that the warranty is only 90 days, but it is still frustrating nonetheless. Cost is now $49 to replace.

What has your experience been with the replacement you got last year? Has your battery health been alright, or have you gotten your replacement battery replaced already?

Tip: Starting a free trial for a subscription you're uncertain about? Sign up and then immediately go cancel it

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 11:24 AM PST

Go to the app store and under manage subscriptions just go and cancel it. You still get to access for the duration of the trial, and you don't have to worry about going to cancel it before the end of the trial if you decide it's not worth buying

What could Apple possibly add to the iPhone after a third camera this year?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 06:29 AM PST

I can't possibly think of anything new and exiting that they can introduce outside of the most obvious like improved display panels (maybe 120hz in the future), SoC, speakers, camera, FaceID and maybe fast charger in the packaging.

Will the iPhone see small incremental updates for the foreseeable future? ...or perhaps the current and future innovation from Apple will be found in the Watch, iPad and AirPods?

My local Apple Store has killed the set up table.

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 04:38 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I've noticed that two of my local apple stores don't have the set up tables anymore. They now use those tables for the Today at Apple activities.

I was trying to help my dad set everything up but they said they don't have those set up tables anymore. You are still welcomed to sit down and set it up but they are not helping you like they used to.

Have you guys noticed the same?

    Lefty / Righty CarPlay options

    Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:40 AM PST

    Hi all 👋

I have a Kia Optima and my last used apps are listed on the left hand side of the CarPlay screen, I just assumed this was the case. Today I got a lift with a friend, he has a Skoda and his icons were down the right hand side. Now to prefix this I'm in the UK and both cars are righthand drive.

I've had a search through the settings and can't find a way of changing this.

Is there a way of changing this???

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Potentially silly Apple Music question...

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 08:41 AM PST

When I use Siri and say "Play some Glass Animals", she will generate a playlist that's similar to one of apple musics curated "essentials" playlists.

How can I do this via apple music without asking Siri?

    Scratched MacBook screen coating?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 06:24 PM PST

    Hi all!

I've had my 2015 13" MacBook Pro for a few years now.

Starting from a year or so ago I noticed that the coating on my screen was slowly disappearing/scratching.

I almost never touch the screen with my hands and always use it indoor.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Or if there's a way for me to fix this.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
