(DISCUSSION) The Galaxy S10 will wireless charge an Iphone XS faster than the included iPhones included charger.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 10:27 PM PST

S10 has 9 Watts 1 amp wireless charger. The charger in the box with iPhones is 5 Watts 1 amp.

Thought this was super interesting and warranted a discussion about the hardware that Apple includes in the box.

My New Old Mac - Moving From 2017 to 2015 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 05:38 PM PST

    Just a silly story.

In 2015, I was finally making decent money as a software engineer, and I treated myself to a 15" Retina MacBook Pro. It was my favorite computer I had ever had.

Back then I was really reluctant to try things like "Find My Mac" because I thought I would be spied on. In 2017 My computer was stolen from me.

I bought a 2017 13" TouchBar Macbook Pro to replace it, but I never loved it the way I loved the older machine. It was thinner, lighter, space grey was kind of cool looking, etcetera, but I hated the keyboard and ended up using it with an external one most of the time.

I finally found another 2015 15", in great condition - in fact, it's still eligible for AppleCare but I'm not sure if I should buy it, since the price has been jacked up to $370 - and I bought it.

I know the 2018 one is much faster, but I'm happy to go back to the old keyboard.

    Here's a picture of the two, side-by-side:

Is the XS worth the $300 over the X?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 10:17 PM PST

Currently rocking a 6S through Cricket, looking to upgrade before I ship off to Navy boot camp here in a couple of months. I saw the iPhone X for $699 and was very intrigued by all the features it held over my 6S. Then I saw the iPhone XS and wondered if I should just buy it, or if it's just not worth the extra $300. My main focus is Camera quality and battery life. Any helpful insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Update: After thorough research I decided that the iPhone X was the best option for me. The XR, being an awesome phone, just wasn't quite what I was looking for in terms of an upgrade. & the XS just was out of my price range for the small amount of upgrades honestly. I believe the X fits my needs better and I hope I'll be happy upgrading from the 6S. Thank you everyone for your helpful insight.

SongShift 4.0 Release - Free music transferring app [Self-Promotion Saturday] [50 Pro Upgrade Promo Codes Inside]

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 02:29 PM PST

    Hi Everyone!

This week Ben (/u/benr783 ) and I released an update to our app SongShift with big improvements based on our user feedback and overall quality of life improvements.

For the unaware, SongShift is a free app to transfer music between popular music services.

    What's New?

    - No Limits

We removed all the limits which previously restricted free users to a certain amount of Shifts. We want everyone to be able to transfer all their music for free. We're committed to improving our app and making it more accessible to everyone.

    - Improved Matching

We started with the most important part of the app, matching, and processing. This has been totally revamped to make sure the best matches are made. No longer will you get matches to compilation albums like the Now series.

    - Match Review

To further help with matching, we introduced a new Match Review feature so you're aware of the matches we chose and can fix any that aren't right before any changes are made to your music library.

    - Share Sheet Action

Sometimes you'll come upon links to playlists which aren't in your library. With our share sheet action, you can import these links into SongShift for easy transfer.

    - Streamlined UI

We improved our UI to be clearer and easier to jump right in into transferring your music.

    ~~

We'd love to hear your feedback on this update. There a many plans for future versions and we're committed to improving our app and making it the best it can be.

Homepod Users - Looking back now, was it worth the money?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 07:20 PM PST

I purchased a homepod about a month after they released. After getting over the steep price and the usual apple compatibility stuff, I've really enjoyed using it. However, I have seen some people online complaining about the product, its price and siri, etc. So to all fellow homepod owners, do you regret your purchase?

For improving Siri and future voice-recognition

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 09:30 PM PST

I wouldnt mind to let Siri record me when Im asking it something, Siri getting it wrong, and I can write the correct text that was intended so Siri gets data on its misstakes for future imporvements.

It could maybe have an op-in for it where you can agree to have Apple gather the data on such corrections and what sounded wrong or right.

Idk, its just something that bothers me.

As an example, asking Siri today:

    What is Appalachians

    Siri interprets it as, Appellations.

Outline Notes - free notes app that makes it easy to group and reorder thoughts

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 04:52 AM PST

I had a need for a simple writing app, I couldn't find anything that existed so I taught myself swift to build an iOS app. I year later, I've rebuilt it and refreshed the design https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/outline-notes-lists-ideas/id1342189178.

I'd love a round of feedback for this version.

    Summary:

    • Completely free, no ads, iCloud support for backup and cross device sync
    • It's another notes app BUT its specialty is grouping and re-ordering. When I write, I tend to just write whatever comes to my mind and then organize and edit later. I also tend to group and nest my thoughts.
    • I found copying and pasting cumbersome for moving things around, so I thought "why not drag & drop?". You can drag individual items or entire groups.
    • I found using dashes as bullets to signify nesting hard to parse, so I thought "why not swipe to indent/outdent".
    • For to-do lists, like my Outline Bugs list, I found it cumbersome to write something like "DONE", so I thought "why not swipe to mark as done". So now you can swipe to add a checkmark and see a visual difference.
    • Sharing works well in that it shares a text representation of your note but there was no easy way to import someone else's note, like my wife's to-do list for me, into my Outline, so I thought "why not export and import as CSV?" Now you an export your note, share it however iOS lets you share it, and the receiver can "Open in" Outline. It creates a new note with the same structure as the original.
    • Finally you can create, use, and share templates!

You can read more about the story and applications of this style of writing here: https://outlinenotes.com/#story

    Thank you!

Good non-unified Email Apps for both iOS & macOS

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 10:31 PM PST

I've tried a ton of the already existing Apps. Along with the default ones. The unified inbox seems to be all the rage these days. I don't like it. I like my inboxes separated. And none of the ones that I've used allow me to separate them aside from a few. But those few have terrible UI's, they're not user-friendly and they're difficult to navigate. Am I just SOL? Can someone suggest some good email apps please!

Searching for an old game: Gamma World RPG

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 10:07 PM PST

The first RPG I ever played is starting to turn into a Mandela Effect affair... I swear this really happened and it really was called Gamma World. It was the mid-to-late 1980s but the game might have been old by then. It played like a typical SSI/TSR computer game, but with all the quirky stuff from Gamma World baked in. I can't seem to find any reference to its existence. Am I going crazy?

Can we get iCloud notes in the notification centre on Mac?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2019 12:52 AM PST

We can have the Calculator which is pretty cool, just a quick swipe from the right and you can access it, but how can we get a Notes widget in there too?
